SUMMARY
Good going produced by watering and recent rain. 15mm of watering on Thu-Fri then 14mm of rain Fri-Sat. Going Stick reading 7.6 having been 9.0 (GFG) on April 4th (Silverheels), 9.0 (GFG) on April 11th (Lord Ofthe Shadows) & only 8.4 on April 18th (Best Terms) but the going still officially GFG. Medium Breeze as mostly a crosswind from the left slight lean towards a tailwind after the intersection.

Course not at full width and Rail Out by 6yds at the 6f start and narrowing down to 2 yards out at the finish line. This means racing on a different strip on he rail but whould not change the race distance.

Hannon on his website the day before the race = "Glee is a Bahamian Bounty filly belonging to Julie Wood and Balm is an Oasis Dream filly who is owned by the Rockcliffe Stud, and both have been pleasing us at home"

Barry Hills website on the w/b 2nd May News = "Recent Beverley winner Ektibaas has an entry at Ascot on Friday, along with two very nice unraced fillies Angels Will Fall (by Acclamation) and Cockney Dancer (by Cockney Rebel) who is pictured below. If either of them took their chance they would acquit themselves well." Neither filly ran at Ascot and AWF runs here instead. Barry Hills on his website news for w/b May 9th = " In the five furlong maiden our representative is Angels Will Fall (by Acclamation). She has been going nicely at home and we are hopeful she can become our first two year old winner of the season."

Tom Dascombe on a small message service on the day of the race "Gin Twist needs to improve on her debut effort to be winning this although we don't know how good the others are..."

Odd shape to the race but it seemed to produce an understandable result despite the lack of pace. First 6 through halfway within about 3L of lead and other pair only 2-3L back because of being green rather than unable to hang onto the pace. Hughes on Glee able to nick the lead off Ida Inkley at 2f out and they had been leading as a pair. But, not the full effort at 2f out as is normal and instead just raising the pace a little that got the smaller fillies working. Hughes then able to delay his final effort until just before 1f out on the rail and able to put distance into the little fillies. But, the other big filly in the field - Angels Will Fall - found going at this pace inside 2f out too slow and climbing over the back of the log-jam next to the rail. Green overall and loose in the Parade ring but AWF knowing enough in the race and too big and too good anyway. With Hughes not stretching the field out Winston on AWF had to take some action towards 1f out and used his horse to bump Ida Inkley out of the way and she then bumped the two outside her which helped to break up the smaller fillies. Then took off to pick up Glee quickly and win going away with Hughes watching her go in clear second and easing his filly because he knew AWF was too good. In summary, the two bigger fillies who, with the exception of Gin Twist who is small and poor value £/kg for what she cost, cost more than the others put together dusted the small girls off. The bigger and stronger one of the larger girls won, pretty impressively, despite being green and not fully fit. [AWF has been working with Sajwah who runs at WWCK tomorrow so check how that filly goes FTO. Seems Barry Hills might intro some better ones this week at York & Newbury after this solid start to the week.

A relatively simple race to summarise with a wide spread of abilities on show. AWF looked a serious prospect and up to Group class. Glee a solid OR80 filly and a good Open Maiden prospect STO. Another positive for trainer Elaine Burke in preparing Rougini FTO but not an Open Maiden quality one. Balm smaller and OR60s at best and not Open Maiden quality. At least keep Sweet Ovation on the list for how she develops. Green and hampered here so should be able to do better. Ida Inkley small and limited and Gin Twist ran poorly off a short break but well below Open maiden class anyway. Mount Mcleoud the first runner for Jamie Osborne this year and another stable who has seen a big decline in numbers in recent years and now gets only odd 2yo winners (all three in 2010 with the 'Fifth' prefix and bought by the same person at the sales so perhaps some insight there). THis one a bit green early and then ran too freely and the jockey tried to bury her at the back. Faded notably. hard to judge but nothing different to see on size (by HRE though).

[UPDATE = Barry Hills website news w/b May 16th = "Angels Will Fall got the two year old team off the mark with a facile success at Windsor. She was quite timid when she first came in to be broken but Richard Spencer and Chris Glenister, who break all our yearlings, did a great job with her. They were very patient and built up her confidence slowly, and the result was there for all to see on Monday. She is now very professional and didn't shirk the issue when Robert Winston asked her to squeeze through a small gap to make her challenge. All being well you will see her at Royal Ascot next." ]
