GFG going produced by watering as 15mm on Mon, 12mm Tuesday night into Weds, 5mm on Weds evening. Going stick at 8.0 reading at 7:30am. It had been 8.7 for first day of Craven meeting (Jack Who's He), 9.1 for the second day (Princess Banu - See recent gallop where Miss Lahar cruises away from her) & 8.8 for Commissar's win. Stiff breeze as a Tailwind. Stalls far side and field race off the rail. Brian Meehan on his website 3 days before the race = "FINLEY CONNOLLY (Newmarket 6.15 p.m.) Nice colt from the first crop of dual 2,000 Guineas hero Cockney Rebel. Shaping well but will possibly need this initial outing. & HIDING IN THE OPEN (Newmarket 6.15 p.m.) Speedily-bred gelded son of Verglas who is closely-related to three sprint winners. Going well at home but may still be better for the run." Good grief, a moderate race on Profile and proved worse than that. Fell apart completely, like a clown's car, and bits were falling off before the race ever got going. Hannon's Cresta Star a NR with Sore Shins (what else). 10 horses got to the post but then a protracted stalls loading process with lots of problems. Field more than half loaded when Sister Guru reared over backwards and ended up trapped under the stalls. It took more than 5 minutes to get her out and those horses already loaded were taken out. The quiet ones were then reloaded and had to wait ages as the unruly ones took 5 more minutes to persuade in one-by-one. TB & MC probably stood quietly in the stalls together for 10 minutes overall in the two periods. PAJ & MZ both gave trouble loading and took lots of efforts to get in. Which meant 8 horses finally loaded when EOR was offered. He had been stood wearing his stalls blanket for much of the delay and was offered last so he is presumably trouble. Which meant at the first sign of him not going to go in easily the field was sent on it's way without him. 9 horses left but the small but reliable Misty Conquest had little to beat and able to dictate a slow pace with the strong tailwind. The time for the race was 1.76s slower than the preceding HnH Apprentice race won by an OR68 rated 4yo carrying 10lbs more than MC before MC's apprentice allowance factored in. So, moderate form and a usable pace but even so the majority of those left unable to run proper races. HITO fat and unfit for debut and unable to go the closer pace past halfway. The other Meehan runner - FConnolly green overall and never going smoothly. Then got unbalanced before 2f out and soon eased. Milwr a medium size and neat and a possible solid trainer debut with Holland riding. But, worked up and fizzy AP and spending 15 minutes bouncing around the stalls clearly no good for him. Predictably ran to freely in the race given his attitude and fading soon after halfway. Sheila's Buddy small and limited and added being green to be unable to compete. Which left MC with three, unfancied, newcomers to beat of whom two had given problems being loaded. PAJoy at least ran competently in the race but an Osborne newcomer would be expecting an easy intro FTO here and did not see out the 6th furlong. MZ smaller but solidly built but not fancied to go that well. Green in the race and unable to go with the mild effort the winner made 2f out and also not seeing the distance out. TBaby a better size but underdone in condition and ran too freely before fading badly. All very unsatisfactory. If a Pundit is heard to say about this race - ..they started this one at Newmarket so they must think something of them.. - then almost any sanction or retribution would be allowable. |
