£10k Bonus Race. GF in morning with Going Stick 8.6 reading. 8-10mm of watering applied over the previous 7 days. Chance of rain at start of the meeting. Stiff SE breeze on day. James Millman on the stable's website before Meloneras ran FTO = "Meloneras makes her debut and she works nicely at home but as with most of ours she will need the experience. Combined with the fact she is the only filly in the field will make life hard but Newbury’s a lovely track for horses to start their careers and will put her spot on for the future." Hard to believe the 5f course at FFOS is really 1,100 yards given the times they run. Presume the wind was a tailwind and EQL would have run below 57s if he had run straight. Only faster time by 2yos since the course opened when Marlinka (Conditions quality) ran 57.01s in 2010 carrying 5lbs less than this winner. Mark Johnston has introduced some strong debuts in the last week after a break from later April. He said in interview at Chester on the day that he felt his horses had neot been in top condition in April. He said the coats had been very good condition in Jan-Mar then seemed to dip despite the dry and warmish weather. Felt the cold winds associated with the dry April perhaps some reason. He said the horses were looking better now & had two winners on the day at Chester. Es Que Love clearly expected to be a good debut and for an owner (formerly the Buhaleeba family). Travelled well setting a strong pace and went clear of the two with him without being asked for an effort. Would have been a good winner looking one who could go to higher level but for the issues. When the jockey asked him to make his final effort 1.5f out he veered LH to centre track and the jockey struggled to stay on. Still in the lead at this point. Jockey got settled and horse still going forward. Presumably still feeling like he was hanging so the jockey used the whip around the 1f mark and the horse veered LH again. Ending up on the far rail and at one point going at a rate which looked like he might go straight through them. Jockey had had enough then and started pulling him up. Quite impressive for 3f+ Mr Majeika sent to Scotland on Debut to try to win a £10k bonus and rain there meant he did not get the faster going the trainer wanted. Got it here but he would probably not have won without Jockey Dobbs remaining calm. In the centre of the Lo3 through halfway but unable to match the leader & Meloneras kick at 2f out and then hung a little left. Dobbs let him get balanced and then kept him balanced as he responded. Produced a strong finish to lead later on and run a good time. Presume OR80+ and Novice level winner. Trainer Millman has specialised in STO blossoming wins in recent seasons at long SPs. Nearly all of his season winners make 5f debuts in the early batch and make no show. Meloneras came very close to producing another here. Able to attend the pace second best and a strong effort a 2f and left in the lead. Smaller type but speedy and OR74+ Evans trio lesser types and might be a seller winner in them. Bluebells Are Blue given a peculiar ride. Lo3 developed from horses drawn near the rail and BAB wider out with the Evans newcomers. They hung left early and not able to keep up. Which meant the jockey had the choice of leaving them and trying to get into the gap behind the Lo3 or stay where he was. He appeared to do nothing and just let the horse drift through the race. BAB not able, or unwilling, to produce any worthwhile response later on. Unconvincing as an open Maiden type on debut but should be better than he showed here. Check whether there was some reason for the jockey's inactivity. |
