GF going with 33mm of rain over the preceding weekend and dry since other than a brief shower (0.5mm) on Mon. Going Stick 8.6 reading having been 9.4 for the previous meeting. Why the NRs for the going? (Softer than they expected?). Stiff to Strong breeze as a Headwind. Rail well out from the normal Far Side line. Rail out by up to 20ft for the entire race distance. Assessment of race complicated by the Headwind but the race played out like a slow pace and a sprint late on of around 1.5f. AA allowed a comfortable lead crossing over to the rail in a gentlemenly fashion across his stablemate. Accompanied by PR but that one running with him and not pressing the leader. AA then able to up the pace inside 2f out and not make his full effort until nearly the last 1f. Able to get 2L clear and win comfortably but controlling the race. Moderate effort from PR who has not looked capable of moving well and smoothly to make a late race effort. Unable to go with AA and then stalling late on and allwoing the newcomers to close up to him. 2R of MA-RA-Sing able make varying efforts to chase the late race sprint. MA taking time to get going and finishing as strongly as at any time. RA unable to match the effort of Singalat (stoke up earlier by a typically active Gannon) and shouldered into a dead-end towards 0.5f out and then eased (but seemed to be stalling anyway). Interesting effort by TS who was 7L back at halfway and green and jockey not pressing her too hard in the last 2f. But closed into the back of the midfield and 2R which seemed a mix of some ability on her part and a moderate group overall. Richard Hannon on his website = "We run three in the two-year-old race, and Airborne Again will have learned plenty from his promising third behind our own Crown Dependency at Goodwood. He drops back a furlong but showed plenty of speed that day, so that won't be a problem." Barry Hills website news for w/b 9th May = "At Salisbury we have three two year olds entered - Red Art, Zammy [Runs at NMKT Fri] and Sajwah. Red Art and Zammy are both nice horses who are pleasing at home and are ready for a run. One of them will probably take part." Hannon has targetted the race over the years and usually runs a Group class one in the race if he has one. The second+ strings he runs tend to be capable of winning at Open maiden level, at least, and some can be better. This field seemed a moderate background to judge his 3 runners against. Is Airborne Again really a higher class 5f one? Marcus Augustus does not have a 5f pedigree and did enough to think he is the 6-7f develop type that the trainer sometimes runs in the race as back up to the good 5f one. Tina's Spirit has more of a 5f pedigree but too green here to compete fully. |
