SUMMARY
GFG produced by watering as 21mm applied in last 7 days. Going stick 8.6 reading. Stands' rail out by 6 yards at the 6f pole narrowing down to 2 yards at the Winning Post. Stiff to Strong breeze as a half Tailwind from the right.

Hannon on his website before the race = "We run three in the opening two-year-old race. Hughesie rides Balm, who ran well to finish fourth here last week. She is only a small filly, but she has speed and will hopefully be sharper for her first run. Roedean is an Oratorio filly of Julie Wood's who cost 50,000gns. She has a pedigree but is drawn wide, while we also have Leenavesta, a filly by Arch."

Ed Dunlop on his website before the race (Empty content in quote removed, leaving not very much) = "...Diamond Finesse ...is a nice racey ...filly .............. Arabian Flight ...., is a racey individual" [Most enlightening]

Two Regular jockeys for Hannon notable for riding elsewhere rather than the 2nd & 3rd string for Hannon. Ryan Moore stayed with Starfly who won and Jimmy Fortune preferred to ride Diamond Finesse for Ed Dunlop who finished a strong second. Hannon will occasionally run a useful 5f filly in the race and won it in 2008 with FTO Baileys Cacao (11/4). But the bulk of the fillies he runs in the race are 6f+ development types getting going at 5f just to start their careers. Both Leenavesta and Roedean have pedigrees which said that is what they were in Profile. For example, in 2009 he only ran 2 in the race both FTO, with Byrony 6th at 22/1 and won two nurseries over 7f and a soft conditions race over 8f. A typical development debut in this race. He also ran Brandy Snap who was 13th at 5/1 (drifting from 7/2) who proved poor. Some of the development types can be STO target wins over 6f so worth judging the FTOs here on that basis. Balm looked moderate to average and a smaller one and sub OR75 on debut. SP here said she was that and in finishing third (behind the CP) she sets a standard to judge, the well spread out, field on.

Rail Bias the stands' rail bias seemed to be in force to some extent here. The first three home here were in a line leading, 2R & 3R through halfway. The winner seemed to put in a classic run-the-rail effort which can make the winner look better than they are. Note also that the biggest closer - Roedean - ran down the rail while the bulk of the field were spread out and fading. In the following Conditions race the winner produced a similar race to control the race and then make his final 2f effort closest to the rail.

Starfly produced a better effort 2f out than My Lucky Liz at ASCT and still in 2nd place towards the last 1f but then got tired and faded which hid that. With the rail run here always going to be difficult to run down. Presumably ran close to what she can here which probably means she will get rated into the OR80s. Highclere rep interviewed after the race and non-committal about the usual Roayl Ascot question. Which seems right. A solid, precocious filly but short of better class.

Diamond Finesse seemed to run a very encoragin debut although again had the rail benefit. Held up early and crossed to the rail and travelling comfortably. A strong effort to close up to the leader and challenge late. Trainer debuts this early usually competitive types but of varying quality but can include better ones. This effort seems to be towards the top end of his early debut ratings. Ought to be solid OR85+ on what she showed here.

Mick Channon in a period in later May when he will introduce some of the best 2yos he has and often gets the odd FTO win in this period with better class ones. Miss Lahar looked a better debut on the Gallop work she did with Princess Banu and mostly stood that up here. Gave trouble loading and unsettled in the stall but managed to start ok despite that. Apprentice jockey not look that strong or decisive and took time to get up the courage to go for a gap, having looked similarly worried when the filly misbehaved in the stalls. Filly showed enough to be OR80+ but a negative for the jockey. The apprentice also road Signifer in the following Conditions race so is obviously trusted with the ok ones. But, you wondered where Hitchcott or Catlin were. One good answer was that Hitchcott was at Leicester winning FTO on what looks a good Channon juvenile and perhaps a hint that Miss Lahar was seen as the placer debut.

Enough pace in the race to spread the field out and if the CP is in front of Balm the Garbage Gap is somewhere around Arabian Flight. But, some interest in some performances behind the placed horses. My Lucky Liz a bigger type and finished ahead of Starfly at ASCT. BUT, she had got outpaced to a degree 2f out there and lost ground to Starfly. Which meant that on a flat, fast, 5f here she might struggle for zip again. Which is part of what happened. Dropped into second rank and ran a little freely there. Switched left away fromt he rail to make her effort 2f out and the lack of zip meant she got into a bumping match and then got hampered. Leggy and taking time to get going again after that. You would expect her to be up to 6f NTO.

Perfectly solid effort by Leenvesta in the context of being a 6f+ development filly. Not pressed into the race and finishing in the right sort of area in 5th to be usable. The other Hannon filly - Roedean - seemed to run a very promising race after halfway. Got well behind with a slow start and probably 15L+ adrift of the lead at worst. Running down the rail as an advantage but, for minimal asking, got back to 8th and still closing. Seemed quite promising.

100/1 Luv U Forever might seem to be an obvious place to put the Garbage Gap. But, seemed to run a promising debut. Strong build and fit enough to compete. Lost ground at the start then made ground in mid-race and ran widest away from the rail. Made a real effort to get clos eto challenging for the lead inside the last 2f. Fading late to hide the promise. Trainer rarely has 2yos but they are usually mostly ready for debut when he does. But, this one seem to promise OR66+ form and might be better. Track STO.

Arabian Flight given an educational debut unlike Diamond Finesse for the trainer and clearly more an OR60s type if usable. An ok size and ran too freely here then holding her head high in the last 1f. That perhaps just greenness. Showed enough to think she is usable at a lower level.

No real interest in the others unless Bertorella is a development Nursery type for Beckett. Very green here (as Rafella was behind Rimth in the equivalent race in 2010).
