£10k Bonus race. Going GFG in AM with Going Stick 9.7 (Stands's Side), 9.3 (Centre), 9.2 (Far Side). But those reading at 8:30am. 5mm of water applied overnight but showers in morning and at least another 3mm. Stiff breeze as a slight headwind (mostly a crosswind) from the left. Field raced centre until drifting centre to stands' side in the last 2f. Hannon on NSB on his website the day after the race = "he looked good, but he will look even better when he steps up to six furlong" Similar race shape to the previous day's fillies maiden and NSB 0.18s faster carrying 3lbs more. Whole field within just over 2L of the lead at halfway but enough of a later race sprint to provide some separation at the finish. In that context good to see Liebesziel well beaten unless he had some excuse for racing more prominently than he had done previously. Unusual field lacking reps from a number of larger stables (Barry Hills, Noseda, Channon, etc) apart from the Hannon favourite. Instead what are presumably the better ones from middle ranking to small stables. NSB able to put a solid amount of ground into the others given the shape of the race. Can develop and rate higher and another plus for the horses Hannon starts at GDWD. Clive Cox very selective, usually, about the horses he debuts at ASCT and has had debut wins here in 2006 & 2009. The five 2yos he has started out at ASCT since 2002 include 4 that have rated OR85+ and three into the OR90. The odd one out was Apollo D'Negro who went through his 2yo career winless in 2010. But, that one has won his only two starts in 2011 off ORs in the 60s so perhaps has more development to show. The trainer also gets regular long priced places and odd wins FTO. Lethal Force's 2nd here at 33/1 adds to a 33/1 3rd this year from just three runners. The Market still has not wised up to how ready his 2yos can be. Which meant that LF as a cheap one still looked a serious type on profile. A taller type of his sire and did enough here in sustaining his effort to the line to be Open Maiden winner class but needs a check as to how much higher he can go. Bayleyf a medium and ready sprinter and lacking some scope. Seems to still be mentally immature and have some quirks. His own handler at the post and blanket for stalls. Travelled ok in the leading line then ran around a bit when asked to make his effort and fading late on. Ok for Open Maiden but trainer can struggle with getting maiden wins and no srprise to see him tried in Conditions+ as a maiden. Good promise from Dissent as a solid size and strongly built son of Dansili without looking like a 5f type. Travelled ok to the pace past 2f out and then not really able to stretch out and produce the kick of the leaders. Fading late on and ran better than the final result. First runner of season for trainer Butler at a typical time and another trainer struggling with lesser number in recent years. But a reliable trainer and should be able to develop this one well. His first runner in 2008 was in a weak edition of this race and that one finished 2nd of 4 on his way to a minor auction race win and has not won at 3-4yo but competed off OR85+ mostly. Another punt on a D'Arcy horse but Caledonian Spring not ready in condition and took time to get going in the final sprint through greeness. But, a solid size and closing on the leading three to the line and ok promise for OR75+ Charles The Great a typically meadium sized and neat one the trainer buys with ok athleticism. Lacking some of the strength and bulk of the bigger lads. Going ok after halfway but too green to keep balanced and go forward in the 2f out effort. OR70s but check STO whether up to OR75. Worth noting St Barths for the future for two reasons. Meehan trains at the Sangster owned Manton Stables and the runners he has for that family (or part owned) perform well above his average). Until the increased numbers and shorter SPs in 2010 backing all his Sangster runners was often profitable. Theay also tend to compete better than his average on debut and still be at the longer SPs the trainer has. A mixed record but around 50% of his debuts runners at ASCT have proved to be Listed+ Class. Which means that with some extra time to develop and paerhaps starting elsewhere St Barths might be an each-way prospect FTO. |
