SUMMARY
GFG going in early morning with 2.6mm of rain on Friday. Going Stick at 8.9 reading. BUT, rain during morning and light rain pre-racing CHANGED the going to Good. Strong wind as a Crosswind from the left.

Ben Haslam in his News for April = "The extremely dry spring has put our 2 year olds back a little as Ben is naturally reluctant to do too much with the youngsters on such firm going but it is hoped that the Three Valleys filly will be able to make her first appearance on a racecourse in June."

Time for race 0.35s faster than the folling juvenile seller with this winner carrying 8lbs more than that winner before the Apprentice allowance on the seller victress considered. Race seemed to be a Type 2 one over 6f here where the Prominent racers formed up to set too strong a pace. Metal Dealer hampered here FTO and never got going but different here and pressed on to lead on the rail. Adranian some mix of too slow for 5f and not trying that hard in two previous runs where the jockey has had to drive him along for most of the race. Fitted with a visor here and up to 6f and the jockey again active from the outset to get him prominent and competing properly. These two the leading pair through halfway with Medecis having the pace to sit 3rd and Maastricht going ok behind them and Regal Acclaim at 2.5L back but niggled along. The pair that fought out the finish in 6th (3.5L back) and 8th (5.5L) with Grand Gold crubbed along as he had been on a green debut and Pieve By Piece green and having to be driven along to hang onto the leading 7. Arrowroot perhaps 15L back and given an educational intro but finished with MMedecis & Metal Dealer and only 5L behind Adranian & Maastricht and making 10L back on them in the 2nd half of the race. An indication of how the pace broke up the leaders and allowed those behind midfield to plug on to fight out the finish at a moderate form level. Effect of pace made worse by jockey on Metal Dealer kicking off the final efforts well before the 2f pole.

Race has a mixed past having occasionally produced OR80+ through to better types. But almost always Maktoum family owned ones trainer by Mark Johnston or the occasional rep from a major southern trainer (Michael Jarvis won it witht he Coventry favourite in 2002). The last two runnings have been mostly empty with the 2009 race having 16 runners. The winner was a low OR70s type but finished clear of an OR60s and worse group. All 16 horses produced just 3 later wins, two in sellers, and one in a nursery off OR55 (at 66/1). 2010 only had 8 runners but a bit better at the front with the first two ending up in Nurseries running off OR79-81. But, without being able to compete to win. Behind in 3rd was a promising looking STO for Time Eaterby who still hasn't won and runs off OR62 now. Godolphin had a moderate one on debut for Zarooni who cost €200k and ran poorly and a useful reminder of the range of 2yo ability they have with Zarooni having his first runners in 2 days time in 2011.

The two pulling clear of the faders here look the OR67-73 types unless Piece By Piece has some solif improvement in him. Easterby debut winners are uncommon and those at longer than 5f rare. Which suggests a moderate race and some OR70+ ability. 2nd or 3rd string of 3 x newcomers for the stable and Easterby's has run two types in the race in recent years. Moderate newcomers who end the season maidens and S-3TO runners who show some promise but also do not win. The Market said Regal Acclaim was supposed to be better, or readier, but his nous meant he got caught up in the pace and faded. Not a strong prospect on the trainer's record. Arrowroot a bigger type and quite strongly made but not a 6f horse. Did more than just plug into faders in getting back to the group from being adrift. Seems a solid prospect for 7f+ and nurseries and one to track.

Grand Gold again having to be driven along for most of the race and then struggling to get away from the field late on and then caught by a decent newcomer. All signs of a sub OR75 type and struggling to win a maiden so sent north. Smaller type and no particular interest. Might find a soft maiden to win and stay 6f+ and will end up in nurseries, a lot.

Adranian more willing this time and able to find some response for the early kick-off to the final race efforts. OR60s of some sort.

Maastricht unexciting in size and looked a moderate mover at the walk. Not that ready nor fit. Similar forward effort to Adranian and has a bit more scope. But, not a certain STO improver to Open Maiden winner level and might be more Surplus Stock than better type for the Maktoum's lad. Maria Medecis still very green and not that balanced at times. Always going to fade given the way she ran the race. Can still improve for putting a professional race together and not a lost cause. Indepub small and limited and the SP here seemed down entirely to respect for the connections than anyone looking at the horse. Ben Haslam does front-load the competitive 2yos to some extent but the debuts are normally uncompetitive. King Laertis might be some sort of usable OR60s type and in good condition here but too green and never balanced on the track so did not show any of that lower level potential.
