SUMMARY
GF going with watering as 4-5mm on each of the previous 4 days. Going Stick 8.1 reading. Rails mainly on the inner configuration and no false rail (cutaway) at the top of the straight = full race distance. Stiff breeze as a part headwind for first 2f, Crosswind for 1f+ and then a Tailwind for the last 2f or so down the straight.

Race sponsored by Tom Dascombe's Manor House Stables. He entered five with Electric Qatar, Lexi's Prince, Marford Missile, Pyman's Theory & Van Go Go. David Evans entered 4 for a race he targets = Choice Of Remark, Choisirez, Jawking & Redair. Hannon rarely has runners and a moderate record with those he has. Entered 3 with Lord Ofthe Shadows, Magic City & North Star Boy. Mostly usual reps otherwise but worth noting both 1st & 2nd (Ponty Acclaim & Beau Mistral) from Ripon fillies' auction entered (well beaten 3rd has already won well since and that race prob 5-10lbs under-rated). Also odd entries for Fahey (Lily's Angel), David Nicholls (JJ Leary and suggests his poor debut short of what he can do? = declared for Doncaster 4 days before) & Mark Johnston (Vocational) who has been entered for lots of races since early season.

Time for race seems to be good compared to the 5f handicap which was race 4. OR89 rated 5yo won that in 59.73s carrying 5lbs less. But hard to believe this performance is a good as that comparison makes it. Winner did not run the race efficiently and most of field seem more precocious 2yos. The tightness of the bends makes racing away from the rail a real negative and the first 4 here were made up of the three that raced on the rail plus Redair who raced in lane 1. Majority of field, jockeys, never thinking about whether there there was a way to fix the problem of racing away from the rail and just blundering on. Plus marks for jockeys Crowley (for dropping out of theforing line early and finding a way to get to 2R on the rail) and Hanagan (for sticking to the rail, and making his challenge inside, after a slow start left him last). Look at the Halfway positions to final and the horses that ran in the Front line on the rail and 1 wide (CofR & Red) were able to control the race and run together for most of the race and finish together. The pressure put on them in having to work a bit to avoid horses cutting across them early mean that thsy did not finish the race off fully after a solid effort at 2f out. CofR rolled off the rail in the last 1F which left a gap for the 2R to pounce on the stalling front-rank. Which is where the first two made their efforts and they had been 2L and 4L behind the leading line after halfway but, crucially, taking the shortest route on the rail.

That pair able to find room on the rail because of some cementhead activity elsewhere. After 0.5f there was a Lo5 from the rail out of CofR-Red-Jawk-VGG-Mous with a Lo4 persisting to beyond halfway and those racing 2+ off the rail committing suicide. Mousie held back into 2R but then race 3 wide there so the same problem. This left the places in 2R open for Crowley on MM to find along with slower starting BM. Then LA able to get to 3R on rail easily because it was empty and then wait there for the leading line to break up, by stages, in the last 2f.

Lily's Angel a rare runner in the race for Fahey. Has looked good in both her previous wins in stalking the leader then producing a strong burst to get to the lead and winning duels to the lines with colts. In her last race she beat Stonefield Flyer who looked very good in winning by 6L yesterday and Marford Missile (who ran poorly never travelling that day and much better here). Which meant a draw in Stall 2 looked a good place for her to get the rail position behind CofR in 2R, stalk the leaders then bounce through to win. The race turned out something like that but with issues. In both previous races she has needed to be niggled along at the start to get going. Here she looked a tad unhelpful when presented to the stalls and unseated Hanagan twisting away. No surprise with that attitude to see her miss the break then need ecouraging along again. Also flashing her tail at the finish of the race in response to the whip. So, need to check her attitude NTO. But, again produced a strong burst to get to the lead and going away at the finish. Not a strong performance against an ordinary group but can clearly rate higher and carries a strong weapon into her races with the Stalk & Pounce style.

Hard to explain why Marford Missile was 40/1 and second string for Dascombe. His first win is working out well enough and the problem is presumably the way he appeared to fold STO and the SP owing a fair bit to Second String response. Got a good trip through the race and a solid effort to get past the leaders. Presume ran close to what he can do and check whether he can perform to the increased rating NTO.

Redair ran a little better than she showed having had to run Lane 1 throughout. Able to produce a similar effort to CofR running inside her and would probably have beaten him more comfortably with the positions reversed. Reliable type and ran a little below her best rating but lacks scope although should stay 6f.

CofR had the best run through the race in terms of track position although a problem in having to work to earn that. Produced a simialr effort to his previous 2 runs and close to his current best. Has been beaten by solid types in each of his last 3 runs and presume some sort of lower OR70s in the long view and the trainer will find something he can win.

HSCool a poor start and got behind and apprentice race him away from the rail and then switched to centre track towards 2f out to make his effort. Which set him an impossible task. Produced a solid effort in the last 1.5f and still responding and going forward at the line. perhaps better on a straight track but can rate higher than he showed here. Trainer has not won race since 2002 with OR100 rater The Lord and places at best since. HSC similar to the placers.

VGG first string on jockeys and ran better than she showed here. Race 3 wide throughout and produced an ok effort 2f out but then an early fade as would be expected.

BMistral an interesting filly who probably still has more to show. She had a slow start from a wide draw here and then ran too freely before halfway running into the back of the horses in front. Seems to lack a real 5f effort 2f out and then fading with the problems. But, a bit more size and strength than some in the field and appeals more as a 6f+ type. Worth tracking because can develop further.

The other pair (Jawking & Mousie) small ones with suspect form and both pressed the pace running wide so fading very early. Jawking too slow to maintain his place in front rack. Mousie looked quite impressive LTO at a lower level and this seemed to conform thatthere was something odd going on at Yarmouth (rail bias?) to create that impression. Presumably will end up in lower class nurseries and sellers but should be competitive there in later season.
