SUMMARY
£10k Bonus Race.

GFF from GF 2 days prior. Watering noted but no details given. Going Stick reading from 06:30 but a 26 deg C sunny day forecast. Stalls Stands' side.

Light to Medium SW Wind = Half Tailwind from the Left.

May 24th News on Noseda website = "I was pleased with our first two-year-old runners [Blue Nova & Becky Lou]. The filly that we run on Saturday and those we plan to run next week [Including Intimidate] will give me more of an idea of where we stand. I feel quite positive about the horses that we will be introducing over the next week. The Gold Cheongsam [3rd in 2f sprint race after slow start] is a filly we like and I am looking forward to getting her on the racecourse."

Picture of the Field in the last 1f of the race :- Race 1

Field formed up and raced Centre Track so no Stands' Rail bias to factor in. Mixed pace to some extent witht he first two through halfway both running freely early and being 1-2L clear of the others. The leading pair then settling the pace towards halfway in the dip and not really carrying the field forward and those travelling better just closing up without any extra effort. Big point to note is that the pace picked up soon after halfway turnng the race into an extended effort in the second half of the race (not the usual 2F out method) and this contributed to the fading.

A bonus race and an interesting field in review with plenty of chunky ones and only one obviously below Open Maiden level although some niggles about the other 'neater' ones as being borderline and placers. Given a mostly positive view of the field the - Why the huge gaps at the finish and 'promise' being shown at a good distance behind the first two home? To a large extent this does fit with the Review outcome. Only the winner in the field presented as a bigger type and ready and knowing enough for the day. Niggles about all the others in Review and making 11/10f seem like good value if that is a price range you take.

Artigiano a pleasant surprise in a number of ways. A bigger type with length and a good mover with it. Not looking like a real 6f horse but more of a 7f+ 'Rahy' type but better build at this stage than some of that type (say Rio De La Plata). But the biggest positive was his demenaour and presentation.

Too many of the Godolphin 2yos look taut mentally and sweaty along with already being hard fit on early runs. They then develop inconsistently from that base. Artigiano looks like one of life's natural laid back characters. Alert but professional and compliant. Showed the same in the race and Dettori able to ride him as he wanted to. Cruising along so well he was making progress by halfway and led without doing anything before 2F out. Strong effort towards 1F out when Dettori asked and pulled clear comfortably. Going on strongly at the finish like a 7F+ horse doing this at 6f on natural cruising level.

Which means Artigiano seems a horse to take seriously going up to Group level and, at present, seems unlikely to go 'Pop' in the near future as the wired Godolphin 2yos seem to at some point. Should go well in the Coventry especially if that race has a stiff pace and Dettori holds him up to finish the race off fully. Even if he finds better 6f types at Ascot then you would think he could win one of the 7f Group races around mid-season.

Pearl Noir an ok size but you could pick two holes in him. Ok height but a lengthy one and lacking some build and a little narrow. On the positive side a good fluent mover. But, immature and sweaty in the prelims like he was the Godolphin one. Ran more professionally than his Review suggested and an ok effort at 2F out. But, brushed aside by the winner and seems more of a 7F+ type. Ok for Open Maiden level late 70s in 80s.

Something entirely different again physically with Intimidate. If you characterised 'Royal Applauses' into two rough groups then Intimidate is in the 'Chunky smaller Fat Bloke' one (Englishmen & Third Set are in the Taller, Rangy, Narrower Group). But, a strong sprinter if he can shift himself and ought to be Open Maiden winner level at least. Why 25/1? Look at Noseda's FRAG by SP and SPs much in Double figures are less than half his runners. But, winners, including good ones like Elas Diamond and Regal Realm have come form the 25/1 range in 2010-11. Perhaps the long SP just indicated this was an ordinary maiden winner type who they thought would be green and Noseda had not run enough yet to fit his own string rankings into the overall ability level. But, a promising debut, assuming the whole field isn't suspect aside from the winner which seems unlikely. Got well behind for various reason but a strong, and extended, effort to get to 3rd and still going a bit on the finish. Ok to follow STO.

