£10k Bonus Race. Strong wind on the day as a Crosswind from the Left in the back stright, Crosswind from the right in the home straight and a Tailwind around the bend. Faster time for this early in the season but helped by conditions. OR75 rated 3yo Quality Art a clear winner in a later handicap in 59.17s carrying 6lbs less. A race that gets reduced to Something's-Got-to-Win Algebra before the event in analysis. A low level of form set and a bar that many can reach in Profile. But, negatives about all of them in profile so you have to restart the calculation to find the best of the negatives. Copper Falls the classic example. Has show some form but OR60s level so beatable and no scope to develop. Also has the big negative of the trainer who has only managed a single 2yo win from 100s of goes. The sort of promise CF has shown not unusual but never gets converted. Ran ok again here but probably set a too strong a pace. Upped the pace around halfway on the bend and had some of the others needing to be driven to react. But, she hasn't seen the full 5f out in previous races and that effort saw her fade late here. But, a useful start to be able to knock out the forecast fav as a possible winner. The next obvious one in Hannon's Minal although the stable's 2yos not in full force yet. Also, the FTOs seem to have reverted to type in that the really useful ones can win FTO but the lesser ones wont. This one just ordinary on profile and OR60s and wide drawn. Drifted in the Market initially as if the Hannon's knew she wasn't that good. But, Jockey Hughes here on a day when he had other meetings to choose from. That proved to be a negative anyway along witht he filly in review as an underpowered OR60s filly in line with the profile and not the sort Hannon will win with FTO except in a very soft race. Like the old joke you might wonder what would happen if you swapped jockeys Hughes and Ajtebi's medication. Give Ajtebi the Benzedrine and the laid-back Hughes the Valium. Hughes seemed in a bad mood for some reason here and gave a performance befitting of Ajtebi on the Benzedrine. Perhaps he has had his tax return bounced back or still smarting over Memory making him look like a plonker the previous day. Whatever, it was a no nonsense ride on Minal which meant driving her along hard from early on and then forcing her into a 3 wide effort wide around the bend. Which is suicide and she folded predictably early after geting a bump into the straight. What was all that about, Hughsie? Arbeejay too cheap and from a trainer with no 2yo record. Compton Monarch the first 2yo runner for an imported Swedish trainer with no record here. This one the apparent second string to the NR and so a No. OTG the first runner of the year for Swinburn and some front-loading but debut wins this early very rare. Need this to be very soft to win. Marygold WD here on intended debut and then given a hold up ride to teach her to settle at Windsor. That race not strong form but she was supported a bit FTO. But, John Akehurst another negative trainer so a pass. Which leaves two and they fought out the finish. Red Socks not a positive in review at Nottingham and a poor run after a slow start and eased after a stumble when he might have been responding. Back at the course where he was sold as a breeze-up in March and ran better. Able to track the pace in 2R on the rail and produce an effort. A question over whether he was misjudged at NOTT or tags this as moderate form? And finally to Boomerang Bob who you could find as the least unattractive propostion before the race with a lot of thought. The clever bit is managing to get that far through the thinking a bit before the race started rather than shouting "Oh no, Sanders is here to ride it" as the stalls opened. Sanders had ridden John Hills previous 2yo winner this season and his presence seems a positive. He gave the Bath winner a calm ride and similar here. Happy to sit quietly on the rail in 3R and allow the leaders to blow themselves out. Took a bit of time to find a run in the straight with the leader weaving about as she faded but always going to pick up best. Look for other positives amongst the mountain of negatives overall and he is the biggest, in good condition for the day, drawn next to the rail and his work picture from home shows him moving well and pointing his toe well and reaching (which he showed here). John Hills normally a trainer to avoid but enough positive to support BBob in this set-up if you could think quickly enough. Probably the only OR70+ type in the field and a solid nursery type. |
