GF going and GFF on the round course. Watering but no details given. Stalls stands' side. Strong breeze as a direct Headwind. Hannon on his website 2 days before the race = "The opener at Goodwood on Wednesday is the scene of Memory's impressive racecourse debut last year, and we are two-handed in the race this time around, with Glee being supported by newcomer Lolita Lebron. The boss said: 'Hughesie told the whole world in his Racing Post column last Saturday than he would win this on Glee. She is a big filly, who was always going to find five furlongs a bit sharp, but she met a good one of Barry Hills's in Angels Will Fall, so we were very pleased with her. This extra furlong is what she wants, and we hope that she will win for Julie (Wood), though our other runner, Lolita Lebron, a Royal Applause filly, also goes well and is ready for her first run." Odd race to watch and the Halfway Positions to final show little change with the two shorter priced fillies from major stables taking forever to haul themselves, just, past the 40/1 shot that seemed to get a Soft Lead. The immediate reaction after watching the last 2f+ was 'God, that went on forever'. A finish that the phrase 'Slow Motion Stuff' was made for. Some of that feeling down to the very slowly developing finish amongst the first three home. But, a question over how much of it down to the Headwind? A slow time overall and the pace early on seemed moderate. Despite that the jockeys on the 4th+ through halfway allowed their fillies to be sitting much too far back (4L to 9L at halfway) and would have had no chance in a 2F sprint at the finish. In that set-up they are likely to lose a little ground, slowly, even if they one of them was up to the quality of the 3 fillies up front (perhaps because the jockey gets too active to try to close the gap (that they created) too quickly like they are riding Frankel rather than a moderate 2yo). Glee, running the rail, took until the last few strides to wear down Marygold. Talked up by Hughes and the jockey seemed surprised by how comfortably she was beaten FTO. Ok size and strong in a workmanlike way. But, either not a 6f filly or not better class on this. Went like a 7f OR78-83 filly just handling the track ok struggling to run down an OR60s one that got loose in front. Falls Of Lora the second Zarooni 2yo runner and just an Open Maiden type on looks. Lost ground at the start but able to make the ground up comfortably to the ordinary pace. Able to make a slicker forward move than Glee and challenge the leader towards the last 1f. But, only able to pull out a short lead on her and then caught late by Glee finally engaging a higher gear. Just an ok debut by an ok one without hinting at anything better. Marygold punted on her intended debut then refused the stalls. Given an educational ride on her real debut when held up in a big field to stop her pulling. Made some progress into the area in that field for minor competitive types with OR60s zip to finish. Did not build on that STO but allowed an easy lead on a straight course and presumably showed the ability that got her supported a bit FTO. Plenty of inexperience and not handling the track that well behind these three. Iceni Girl got miles Behind FTO then showed some ability to get back to the group. OR70s on physical look and a balanced shape and strong enough. Better here but still green at times then rolling around in the finish rather than going forwards until late on. Can develop further and the type the trainer will win with. He needs to given the wife owens it. Hannon seems to go all out to win as many Goodwood races as he can in the last few seasons. He runs a lot of his better types here and won this race last year with Memory. But the second and third strings can be lesser quality and the second string last year was Miss Dutee who managed to win a soft Nursery off OR62. Lolita Lebron perhaps a bit better than that on Review but not up to Open Maiden class and perhaps late OR60s. Thefillyfromsutton moderate and no interest but a bit more interest in Single Girl. Trainer Portman selective about GDWD debuts and they are usually competitive types. Later May is also the period to expect him to introduce some usable ones and might even get some FTO wins with a good one (overprepared and fit for debut). Single Girl not quality but cited by the trainer as his 'Bargain Buy' for the year in this years 2yo-2011 book. He says - "She's very nice, Quite narrow, very light-framed, hot-headed and does everything easily... etc". Too green here and not handling the track but the sort the trainer would target at a fillies auction race given what she cost. [UPDATE May 21st = Hannon Website = "Glee confirmed the promise she showed first time out at Windsor, but Goodwood's downhill six furlongs was a bit sharp for her and she already needs seven. She won't be in the Royal Ascot team as there is nothing for her there, but she is a lovely filly and one with a bright future." ] |
