3mm of rain overnight. Max temperature forecast only 12 Deg C. Going Stick reading from 06:30am. Light to Medium Easterly Wind = Half Tailwind from the Right. Interesting to compare how US 2yo Breeze Sales are done. Whitfield did a very fast 10.2s furlong in his breeze ("under tack"). See the Ocala Sales Results Page for their 2012 March Select 2yo Sale. Search for the Dam Seda Fina and then view the Video of Whitfield's breeze. The most expensive 2yo in that sale, by some margin at $800,000, did the 1 furlong breeze in 10.0 (the figure after the 10 is in fifths of a second, i.e. 10.1 = somwhere around 10.2s). Search for the Dam Henna to see what $800k on the hoof looks like. Note that some of the breezes were 2F times. Whitfield starts here at 6f when he was a speed horse at the Breeze? Work Picture shows him between Claude Monet (far side) and Ian's Dream nearside (made it's debut later the same day at Haydock). All very well buying a a 2yo that zipped along on a flat dirt track quickly but how is it going to handle uphill turf? Lewisham sold for £30,000 at the Doncaster Breeze-ups and a solid price considering he has no pedigree to mention. Look at his Breeze video and a different type to the short and bulky Whitfield. Lewisham a taller galloping model, Gallops with his head up and upright in front but a balanced galloper and finishes the 2F breeze off fully on turf. Looked usable on that. Go to DBU Sales Results page and search for the dam Almunia to view the Video of his breeze. Actually tested on the surface he raced on FTO. Average pace but enough 'Pressure' in the race to spread the fiield out by ability well. Changeover Point behind Whitfield and then a discussion over which side of the Garbage Gap Eastern Dragon is with the fact he was clueless overall earning him another chance to prove he is competitive below Open Maiden level. Space Artist a good visual example of how smaller, early, types can get blown away by the bigger ones with more umph and quality that come along later. SA too the field over to the stands' rail and able to set his own pace but blown away by the first 2 in the last 2f. Class level being visible even on a grainy VT. Roger Varian got a lot of Ready FTO runners in his first season in 2011 and only one of his season winners finished worse than 2nd FTO. Even so a loss backing all his FTO runners overall although profitable seams ober longer distances and later season. Like his old boss he started with the odd early runner by natural and ready 2os before the bigger btaches came out in mid-season. This his second runner of the season and both have now won with this at a longer than typical SP becuase of the Whitfield hype. Held up off the pace and a steady run through to win and clearly fit enough for debut. Medium but bulky build. Nursery type rather than better? Likeable effort by Lewisham in going clear before stalling late and getting caught. Late OR70s or perhaps a little better. Trainer used to get FTO winners when assistant to his brother but that seemed to go away in recent years unless very good. This one a recent Breeze up purchase so 'ready to run' to a good level before he reached the stable. Worth noting the trainer said he 'liked' all his 2yos this year because he had got rid of those he 'got rid of anything not worth keeping'. So worth checking his debuts out again. Worth noting the one horse he had reservations about was Reberty Lee who he though might have got 'too clever for his own good'. Which seems to have proved correct with RL packing it in during his races so far and now declared for a seller. Whitfield talked up on the back of his breeze and price and had been working with Ian's Dream who ran a much better debut over 5f later in the day. Whitfield travelled well here past halfway and a little free at times. Hung left a bit befor 2F out then less forward effort than the jockey expected at 2F out and hung right. Seemed spent by 1F out and getting unbalanced. See whether the trainer drops him back to 5f or switches to artifical surface NTO. Must have shown more in his work at home but this test on turf did not seem to suit him that well. |
