- Reported in January 2011 that he would not be renewing his licence when it expired at the end of the that month. 63 years old but said that the decision to 'retire' was a financial one. He did not have enough horses to make the training business pay and, along with other trainers, he said that there was a lack of new owners in Newmarket.
- Highlighted the low level of prize money as a primary reason for his decision. Said that a winning a 0-70 handicap was typically worth half the monetary value of 15 years previously. Said that his horse that finished third at Lingfield the previous weekend had not covered the travel costs fro Newmarket with the prize money.
- At the time of his decision he was renting the 40 box Harraton Yard in Newmarket from jockey Darryl Holland. The property was thought to be worth in excess of £1M and the jockey was trying to sell the yard. Racing can still make rich people out of some if it's participants.
