SUMMARY
GF after 5mm of watering from 6f to 2f out overnight. Going Stick Reading from 06:45am. Rail still out by 4M fro 6f to 2.5f out adding 8yds to the race distance.

Light to Medium SW Wind = Half Headwind from the left in the Home Straight.

Paul Cole website news May 29th = "Standing Bear runs at Brighton, probably needs further."

Average pace at most and a slower time. Birdman given a typically peculiar ride by Spencer on debut at NMKT bu the striking featue of his run there was the strong finish. Which left the feeling he might not look that good here until the last 1F and the uphill finish. Had been reportedly too free at home and hled up here and given an uncomplicated ride by jockey Lane. Took until 1F out to get to the lead as 4 were in the sprint from 2F out. But, pulling away and looking better at the finish and still going forward strongly. Just a medium size which will limit him somewhere but appeals as one who will rate OR80+ over 7f.

Many trainers avoid BTON just on reputation as a difficult track to handle because of the downhill section and the camber in the straight. Godolphin do not conform to that although they tend to start lesser types here. Zarooni's Overall Record at BTO in 2010 was 2-8 (wins at 5/1 & 13/2) and 2-4 in 2011 (wins at 13/2 & 10/3). Which suggests a subtle version of the 'Second String Effect' in play. Godolphin send 'lesser' types here and often ridden by the apprentice Murgia. They start at longer prices but if they if they are just Open Maiden class they will often be the best on show because many trainer avoid the track and others send reall lesser types. This field typical other then the presence of Birdman. Zarooni's record with FTOs here 2010-11 is 1-3 with a 13/2 win and 3rd & 4th in small fields at 3/1 & 15/2.

Bornean just below medium but a strong build and well balanced set-up. Ran well enough to think he can get to around OR75 without looking a strong prospect for STO.

More interest in Boomshackerlacker as a solid size type and ran well given the free running early and being green at times. Got tired late on but a promising effort and ought to be solid OR75+.

Danz Choice smaller type in the group and got a comfortable lead even if he ran a bit freely at times. Responded well enough at 2F out but not seeing the race out. Seemed the late OR60s type that Hannon would typically drop to BTON in the hope of finding a soft race but this one had more substance than some of the empty ones here. Perhaps drop to 5f but not one to follow.

Worth noting the Hannon record at the track which shows variation each year but approaches 20% Strike Rate overall. But a loss following his horses and presumably an indication he chooses the right types to come here but the reputation means even with a good SR it is diffuclt to make a profit backing them. His overall record 2008-11 is 9-45 with his worst year 2011 at 1-12 and a single 4/6f win and 6 that started 7/2 or less beaten. That followed a 4-14 2010 with wins at 8/13f, 5/2, 7/2 & 4/1.

Standing Bear essentially dismissed by his trainer before the race with the single line above. A little green but the jockey never tried to put him in the race as if his job was to let the horse get well behind. Runs for a 'Shrewd' owner so perhaps this is all part of developing him to get a usable nursery mark. Run at lesser tracks and when underdone and so on and then be better in an 8f nursery somewhere.
