£10k Bonus Race. Stiff breeze as a headwind. Going Stick 7.7 as it was for the April 23rd Meeting (Ortea's win in a similar time carrying 3lbs more). Much firmer at 9.5 for the April 6th meeting. Photo - of the First 2 finishers in the last 1f. Photo - of some of the stragglers in the last 1f. A dreadful race in 2010 where the 9 fillies that ran in it produced one later win between them, in a Nursery off OR60. The winner ended up competing poorly off OR69 and most of the field got beaten in sellers or claimers. And they ran the fastest time for the distance here by 2yos since the start on 2009. Plenty of 'Lesson' to think about in that. Add that background to a moderate looking bunch here on Profile, plus the Reviewer having a Migraine, and the feedback about this group likely to be downside. First point to note that despite the extended distances back to the 3rd it was not a fast time. The gaps back seemed to be caused by two factors. Firstly those behind were not very good or very green. Secondly the first two belted down the stands' rail and the others raced off it and hung left away from it under pressure. The extra distance seemed to owe something to a race where the rail was an advantage and being away from it a swamp, relatively. Night Angel is a classic Millman improver these days who is clueless FTO but then wises up. Blinkers here and a no-nonsense ride grabbing the rail and putting the newcomers under pressure. NA in good condition but smaller & lightly made and an OR60s fillies in the full view. Not Open Maiden class but sets a solid standard to judge the others by. Kevin Ryan had not produced any better debut runners in mid to later May as he normally does other than Pea Shooter. No better filly either. Dozy less tall and neater made than a typical one by her sire. Market said she was expected to be a better one and owner Redvers there to collect the £10k bonus. Able to deal with NA reasonably comfortably despite some greennes but probably a low OR80s filly rather than a long term better type. Fairy Moss small and compact and OR60s in the full view but should peak STO and might get an OR in the OR70s. Very green and got adrift and got to a poor 3rd by crossing over to the advantaged rail behind the field. End up in clamers? No interest in J Cunnigham as anything other than a lower OR60s nursery type. More interest in Samasana as the most substantially built of these fillies and ought to be OR70+ on Review. Has two dreadful runs in the book but ran better here than the final rating. Still 3rd 1f out until a fade and racing away from the rail. Probably need 6f+ and should develop ok and might be a surprise winner given the form in the, 2D, book. What to make of Perfect Day?. Not Sold for 220k and out of an Irish Classic Winning mare so how does she end up running for a Partneship? Leased? Trainer Cole's FTO runners often shorter in the Market if competitive and it said she was ok. But in a funny mood from the prelims and all but refused to go to the boxes to be saddled (Picture). Similar in the race and running wide of the rail. Seemed to pack it in after halfway. Ok size but typically compact type of sire and a bit leggy to produce the height. Ought to be ok for OR70s but attitude needs to improve and checking STO. [Update = Paul Cole on his website on May 10th = "Perfect Day was bitterly disappointing on her debut. She was sent off favourite, which may have been a tad optimistic, but we had expected at least a finish in the places. She was too green and hopefully will show her true colours next time."] Trainer Stewart Williams not that interested in 2yo racing and 1-4 winners a year at a moderate Strike Rate. Bur, usually front-loads the competitive ones and Miss Noble his only runner so far this year. Ran too freely on debut and faded because of that. 20/1 here which suggested another development run before she got upset in the stalls and WD. But, in Review a usable little bull sprinter. A notch bigger than FMoss all round, for example, and the trainer should be able to win with her. Perhaps in a fillies' auction or in the right nursery after a couple of quiet runs. A shame she missed this because drawn widest she could have run down centre track and been beaten miles. |
