£10k Bonus race. GF going with watering but no details given other than 5mm to be put on the straight on the morning of the meeting. Stalls on the Stands' side. Going stick 7.7 on the previous day with a sunny and windy period in between plus watering = what is it before racing?? Going Stick reading as 6.3 on Apr 8th with GGS going and 8.0 on April 20th with GFF. Stiff breeze as a Tailwind. See notes to Race 31 which detail how fast that time was in comparison to the general juvenile times since 2002. This time slower by 0.05 seconds and Stonefield Flyer beaten -0.25L in Race 31 so ran a slightly faster time here in winning by 6L looking comfortable. Perhaps set a better pace here and ran closer to the rail having led in race 31 but in Lanes 1-2. Going Stick suggests slightly slower going today than for R31 but the Tailwind a little stronger. Stonefield Flyer carrying 3lbs more here. Taking effort by SFlyer setting a stiff pace next to the rail, being 2.5L clear through halfway and them powering away in the last 2F. Just a bit of caution given that he ran along the Stands' rail while the others raced lane 1 or wider and then hung away from rail. In 2010 several examples on firmer going of there being a bit of Magic Carpet next to the rail theat could make any horse look 10-20lbs better than they were. Horses racing off the rail to centre track under pressure earlier and fading before they should. This race had elements of that and any caused by Bias or all down to quality of SFlyer? Four other races on the Straight track with mixed results. Field for the 7f race at 15:45 ALL raced away from the rail so a fair race between them. The 8f race race at 16:15 did look like a rail Bias race. 8 runners with four in a line on the rail just after halfway with jockeys doing nothing. 4 runners off the rail already being niggled along. First three home (9/2, 11/4 & 12/1) made up of the first three on the rail through halfway (with the seond in line getting past the leader). 6f race at 16:45 looked entirely like a Rail Bias race. Barkston Ash (10/1) the only horse to run the rail throughout with field wide spread out across the course and went further and further away. 3rd horse ran the rail until hanging and letting the winner through. Left with view that Pitkin ran very well to be second having run widest off the rail for most of the race. 7f race at 15:15 split 8 runners to far rail and this group finished miles clesr of the stands' rail runners. First two home on Stands' side made up of 2 of three that race closest to the rail. Choisan a solid physocal type but unable to improve from debut and not able to go pace of winner. Inclined to the view that this was because of racing away from the rail compared tot he winners. Remains a horse of solid potential. Fahey on a similar schedule to 2010 and in the very Late April through to York Dante meeting period then he debuted only three horses and all OR90+ types. That included Premier Clarets running 2nd in this race. Moonville stood up well in the Market until a late drift to suggest a better one given the quality of opposition. But, just an average physical type and not an obvious better one. Just an ok run and, again, not looking better class but also racing off the rail. Almond Branches hugely fit for debut and supported on all three runs. Has run similar races each time and does not see out the full 5f. Trainer gets this type which either do not fulfil promise or take many runs to win. |
