£10k Bonus Race. GF from G 2 days prior. watering but no details given. Going Stick = 8.1 from 7.4 previous Day. Reading at 16:00. Stiff Easterly Wind = Direct Tailwind. Stalls Centre Course. Fast Conditions given the Tailwind. This sort of time normally run by Listed+ quality types. Group Class Margot Did 72.14s in this race when zipping clear in 72.14s on her debut. Hard to think the first 3 here are better than her quality. Consider that the fastest time over 6f here since start 2004 was by newcomer Bahati in this race in 2009 in 71.07s. She has never won a race since that debut to end 4yo season and proved an OR80s handicapper (see note on Annecdote below). The horses behind her in the list who ran sub 72s are mostly Group winners or placers inclduing Excellent Art, Dark Angel & Lord Shanakill. Have to believe the conditions were at least as fast as the Bahati day here. Placed horses already proven as OR60s leaking into OR70 for the 2nd perhaps. Pace held up well with first three home the two leaders of the initial centre-stands group and the leader of the Centre-Far group from early on and not suggesting a stiff Pace. Plenty of pulling and being held fro the first 2f before the pace wound up steadily. Race typically produces a solid number of winners but few at Open maiden class and most at Auction, Nursery or seller level. The better quality horses tend to get to the front but the lower class winners can develop from anywhere in the field. A number of ifflies in this field probably underperformed because of some mix of inexperience, running too freely in the first 2f and not handling the firmer going. A fair bit of not picking up and looking a bit ouchy on the ground. Hannon in a spell of introducing some better ones and this win meant he has won 4 of the last 6 races he has had debut runners in plus one strong 2nd and a 5th (by Master Of War) blighted by doing a number of things wrong but still running well and looking better than he was able to show. But, longer SPs for debuts not usual this season some 'Second String Effect' in the SP with Cio Cio San the favourite, ridden by stable attached KT O'Neill. LUML ridden by Cosgrave who rarely rides for the stable but has some Second String previous having ridden the useful Libranno to a 25/1 FTO win. Vestibule always looked likely to improve for firmer going on her light action but worth noting how the trainer's 2yos nearly always perform to a lower rating STO than on debut. They can then recover and develop back afterwards. We Are City supported in the morning before opening at a short price and drifting. Picture shows Spencer riding her in work where she had been going better than Spiritual Girl who ran a competent debut at Lingfield before this ont he day. Spencer gave WAC one of his individual rides and over-complicating things massively. Started off by a slow start which Spencer seems the master of. Then held her back off the usable pace when she was at the back of the big bunch. Perhaps he was trying to ensure she had a chance to win when he then took her out wide on the track alon at halfway and perhaps to get a clear run. Just a minor effort at 2F and looking a bit green and lost on her own. Got herself to 8th at 1F out and might have plugged on but Spencer deciding then he had to get involved and started pulling her up so she ended up 10th fighting him to the line rather tahn aplugging on 6th. Spencer did not report any WTRB to explain his actions. Getting his excuses ready for those who had put some money down earlier in the day?. Quote from trainer Bell the day after = "Our last runner of the day was at Newbury where WE ARE CITY was taking her chance. She was settled towards the rear and made some headway on the outside over two furlongs out, but could never reach the leaders and weakened inside the final furlong. She is sure to have needed the race and if her homework is anything to go by she is sure to shape up into a nice filly." Pace probably strong enough to sort the fillies out and the 4th-8th finishers ones to judge for whether they can be usable at a lower level. The answer to that for Annecdote is a definite yes and the one filly to really amke some ground. Trainer Portman does get FTO wins at the course in earlier season with ok ones he gets vey fit for debut. He won this race with Bahati and this filly a half sister he bought privately after her poor sale return to another of his early FTO winners here. Annecdote green here and did a lot wrong but staying on best at the finish having been last early on. Taller type and fit on the day. Might well have won if she had run a competent race. Momalorka a smaller type and less interesting but staying on again at the finish as if further might help. Opposite for Front Page News who produced a solid effort to get to 4th before fading. Typically competent debut for her trainer by the usable ones. Smaller type and need careful targetting to find a suitable race STO. |
