£10k Bonus Race. 5mm of Watering on both Thursday & Friday. Going Stick reading 12:30pm . Stiff Easterly Wind = Crosswind from the Right. Fast conditions and following handicap run in 59.87 by OR74 older horse carrying 6lbs more. Average pace and Halfway positions of last two through finishing 1st & 2nd more a reflection of the poor quality of the last three home and how they failed to settle running prominently. Trainer Zarooni has not had a debut winner before June 23rd in either of his first two seasons. A number of his early debuts, especially by fillies, notably green and a bit wild in May and early June in that period. His first wins each year have been in late May. Lovely Pass his 3rd runner of the season following a 3rd in mid May by a colt and a FTO win by a filly the previous day. That winner got off to a slow start and managed to win to win anyway. This filly very green and would not have won with a solid opponent and a stronger pace. Veered left at the start but able to recover onto the group because of the average pace. Running green after halfway then veered left again to centre track before 2F out. Despite all that the effort she was able to produce took her to the lead. Zarooni started some better class fillies in the late May batch in 2011 and this one presumably up to Conditions level because can rate higher just by being competent. Desert Sunrise the first runner for Stoute and at a typical time of the year. Usually starts with a small set of competitive 2yos and the usable Open Maiden winners place FTO and the better ones can win. The odd duff one can be mixed in. In 2011 he had his worst season since the early 1990s at least and the early batch were mostly non-winners and hinting at that decline. DS a good broodmare pedigree so presumably the job is to get her to win. Given an 'Educational Intro' by Moore here and ran well enough to think a well targeted STO Open Maiden win possible without looking any better. Spiritual Girl competent and another not really pressed in the last 1f. Borderline for Open Maiden winner level. Worth noting she had been working with a filly called We Are City in the preceding week and not going as well as that filly. WAC ran later at Newbury with Spencer riding (as he did in work) and vying for favourite despite trainer Bell not having a strong FTO success record. WAC Finished unplaced. Jockey Turner here and presumably behind Spencer on the WAC ride. Last 3 home all moderate to poor. Al Shababiya the first runner for trainer Ismail Mohammed who has moved from training in Dubai to train in Newmarket and has reasonable funding with Arab owners supporting him. AS fading early here. |
