SUMMARY
First Meeting on Course with new Right-Hand Numbering for Draws. In line with LH courses the Draw is now a count of LANES off the inside rail (i.e. 1 = closest to the rail).
Major meeting for course with 2 x Listed races and 2 x Class 2 handicaps. Track normally prepared to be fast for these meetings and faster times. Light breeze on day, mostly against the runners on the bend and part tailwind in the straight.

£10k Bonus Race but a thin field despite that. Partly because there are not that many stables going with 2yos yet but you wonder why 1 or 2 declared for the Windsor £10k Bonus race were not here. The Windsor race looks solid with Hannon, Cole, Barry Hills & Beckett with runners along with 3 more Evans 2yos. Beckett & Cole have both used this race for their early starters in the past for e.g.

Which left a poor to moderate looking field unless Kyllasie was any good and ready enough. On size the field was unexciting as well with a group of OR45-65 types by that and Kyllasie not looking better than the others. She also looked underdone in condition terms (coat, etc.). Which meant that her being at 4/11f seemed to owe a lot to the Hannon factor and the lack of any opposition. The two that had run had been beaten miles and looked some combination of moderate and unwilling. SRD was the smallest and lacking any of the power of her mother (who would have won this by 10L+) and outgunned in this group and a bit green with it. You presume Evans thought that Jawking was another OR60s one he would have to work to get a win with and not likely to win a solid Maiden FTO (but this was a long way from a solid one).

The race was run in a slow time (exactly the same as Takeaway ran to win the same race FTO for Hannon in 2010 from a bunch or OR60s types and worse. He would be a much more substantial type than the filly Kyllasie). The tight bend on the 5f course and a good percentage of the race run on the turn means that front-runners who handle the bend and run a usable pace can be very difficult to run down in the short straight. Which was what happened here with the two Evans horses getting going well enough to make the leading pair on the rail. Jockey Doe on Jawking then slowed the pace on the bend (where most of the field hung left to some extent other than Kyllasie). Which led to a sprint of 1.5f in the straight with the others having to be better than the Evans pair to get by them. Takeaway had managed to complete a similar task in 2010 but off a stiffer pace with the leaders tiring earlier. Here, the leaders did not really stall until into the last 0.5f, let alone fade. It took Umph all that time to get 1L back on Jawking and still beaten a short head at the finish.

Kyllasie had got to within just over 1L behind the leader around 1.5f out but then got crossed by Jawking rolling to the rail. In a tight, messy, race like this that was enough to finish her chance of an ugly win by overhauling the leader late. On one hand this clearly gives her an excuse but on the other she was not making a taking effort up the rail when blocked and nothing much happened when she got clear. Added to her size difficult to think she is a useful one that the trainer might start here and perhaps not that far over OR70 and vulnerable STO if the Market cuts her too much slack for the 'hampering'. Sabusa in better condition overall and hustled into taking part here but in a slow race. Having to run 2 wise on the bend and then hanging in the straight was enough to ensure he had no chance of closing on the leading pair who had a soft time out in front.

In summary a messy race and not one to be thinking there is much, if anything, in it for the future. A poor rating overall for the race reflecting that view. Worth recording that is was run 2.13s slower than Redair ran 7 days before (off a stiff pace) and Umph was beaten just a few inches. He also ran in the Redair race and was not required to get involved by his jockey. He ended up being beaten a bit over 15L then and managed to force a photo-finish here. Which suggests he improved a little bit for being asked to do some work this time and the 'Front' of the race which was the quality last week (which supplied the first two home in the Brocklesby later in the afternoon) was missing here and hence the low performance required to get involved.
