- Reported on February 23rd, 2011 that he was retiring and handing in his licence. 72 years old at the time and cited ill-health as the reason having had a heart operation and been treated for prostate cancer in recent years. First took out a licence in 1968 having been a jump jockey for a short time & then worked for Towser Gosden & Gordon Smyth.
- He will be keeping his Kremlin House stables going as a training establishment. He said he intended to make his assistant, Roger Varian, a salaried trainer to take over the horses in the yard. There were around 90 horses in training there at the time. His wife, Gay, would remain involved in the day-to-day training.
