2011 Debut Runs Page

Background Information
  • Howard Johnson ad been a farmer and NH trainer until he linked up with businessman Graham Wylie in 2002. Mr Wylie had built up the Sage Software Group (notable for accountancy packages) and took a back seat to spend more time spending his considerable wealth. Wylie and Johnson have set up the 'Transcend Bloodstock' joint venture to run the 2yos they purchase (purple colours). The Wylie owned NH horses run in the sage green and beige colours.
  • Reported in early 2008 that his existing stables had grown to 160 boxes (his father, Roy, had 30 and a dairy herd in his day). In addition the Transcend company had built a new facility 3 miles away at Stonechester with 43 boxes and this will be in use in 2008.
  • Has a solid record with 2yos although he has admitted that he is still learning about training young horses for the flat. In his development seasons his 2yos have tended to be at their best in their early runs and their form has tailed off. This may be an area which will change a little as he develops his method with 2yos.
  • Reported in January 2011 that the BHA had charged Mr Johnson on two separate counts. The first relating to administering Laurabolin to three of his horses. This is an Anabolic Steroid containing Nandrolone and thier use is banned under the Rules of Racing. In a separate invesigation he was charged with having a Palmar Neurectomy done on one of the chasers in his charge. This procedure involves cutting or removing nerves induce numbness and insensitivity to pain in the back of the foot. This operation is banned in racing although allowed in eventing and showjumping disciplines. The neurectomy had shown up in a post-mortem done after the horse had been euthanized after severing a tendon in a race. The trainer said he was unaware the procedure was banned in racing.
  • Both offences carry a range of penalties ranging from £1,000 fines up to 3 year bans depending on the severity of the case in normal cases.