Then you have Composed at 80/1 and why so long? The Market seems to get a lot of info about Cole 2yos and you can only presume the message had said this was a development project and would not be competitive today. A 5lbs apprentice riding to add to the message. Still owned by the trainer. If you did not know any of that and just looked at the horse you would have a positive view of him. Like Intimidate he is the 'Short Fat Bloke' but even deeper and stronger than that one. Moves himself ok and he looks a likeable 'as advertised' sprinter who should develop with time. If he develops ok and turned up in a sprint nursery with OR80s after mid-season he would seem in an ok place. Why 80-1?

Another to run very well and especially given that the jockey nearly fell off twice and the horse kept on having to wait for the rider to get balanced again. Give him those 6L back and he could probably have got to 2nd. A bump at the start and the jockey lost an iron and took some time to get it back. Then a jink (or a stumble - at the same place as Lincolnrose last week) at 2.5F out and the jockey nearly fell off again and he had to make his late race effort from last. Better than the result and a likeable strong sprinter to follw. Look at trainer Cole's website on the 29th and he says thsis - "Most of the horses are fit and well, the change in ground suits the two year olds. Composed ran with great promise, it was likely the second best horse in the race and he is still for sale, and he is a ready made winner." Perhaps he was 80/1 because he was there with a 'For Sale' sticker on him and not to win and muck up a sale.

Gworn something a bit different again and less neatly made and 'complete' than many. But, a good size and solidly built. Did not look ready fo the day mentally and fretful and sweaty. Another to get well behind for various reasons and then got back into the race through the way he travelled and then produced a solid effort to 1F+ out. OR70s and good chance of an Open Maiden win in a less tough race.

Haverstock a smaller and neater model and perhaps what new sire New Approach will get a good number of. This the fourth runner by the sire and all have been neater types that ran ok without looking better types and borderline for Open Maiden winner quality. similar thoughts about Haverstock in running OK while being green here but might be the placer type and one to watch STO in a maiden rather than support.

Shooting Jacket another smaller one but with better build than Haverstock. But, very green and clearly clueless and ran that way. A 'Second String' for Godolphin you could put a line through although the Market hinted that it might have woken up a little to the 'Second String' effect. The Sporting Life 'Man on the Spot' feature said something on the lines of 'Jockey bokings do not tell the whole story with Godolphin' which is a fair comment hinting at the 'Second String' angle. Then cocks things up by saying check the Market for support for SJ which isn't how it works. But, another to watch STO and not a certain Open Maiden converter.

Symboline stood out as a lightly made one as a filly surrounded by a good number of chunky males. Lower OR70s and might be a placer and doing it on movement as much as bulk. Travelled ok and perhaps not stay here up to 6f. 50-50 Open maiden type back to a fillies' maiden in a weaker race.

Walter White has been backed on both his runs and another likeable type in review. A bit taller than some here but still good build and balanced set-up (typical of a Balding buy). Held up here after fading off a modest pace he set FTO. An ok effort and still 3rd towards the last 1f. Another fade and perhaps back to 5f NTO. Immature and a bit too fizzy in the prelims. Ought to be OR75+ with a competent race and perhaps 3TO over 5f?

Forbidden Fruit a smaller on in the field but a solid sprinter and a smooth mover. On the circumstantial side a Sangster debut for Meehan at Ascot ought to be a good one. Ran too freely on debut and a bit too free here. Another early fade and another who ought to be around OR75 and perhaps better on a fast 5f.

Proventi the smallest in the field and a near, ready 2yo type typical of McCabe. Lower OR60s at best and ran too freely here so an early fade. Developing towards a sprint nursery future.

Two NRs were of interest and would have been worth seeing to compare with the Picture/Video viewpoint. Gold Roll one to follow for improvement to STO from a hidden debut - is he the strong, lengthy improver? Quiet Prayer expensive for his pedigree so a better type? On the picture from April of him on the Ed Dunlop website a negative view forms. Very fit and lacking build and length. Would have looked lesser type in this group if he had not developed well. Ed Dunlop now puts sample work videos on his site. Check the one with Quiet Prayer in and he gets murdered by an un-named 2yo out of the mare Remina. Check whether QP proves the disappointment that info make him seem. Find out who the un-named one is as well.
