10mm of Watering Mon-Tue night and 5mm on morning of meeting. Track Verti-drained since the last Meeting. Going Stick = 13:00. Going seemed to have changed from GF in the morning into PM to FGF by race time. Medium Easterly Wind = Direct Tailwind. Race has been in 'decline' for some time and many performances in last decade just good sprint nursery level. The demotion from Listed level necessary. With this sort of field hard to see how it will ever get back to Listed status because putting in enough money to keep it at Class 2 isn't working. A look at the current position of the Marygate Stakes which superceded this race in some ways shows that it is below the qualifying level of ratings for the last 3 years so needs to improve to retain Listed status. That race had a dreadful 2010 field and the high rating for the 2011 edition seems to owe a lot to the 'self fulfilling prophecy' approach of Race Standardisation handicapping. Listen in on Mr. Tester.... I do not know what OR mark to give this filly but she has won a Listed race so I am going to call it 95 no matter what evidence there showing that figure to be too high. Then rank everyone else back from there. Jadanna is a late OR80s filly and did not run to that level because she ran in the leading line at a pace which killed off the other two fillies. She ran more settled and competently than the other two and able to kick off the pace because she is a better filly with a higher cruising speed. Went clear towards the last 2F here and the winning margin of 1L down to her getting tired late on and fading. The best filly on the day but hard to see her going on to Listed level successfully. Only two other fillies ran competent races and they finished 2nd & 4th racing off the pace and close to the far rail. Both settled well enough and handled the firmer going. Which means that Blue Clumber & Dream Vale hold the form level down. Even the 30 rating for Blue Clumber might be a bit high but you could make a case fo her not having shown her true form level before. Hung out wide on bad ground in the Lily Agnes and then not staying 6f LTO. But, how much would you want to bet that she wins a solid Open Maiden NTO?, i.e. meaning she is solidly OR75+? Not very much, probably. See how she goes. Dream Vale had looked good zipping clear at CATT but from a weak field and a low form level. Bought by Middleham Park Racing after that but no show in the Marygate at 16/1 and 33/1 here but as 'Second String' (MPR are one of the partnership groups that play around with 1st & 2nd colours to affect the Market at times). More settled here and finished the race off but a Nursery future and this run probably means she will start that career too high in the handicap. You are then into working through the other fillies who all ran flawed races to some extent to see which ones you would salvage for support in the future in the right set-up. Threes Grand went on a tour of the course after a slow start beginning by crossing over to the rail. No way through there so the jockey took the early decision to switch out to centre track just after halfway. Took time to get going there but a strong looking finish, in the context of the race, and looking a bigger type in the field. Might well have won with a clearer run through the race and stays 6f ok. Left the impression here that she has more to show and can rate higher. But, with the caveat about what handicap mark she would have in a Nursery. Linking back to the Marygate and the 2nd, 4th & 7th from that ran here and finished 4th, 5th & 7th here but mixed around. Since this race a 'drop in class' how does a Race Standardisation approach fix that? Part of the answer is that this year's Marygate was a muddling and soft event, aside from the winner, and should produce a ratings level which puts the race on a 'Yellow Card' for losing Listed status. The 2nd in the Marygate was Mayfield Girl and she agan ran below her best at the track. Look back to her York run and she was well clear of Woodland Mill & Dream Vale until a late fade. Here she got behind after a slow start wide out. She still produced a solid kick in the last 2F to get to 3rd and looking like she might go on but then faded back. She leaves the impression that there is a better race to be won with her when she finally runs a fully competent race. She has run too freely on her two previous runs and was lost here STO on softer ground. You would keep looking back to her Brocklesby run and wish she would settle down and run that style again. Sit 2L off the leader, settled, and then produce the kick she has to get to the lead and finish the race off. There has to be another race to win with her when she does that and the circumstantials of the way her sibling have developed with racing would help that view so long as the sire attitude does not take over. One of the ones still to follow. Judy In Disguise sold to an American owner since her last run. Bill Turner told the Stewards after the race that she was unsuited to the Firm going. Watching the Video would support that view. She is never going forward fully and get unbalanced at times and not stretching out. But, the Turner 2yos who win early do tend to tail off in form so that has to be borne in mind. Inclined to think the best has been seen of JID rather than expecting a flowering NTO. Woodland Mill talked up because of a 'strong finishing 4th' LTO in a Listed race but surely that is just nonsense. She was 50/1 and was outpaced and got to 4th by plugging on into faders recording a low form level. The 'full' answer did not really appear here because she looked another who did not like the going and unbalanced and a bit ouchy like JID. But, a nursery type as the trainer said before she ever ran. [The 3rd, 5th, 10th & 11th from the Marygate were beaten the following day in races at various levels so perhaps the value of that form will be properly seen as not 'Listed Clas' despite the label on the tin]. Probably mor einterest in what quality Our Diane actually is in the MPR 1st colours. Steamed along from a wide draw and running to freely to lead experienced fillies despite being on debut. Always going to fade off that but still 2nd into the last 1F. Shorter SP and vibe that she is ok. But, the sire gets a lot of zippy ones that do not progress much and OD needs to settle down. Although a pretty positive view of her effort overall she seems likely to be poor value STO in a maiden and still with the possibility of ruining her own chances by free-running. Lasilia did worst of the pressers and a try-on here on her way to nurseries on this effort. Sylvia Pankhurst just not good enough and you think back to the post race interview with the trainer when she won at WTON when he was talking up her running in this. Can he really have thought it was anything other then an 'Evening Out'? Tharawal Lady presumably not good enough either but perhaps feeling the ground here and no response then hanging int he last 3f and soon eased. |
