£10k Bonus Race. Stalls centre and field raced centre track. Mick Channon on his website = "Bollocks!, screamed MRC from the balcony of Ascot's Box 511 as Insignia Racing's REPRESENT endured a nightmare passage in the fillies maiden on debut last night. It's probably fair to say that Martin Harley would make different decisions with hindsight as the daughter of Exceed and Excel was the last off the bridle but had nowhere to go. She was brought around horses over to the far side, when a little more patience would might have seen her prevail, but despite all of this, the manner in which she failed was pleasing enough. "I was pissed off at the time" reflected MRC this morning, "but these things can happen and I'm certainly not getting on Martin's case about it. It was a thrilling run and a cracking contest with us finishing third, beaten only a head and a short head. I seem to be able to get some real good ones beaten first time up. Nahoodh suffered a similar fate in the same race four years ago. She went on to win the Lowther and eventually the Falmouth so I suppose it's about winning the war and not the battle." Such a comment is bound to encourage people to go a little bit overboard and this was pointed out to the Boss. As a result, he kept his summing up to a minimum. "I think REPRESENT is good."' Not a strong pace but enough, combined with a 2f+ effort late one to separate the front 4 from the others at the line and a 4-way photo finish. Whole field within 4L of the lead at halfway and pace wound up after that. The shape of the finish would suggest that all of the first 4 are Open Maiden winner class and the Gap behind them perhaps the Changeover Point and the front of the Garbage Gap not far behind it. Guru Girl a strong debut by 'Burke' standards at Newmarket and confirmed that promise with another competent effort here. Probably close to her best and not that far above OR75 by season end. Other fillies with more potential. Represent the obvious one to improve a lot and should have won here. A taller, slightly narrow, and rangy moving type of the sire who seems to get precocious types who are mature in early season and not develop that much. Travelling best in behind the leading line towards 2f out with the apprentice able to do his 'Hughes' impression and waiting to make his effort. But the gap he was aiming for through the front line disappeared at the wrong moment and he had to wait to switch right wide, Then produced a strong finish but too late. To make the point towards 2f out Toffee Tart was behind her being scrubbed along. That filly then went past her as Represent struggled to find a gap and she had to switch outside TTart and make her effort outside of her. Beaten a Head at the line by that filly having given her 3-4L start by having to wait for her to go by and then switch around her. John Hills has a moderate record with 2yos but clearly has a solid bunch to run early in 2011. In the period 2007-10 he managed just 2 individual winners (of 2 or 3 races) in each year from between 15-21 runners. He tends to front-load the competitive ones and Toffee Tart his fifth runner of the season. FTO wins common given the small number of wins overall and he had already had one this season. TTart came close to giving him his 3rd winner of the year from just 5 horses. Retained for just £1,200 at the (hide them for OBs & auction races) Brightwell Ascot sales but a solid size and strong enough build. Green through the race but Sanders again a positive on a Hills 2yos. Gave the two winners this year for the trainer quiet hold up rides and choosing the right time to make the effort. Different here with the filly green through halfway and having to be scrubbed along. But responded well before 2f out and able to make one, uninterrupted, run and make some of the ground back before the leaders kicked. Kept the effort going to the line. Believable as an OR75+ Open Maiden winner rather than holding the form down. Keep an eye out for Sanders wanting to be there for her STO. Trainer will presumably run out of 5-6f usable ones soon rather than expecting the good start to continue at the 3 good ones from 5 pace. David Simcock has changed his approach with 2yos since he started. He used to get very fit, sweaty, ready-on-debut types and those with ability showed it FTO. That has settled back and the debuts wins are less common. He had three in 2010 but that relied on Group 1 winners Dream Ahead who couldn't avoid winning FTO and two late season debuts wins over 10f (which noone other than Mark Johnston does). My Lucky Liz an earlier than usual runners for him these days and a rare 5f debut. Taller, well grown type and green at times through the race. Another by Exceed And Excel, like Represent, and at least as much physical potential. But attended the pace comfortably and then took a bit of time to understand what to do inside the last 2f. But a strong response in the last 1f and hampered a little by the winner hanging. Not looking wound for the day and 6f ok. Another believable solid type to think the 4 fillies that pulled clear are ok and MLL perhaps the second best of them in the mid-term. Starfly drifting and the Market does seem a good clue to what sort of debuts to expect from Noseda. A good one will be 3/1 or under and can get very short. Just a medium size compared to the more substantial fillies in the first 4. Ran a bit better than the final result being able to make an effort to sit in the gap behind the front 4 until fading out of it in the last 0.5f. You would want the Market to be giving strong positive signals to think about supporting her STO. Karuga more interesting than her final position. Ran a little freely on debut and Hughes clearly saw his main job here as teaching her to settle. Which meant she got well back in a race with a usable pace where making ground in the last 1.5f not easy. Didn't react like a 5f filly at 2f but still responding into the final 1f and Hughes eased her off early. Expect her to be better than she showed here and the Hannons will target the right level 3TO for a win. |
