SUMMARY
Going Good again with Going Stick at 7.4 reading overall having been 7.0 the day before. Readings in the straight are 7.4 for Centre & Far Side and 7.5 for Stands side. Stalls Stands' Side. Stronger Breeze (Strong) than previous day as a slight tailwind from the left (still mostly across bit shifted a little since yesterday).

Michael Bell on his website 10th May = "Our last runner at the York meeting is APOSTLE who never really got in the race on his first career start. I think you will see a different horse here and he certainly holds ability."

Paul Cole on his website on May 10th = "Overpowered is having his debut at York or Newmarket, and is a lovely individual. He has the pace to burn off his rivals and could go well on his first outing."

Richard Fahey on the Sporting Life website previewing his week's runners = "Gorgio's Dragon cost a few quid but is a laid-back horse who will improve for the run in the race. He goes okay but do I think he can win a York maiden first time out? Probably not but it depends on the quality of the other horses. He will win races but whether it's on the first day I have my doubts. He will improve and is a nice horse and it's great to have Sir Robert Ogden as an owner in the yard. He spends a lot of money and hopefully will get a bit of luck."

Odd mix of Halfway Positions to final Placings. Pressing, wide spread line, of prominent racers with Bop It steaming along on the Stands Side-Centre strip (doing his Captain Gerrard over-racing impression from the 2007 edition of the race in the overal lead. But, the first 5 through halfway within just over 1L of the lead and AZ at only 2L. Second Rank then amounts to Overpowered, Tortoni & Apostle at around 3-4L off the lead. Two stragglers then with BTop at 7.5L and either green or struggling to go the pace and, the touted, HRule starting very slowly and closing up to around 8-9L back having been further back after 1f. Which would mean a finish where the 2nd-4th home were the 2R trio through halfway, and the gap back to the fifth being one of the adrift pair picking his way through the faders and tired ones from the Pace Pressers. This would make sense as a way for a field to fold and flow under the pace pressure. But, a good question is then what is Noor Zabeel doing surving being one of the pressers (0.5L back at halfway) to win by 2L. Is that why jockey Moore looked so pleased (relative to his normal demeanour) at having lasted home to win.

Difficult race to get a handle on the quality and shape of the finishers. Look back to the 2010 edition and a bit more shape. The first 7 home including 6 of the first 8 through halfway plus Rerouted (2yo Gp3 winner & ran in the 2,000 Gns) who got through from well back. The 3 that faded out of the leading 4 through halfway included two season maidens and the Aiden O'Brien sighter runner who proved an OR70s maiden type filly. The later winners from that event were mostly correctly spread out at the finish with the three useful ones in the first three, a ready STO eternal placer type in 4th with two nursery quality & longer distance winners just behind him. The rest of the field were limited apart from two development types and they were both obvious to spot. Move In Time given a hold up ride as a Bryan Smart tearaway (see Bop It) and NPIR and Mariachi Man as a useful development galloper who get left at the start for Tim Easterby (see Hadrians Rule). How does this edition compare to that? Did this field contain the three (or any) of the OR100+ type that got clear in the 2010 edition? Are the three than placed 2nd-4th ahead of the CP and the gap behind them the Garbage Gap? Not clear that there was that spread of ability in this field most of them might be OR75-88 types and were left spread around by the pace, their own fitness and nous and where they ran on the track. If the gap back to 5th is a real indicator of below Open Maiden quality then anything in the 5th+ finishers who might be better types (The Smart & Easterby pair seem obvious candidates). Look back tot he 2007 edition and that featured a strong pace and a long tail of Garbage. The first three home were 13th, 8th & 10th through halfway with the winner a Listed placer and the 2nd & 3rd OR70s maiden winner types (including a Channon smaller one). The three later winners hidden in the ruck in that 2007 event AGAIN map well onto this year's running. The best horse in the race was Gp3 5f winner Captain Gerrard who pressed the leader through halfway and faded a lot. He did best when dropped back to 5f. Tim Easterby again started a good one in the race and Captain Dunne was midfield through halfway before fading. Well out the back was the Mark Johnston runner for the Maktoums who won STO but over 8f.

Noor Zabeel looked to be blown away by two better horses at Goodwood and the 2nd has already won comfortably at ASCT. He didn't look a better type plugging on in 3rd there which makes this win a bit puzzling. Presumably he has improved and had the advanatage of fitness and nous here and raced settled even through in the front line. Channon said after the race he saw him as a 7f horse and look for a 'nice' race in July (he said Conditions level) so he didn't seem to think this was a short term Group prospect. He clearly sees Gatepost as his Coventry horse but said this one could go there if the owner wanted to. Smaller type lacking scope and hard to believe he wouldn't get beaten by better physical types over 7f+ as the season progresses. Seems more an OR87-92 type. Perhaps won this clearly by staying with the front rank folding and the 2R placers making forward efforts to challenge him then fading themselves in the last 1f. Take the view that he survived the pace and saw off the pouncers and leave out the physical side then a horse to take an upside view of what he achieved. Hmm.

