SUMMARY
£10k Bonus Race.

4mm of water applied after previous day's racing through to midnight. Going Stick at 8.2 compared to 8.1 on previous day. Rails out 3 yards from the 4F pole to the 1.5f pole leaving a drop-in at that point. This adds 15 yards (0.068F) to the race distance compared to the Lily Agnes. Stiff breeze as a part headwind for first 2f, Crosswind for 1f+ and then a Tailwind for the last 2f or so down the straight.

Not a strong performance and treat the ratings with a little caution as they may be 5 points over-rated. The 4-5th seem high for the inefficient ways they ran the race. Lord Ali McJones seemed to run his race efficiently getting out from an inside draw and able to run the rail in the front line throughout. Made an effort inside the last 2f which is presumably what he can do and then not seeing the last 0.5f of the extended 5f out that well. He is a smaller, ready sprinter and a solid type but below Open Maiden winner level. The Market has said that in comparison to the punted Dascombe 2yos in his two runs. But he sets a good guideline to judge the others by. One point to note is that, as on debut, he had Stans Deelyte making an effort from a wide draw to go past him as he sat on the inside and run 1 wide of him. Perhaps putting a bit of pressure on him he would have been better to avoid. SD a small filly and a seller type at best. But, she has shown in both races that she has some zip and ability. To be able to get to the lead here from draw 7 is something most of the field couldn't do because of inexperience or lack of pace. But, she only stays a little other 3f with the pressing Run Style so cannot win anything at present. If she does then she could win a seller, say by getting loose in the lead at Catterick.

Gabrial a better class debut for Fahey in a period which he produced some of his best in 2010. A solidly built son of FSS Dark Angel and a fizzy and sweaty type. Ran the race inefficiently getting a slow start and having to run off the rail. But jockey Hanagan again (as with Lily's Angel) switched inside in the last 2f and made his challenge closer to the rail in the straight. A strong, and willing, finish. Trainer quietly complimentary about the horse afterwards and clearly thought he was one to take seriously in higher grade. Said he was a lively type at home (which showed here) so wanted to mae sure he did not boil over here.

Sea Odyssey another son of Dark Angel and a similar type to the winner in physical terms if not a little heavier. But a sleepy attitude and not looking fir enough after a break. A typical runner in the race for Barry Hills who will normally run the best of his few earlier debuts who are still maidens in this race. Often the Brocklesby placer or one that ran at the Newmarket Craven meeting. Dark Angel was one of those having been sleepy and a late running 2nd at Newmarket prior to winning this equivalent race in 2007. But, the trainer now has a lop-sided record in the race. He won it three times in a row 2005-7 with River Kintyre (Brocklesby placer, OR80s handicapper), Captain Marvelous (NMKT, developed to German Group win) & Dark Angel (NMKT, Group winner). Sea Odyssey's place means his last four runners have made the first 4 without ever threatening to win and being disappointing to various degrees at short SPs. Senatorial was 4th in 2008 (NMKT, OR80), Swilly Ferry 3rd in 2009 (Brocklesby, developed late season to OR90+ & Diamond Geezah 4th last year (Brocklesby, developed to maiden win and OR90). None of those got into the race and produced disappointing efforts in the straight. The trainer's runner in the first race here showed a similar lack of effort having been raced wide throughout by Michael Hills. Similar here with another poor ride in 2 wide throughout and then making for centre track in the straight (while Hanagan was ducking inside from behind him. An unexciting effort in the straight as his lack of fitness and wide run would have said was likely. But, on previous types he ought to be OR80+ and develop well in later season and this almost another prep run off a break.

Probably not much behind the first and third and CK improving his rating after missing the break and running wide feels suspect. Either he has improved more than he showed here or the rating is a bit overdone. Nearly A Gift another niggle for the form as a second string, apparently, to the NR Hello Stranger and another cheap one for Tim Easterby. On the up side the trainer does seem to have found a bit of 'buying form' after a lone period of moderate performance. Perhaps NAG has developed well from a yearling and seemed to do more than being a volunteer 5th in sustaining her effort down the straight to be with the 5 clear at the finish.

Gin Twist looks smallish and expensive for the money she cost unless part of it was pedigree based (not obvious). More interest in Peter's Pursuit who does not look a 5f horse and the type to develop over further so an interesting Nursery type if he does not develop before they start in early June.
