SUMMARY
Good going with 2.4mm of rain the previous evening. Going Stick given at 7.3 but the Straight Course given as 7.0 on all three strips (Stands', Centre & Far Side). Medium Breeze as a Crosswind from the Left. Stalls on Stands' Side.

Field race Stands side and mostly off the rail. Earlier 6f Group Race suggested that Stands side better strip than Centre to Far Side but whole of this field racing narrow enough to be racing on the same Stands' Side strip. Stong pace with a Lo3 forming early with (rail side out) Alejandro, Cravat & Hamza. These three broken up 1.5f by Profile Star. He had got behind early then taken off in FT blinkers and tanked up to the Lo3 with the jockey unable to hold him. At Thirsk LTO he had hung left persistently and did so again as he reached the Lo3 and hung into Alejandro. That one then nudged Cravat to break that Lo3 up and PS pulled into a lead and dragged over towards the rail. Three 'groups' by halfway with the first 5 through with under 3L of the forcing PStar and Monnoyer another 1L back trying to hang onto this group (at WTON FTO he had struggled with the pace early and again ran like a fast 5f too quick for him and better 6f). A gap of 2-3L back from these 6 to Gatepost on his own (at around 7L off the leader) with Spencer starting to switch him from rails side of the Stands' Side strip towards the centre side to ensure he got a clear run. The other three another 2-3L back together.

In the earlier 6f Group race the Pace did not hold up and the first two home came from the rear of the race. Effectively a similar setup here but with only Gatepost in a position to deliver a last 1.5f challenge to the stallers and faders from the leading group of 6 through halfway as it folded in order. Nothing else in 'rear' behind that group competitive with too long priced outsiders and a green Noseda debut runner behind Gatepost. Interesting to see, from an experimental aspect, what Monnoyer would have achieved if he had been alongside Gatepost at halfway. He doesn't seem to have that one's kick later on but it would have been useful to see what progress he could have made against the leading 5 without being hassled to tried to hang onto the back of them.

Channon on the News section of his website after the race = "He's a lovely horse and was always an eyecatcher at home not least for the unsightly scar he carries on his off stifle. I saw him by chance when I was in Ireland last year after he had an altercation with a gatepost - hence the name. We have two Footstepsinthesand two year-olds and the lads christened him to tell them apart. It's not a structural problem, merely superficial and it certainly doesn't stop him. That's five wins from seven runners for Dr Koukash, so we've been very lucky for him and I think we'll head for Royal Ascot and the Coventry. Jamie thinks he'll be better over six furlongs and it certainly looks like that to me, so that's the logical step."

Good performance from Gatepost and one of the two previous winners to have shown something a bit different in their wins. Produced a real change of pace at FOLK and without seeming to have to be pressed and comfortable win. Beat solid types at the level rather than just running away from rabbits. Has a straightforward attitude and his relaxed style and the burst he can produce makes him a useful Stalk & Pounce Run Style. Which is the sort that makes Spencer look like he has things under control. On the plus side produced that strong burst here to get to the lead and still going forward at the line. The Coventry can often develop into Pace War which falls apart and hold up (and plain outpaced) horses can work through late to place. Spencer finished 3rd in 2009 to Canford Cliffs with a lesser horse than Gatepost with that sort of ride. On the niggles side Gatepost lacks the build to look like a real Higher Class one and seems to do a lot on efficiency (athleticism & range). He has looked good against other early 5f types but hasn't run into a better 6f one yet. In this race the pace applied meant the race set up just right for him to pick off the folding front rank on a day which suited hold-up runs. On balance a good prospect to place in the Coventry and might win a soft edition (like CD Europe did for Channon) but would come up a bit short against a real solid Group type (rather than a precocious 2yo one). This race run the day before the important 6f maiden at the course which produced the 2010 Coventry runner-up and 2 days before the Newbury maiden where Hannon has introduced the last two Coventry winners. Which means the image of Gatepost in this a good template to compare the front of those races to for something better.

Hamza hadn't really shown anything different on debut although that was on softer ground and a slow race. He did show he could survive the pace there and keep on off it. His runner-up in that race has proved useful too but was too green to test Hamza then. Better run that expected in this race and upped the opinion of him. Did best of those racing prominently although the least affect by the Profile Star barging in early race. Able to break those with him and react to Gatepost before stalling later on. Can rate higher with a more even run and less pressure and up to Listed class.

Ponty Acclaim the other, along with Gatepost, to show a bit of change-of-pace in her win. Against lesser types than Gastepost but still taking at the level. She also has a Stalk & Pounce Run Style which was suited to this. Ran better than her final rating having sat just over 2L off the lead at halfway on the outside. Produced her burst again here which got her from 2L back to challenging for the lead towards 1F out with Hamza until Gatepost went by. Faded back from a clear 3rd late on which hides some of the better work. Another to have a real weapon with her Run Style and reliable attitude. Listed level against fillies. A good question is whether she is better than Queens Revenge or not? QR in the Listed race at the meeting which might suggest she is better but PAcc still owned by the Easterbys so perhaps they split the fillies in deference to the other owner. If QR is better than PAcc then she might be an opponent for Miss Work Of Art.

Monnoyer didn't show anything really different on debut and a replay of his FTO effort at WTON showed that he seemed to lack the early pace to go with some minor talents. Greenness or a 6f type who finished the race off best? He was always going to be put under even more pace pressure in this race on a fast track and did not seem able to travel with the pace that comfortably. Unable to make much ground in the last 2f efforts and got unbalanced on at least two occasions which hindered him seeing the race out. Looked less taking in this group compared to WTON and makes you wonder what the strong Market support was saying? See whether he steps up to 6f next time.

A throw-out race for Alejandro who found all the trouble going and never got a clear run to show what he can do. Left with the post-race impression he can rate 50+ and do better than he showed here. Carved up by PStar early losing 2L, blocked and hampered from 2f in and bumped by Monnoyer (rolling around) when trying to get into a gap. Jockey did not persist late on.

A surprise to see Cravat at long SP if you quite liked his BVLY debut. Ok, the form was not upheld by Superplex getting beaten at BVLY the previous day but that was an odd race where the pace played a big part. Just medium size but solid build and in the right group here. Affected by the PStar bump early and by helping to force the pace but seemed to mostly run his race. Race 48 needs downrating.

Rio Grande WD on intended debut when he looked green and went loopy in the stalls. Hooded here while waiting for the others in the stalls but a slow break which got him last and well behind the pace. Not all bad given the way the race unfolded given that Gatepost was only 2L+ ahead of him at halfway. If he could have mounted a solid effort in the last 2f where might he get to picking up the faders? Not that far with him taking time to pick up and then making his best effort late around 1f out. Then fading late on. An educational run for a slow learner who must have more ability to show.

Mick Easterby has a mixed record with 2yos and the debuts can seem to be overly 'educational'. Some hints that he starts usable ones at York and his five FTOs there in 2010 included 3 of his 5 season winners and Iceblast who was here as a 3yo running well off OR83. Dicky Mint never put into the race (NPIR) and eased so early he almost got caught by his useless stablemate who was adrft early. But, on size grounds, has the scope to develop in the Easterby manner and win at some level and carries himself well enough. Track.

Profile Star raced much too freely in the blinkers and back to his early fade mode. Looked at least a notch out of his physical level here by comparison with the other ok ones. But, has some pace and well prepared and muscled here within his smaller frame. Difficult one to fix but not a lost cause to win again, perhaps in nurseries.
