SUMMARY
GFG with some rain in previous week. Going stick at 7.3 reading having been 7.6 at the April 15th Meeting (Magic City). Stalls Stands' Side. Stiff Breeze as a Three-quarter Headwind from the left.

Hannon on his website the day before the race = "We run three nice two-year-olds in the opener. Hughesie rides Trumpet Major, who, like Dick Turpin, is owned by John Manley. This fellow is also by Arakan, and he is the spitting image of Dick Turpin - he has gone well at home, and I hope he proves half as good. Jimmy Fortune rides Poole Harbour, who is an Elusive City colt owned by Robin Heffer of Canford Cliffs fame. He, too, has done some good work on the gallops, and we like him, while we also run a nice Dutch Art colt, Jacobs Cat, who is owned by Michael Pescod and Justin Dowley. There are plenty of well-bred newcomers from other yards in the race and you never know what you are going to come up against, but ours go well and they are ready for a run."

Meehan on his website news = "ALL NIGHTER (Newbury 1.40 p.m.) Nice horse owned by a new syndicate, Decadent Racing, managed by Sam Sangster. Will probably need this initial outing. ST BARTHS (same race) Nice Cadeaux Genereux colt who has been working very well at home. Great chance to make a winning start."

Rod Millman's website = "Mister Musicmaker, an Amadeus Wolf colt out of the very useful sprint mare Misty Eyed (won the Molecomb) makes his debut at Newbury on Friday. Although a late foal, he shows plenty of speed on the gallops and he’s one to look forward to but like all our two-year-olds, he will benefit from the experience."

Hannon on his website after the race = "The two-year-old maiden, which we have won in the past with such stars as Canford Cliffs, Strong Suit and Major Cadeaux, passed us by this year, with 40-1 shot Wise Venture nailing our pair, Poole Harbour and Trumpet Major, close home. Jimmy Fortune told owner Robin Heffer that Poole Harbour was 'a lovely horse who had the race won everywhere bar the last 50 yards', while Richard Hughes was similarly complimentatry about John Manley's Trumpet Major, observing 'he will come on a ton for that and he ran green, but the penny dropped close home and he would have won in another 100 yards'. The boss said: 'They are two nice horses who have yet to do any fast work on the grass, and they are merely ladies-in-waiting,' and, while it's true that both are colts and not fillies, we got the jist of his meaning which was 'they will both win next time'"

Interesting race and while not appearing to be a stiff pace there seemed enough of a late race effort to spread the field out into ability levels if not to get them in the correct order overall. With a 3-way photo and 2 other horses close up in 4-5th who might have been involved to win with different runs through the race the perhaps a feeling that-they-cannot-all-be-good. BUT, the front five make a strong set to be comfortably better tha OR75+ level and being able to judge how far they can develop a good question. Another would be where to place the Changeover Point? The 6-8th set have mixed claims to be OR75+ but non are dismissable so they can be placed just below the CP but with question marks over them. A very visible Garbage Gap back from the 9th home and with mostly the right horse in it. Anything in there usable? Is, the tenderly ridden, Space Raider OR60s or has a bit more potential?

Hannon has won the race (or a division of it and he ran 3 to try to ensure it was divided) on several occasions and in 2009-10 he has had clear margin and impressive wins for the subsequent Coventry Stakes winner. He also had a Coventry Stakes second (Major Cadeaux) win comfortably a few years back along with a range of other OR75 horses. Which meant that anything her runs in it has to be taken very seriously and the Hughes preferred the likely star if there is one. A little different this year with an owners sub-plot as Poole Harbour in the Canford Cliffs colours (which Hughes would wear on Canford Cliffs the following day against Dick Turpin) touted as being very good and Trumpet Major (in the Dick Turpin colours and by the same sire) not shouted as being a Canford Cliffs/Strong Suit type certainty pre-race.

Both ran very promising races and look better class without showing the startling performances of the 2009-10 types. Poole Harbour cruised through most of the race looking the more professional and with more basic pace and and immediate effort that TMajor. Seemed to get tired in the last 0.5f as most Hannons debuts to date have and stalling late and cught. Good prospect to follow.

Trumpet Major a little more green and took longer to get going. But, lengthening well in the last 1f and going on at the finish. Presmably a 7f+ horse with good potential.

The third string Hannon horse in this maiden can sometimes be a moderate one but are often low OR70s at least. Jacobs Cats looked better than that and above Open Maiden class. Ran much to freely int he first half of the race and allowed to drift home once tiring so finished further back than he should. An above average 3rd string for Hannon.

Trainer Alan Jarvis has some previous for strong debuts and turns out fizzy types FTO who tend to show what ability they have FTO. Development after debut can be variable though. He only had two winners in 2010 and they were 2nd (28/1) and 4th (25/1) FTO. In 2009 he had a 50/1 debut winner and a STO place at 25/1 and so the tale goes on. He must be profitable to follow in the long run. There were 4 x £50 each-way bets at 100/1 noted at the course which is nice work if you can manage it. Wise Venture a typically larger type the trainer has and a little green but mostly ready for the day. A very good, quietly efficient, ride by Crowley who seems another who gets a lot right while being invisible. OR84+ type but probably not one to follow givent he trainer. Other, more taking types to take out of the race.

On the top of that list would be St Barths who might well have won if you had swapped the jockeys around. Made a good start and could have sat 2R or 3R but Richard Hills hauled him back to sit too far behind. But, travelling so well he looked he could still challenge despite Hills making a poor job of picking a route through all the horses he had hauled SBarths behind in the first place (totally inefficient). Despite the lack of activity and the stop-start nature of the progress in the last 2f he would have been involved in the photo but for getting cut-up late on. Jockey Dwyer at York unfortunately. But, on circumstantials he ought to be good as Sangster debuts are normally well above the stable average and ones sent to ASCOT FT tend to be Listed+ class. This one an NR at the last Ascot meeting. Ought to be better class and one to follow.

Clive Cox has used the race twice before but for development types. Forest Row a Market mover in the morning and, unusually, that continued on-course in the mature Market period. Blew any chance with a slow start then green through the race and switched from far side to stands' side. Did enough in the last furlong to show an effort that amounted to more than just plugging on to stalling opponents. Another to do enough to stand up the OR85+ hype.

Main Focus an odd shape with short legs, some length and a bulky strong body. Somewhere around the OR75 Changeover point.

All Nighter probably similar and perhaps a little under. A better than average debut for the stable until tiring away from the better types.

Barry Hills often starts a couple of educational debuts in maidens and they finish behind. They regularly turn out to be winners of some sort and Space Raider did enough to think her is some sort of OR65-72 type and, although further back, Zammy ought to be similar. Macdonald Mor at a shorter SP that usually suggests a better debut for Paul Cole. But, going ok 2f out and a minor effort but then seemed to start moving awkwardly and eased. See how he develops if and when he comes back.

As a test worth seeing how Mister Musicmaster develops. In the last few years nearly all the Millman season winners have started over 5f in his early batch. They have stunk the place out on debut then run better S-3TO at longer odds. He has not had a winner yet this year but two surprise strong places from the early 5f batch. On that model this one will not be a winner and looks below OR70 anyway.