Looking through the rest of the field then no obvious tail of Garbage. An Open Maiden win for any of them not a Great surprise and any of them better Class? The least taking prospect would be COBChip who wandered into a volunteer 3rd FTO and didn't look real OR75 type. A surprise to see him 2nd favourite here and perhaps an indication of the lack of high class, and ready, newcomers. Tried to mix it at the front here and running down the rail (which some people thought an advantage with the round courses racers coming over to it). One of the earliest faders.

Apostle a rep for trainer Bell who is selective about his early season runners and bringing runners to York. A reliable trainer so if the horse was here you would expect him to stand up the trainer's pre-race quote. Bell is often profitable to follow with all STO runners in Mar-May because he is selective and most debuts are educational to prep for the STO peak. Apostle had been being pressed to compete properly at home (see - Gallop Picture - from Bell website) with Apostle 2nd right and the other horses Love Grows Wild, Correct & AWLF ex Carn Lady (not in order). Bustled along here by an unusually active Spencer and race centre track. Produced a solid effort forwrd effort before stalling. Another to look OR80s rather than a better prospect.

In a race stiff with regular trainers Kevin Ryan ran Tortoni. The trainer has a good record in the race and usually starts OR80+ types and has won it with listed winner Sadeek. This one the first runner for FSS Teofilo and a good type considering the small amount he was retained for as a yearling. Ready for the day and travelled well in the race (an awful low beeter than COBC for example and had to switch around him on the rail to make his progress. Another solid OR80s type and perhaps a bit of development scope to fill out the places with an ok set of three but not obviously going onto higher level (as in 2010 and more like the 2007 placers).

Paul Cole talked up Overpowered on his website and had only recently sold him for £13,500. Very fit and ready for the day and a taller type but narrow bodied. Travelled quite well behind the leaders and able to make a solid forward effort them fading in the last 0.5f. Probably not much scope to develop and perhaps go back to 5f. Perhaps one that struggles to win his maiden on the way to nurseries. Another example of how the really strong Cole debuts at major courses get to be shorter than 10/1?

Barolo Top another neat one by Amadeus Wolf and half brother to three good sprinters. Some each-way support but a strong Dascombe debut would have been shorter to start with. Too green to compete and got to a volunteer 5th plugging on through tired horses. See what the Market says STO and what level he is at.

Bryan Smart has only run two in the race with Captain Gerrard in 2007 (2yo Gp3 winner at 5f) and Move In Time (2yo Gp3 5f placed) both finishing well beaten for different reasons. Bop It another neat sprinter by Misu Bond (FSS and seem to all look similar). Ran too freely here and faded badly later. But, on the pace he showed, a dam that can produce better ones and the trainer's record in the race a horse to follow.

Tim Easterby also has a record of starting good, or better, ones in the race and Hadrian's Rule talked up as useful. Lost 10-15L in the first 1f and then used the effort he had through mid-race to get back to the group sonn after halfway. Able to mount some effort to get to 7th inside the last 2f before (as he should have done given the race he ran) fading. Another unexciting physical type by the sire HRE (who churns out smaller, compact ones mostly) but the 'hype' and the Easterby record suggest another solid OR80+ type. Trainer also ran AZ who chaded the pace and faded badly. One of the better types in the field and not 'Garbage' despite the last place and a good development prospect for 5f nurseries.

Mark Johnston usually runs a good one, occasionally a better one like Shaweel, for the Maktoums in this race and they sometimes place but event he good one can finish well back. Moon Trip very laid back in the prelims but turned into a tiger in the race and faded off a pressing run. In a forward season for the trainer when he has a lot of horses ready you would think he had chosen a good one to come here. Presumably a 7f+ horse and see how he develops but ought to be useful.

Giorgio's Dragon cost a lot of money as a yearling for his pedigree which means you would hope for a really good physical type. Rugged for much of the prelims but did not live up to the expectations when unwrapped. Medium size, a little narrow and mentally young and laid back. Clearly not ready to compete here and just with ok development potential. Ran much too freely in the race and another to fade badly. Another Open Maiden type with development rather than looking a better type for the money and the connections. Fahey has a mixed record in the race with the useful pair of Flying Statesman & Sir Reginald 2nd in tha last two runnings. Before that he had run some expensive purchases for major owners which often did not win (Whatyouwoodwishfor in 2008 at $80k & 20/1, Lecanvey €48k & 33/1 in 2007, Gallows Hills $85k & 33/1 in 2006, etc). GD's SP might reflect how the stable is taken much more seriously now but you could also read that record as the better ones for the stable make the places and the expensive ones giving their owner a runner at a major meeting do not.
