SGS from GFF 2 days Prior after continuous rain through most of Sunday = 21mm in 24 hours and 34mm in previous 36hrs. Going Stick reading from 06:30am. Medium NNE Wind = Three-Quarter Headwind from the Right. Meehan's website wrt Bairam = "He showed excellent speed that day and has to be fancied to go one better in this small field." Intersting field given this a Class 6 race worth under £2,000 to the winner. Unbalanced field with 4 runners from bigger yards, 2 owner bred, and all with placed form and look Open Maiden level at least. Field then rounded out by more typical Class 6 types with two moderate profile fillies for smaller yards. Field raced down the stands' rail and barely an average pace. Only minor bouts of FFH given that. Lack of pace probably supported by the fact that Miss Starry Eyed was only 2L back at halfway and only fully dropped towards the last 1f. Race turned into a 2F+ sprint between the front 4 who were within 1L of each other at that point. Only Forray able to seprate himself from that line with the others swapping positions in a minor undulation before going back to their starting positions. The usual question over whether the Stands' rail was an advantage not able to be difinitively answered. This field raced within 5-6 lanes of the rail with Forray on the rail fro more than 3F but then started hanging right so finished in cenre track. Other 3 out from the rail in a line as Echion - BBoy - Bairam and thye drifted right less. Following 6f race saw majority of field racing wider of rail than any in this race apart from Hot Sugar who ran poorly and had a WTRB report. The 7f fillies handicap saw some evidence for a rail bias with the winner cruising along on the rail. But she was the joint 7/2f and only just got past a filly who raced wide (Choral at 6/1 and see how she goes NTO). But, the 20/1 3rd plugging on late was the other runner down the rail. Forray a likeable OR80s type and travelled well to the pace here and the most held early. Produced the best effort in the last 2F and a clear winner despite hanging. Seemed to show a big, galloping action and perhaps a bit of soft ground better for him. Trainer McMahon in uncommunicative and downbeat mood afterwards and Fretwell not present. Trainer giving the impression he thinks this is a nursery type but would see what the owner wanted to try. The strength of the SALS race that Echion & Bairam debuted in looks ordinary Open Maiden level form at the front. The winner got beaten 2 days before when taken along at a fast pace on firmer going by Bungle Inthejungle (who had won a better firm ground maiden at SALS). Echion third string for Hannon that day and the second string has been well beaten at BTON in a stronger race than typical for that course. The notable part about the run by Echion FTO was he seemed to be finishing best. A smaller type in the group and similar here. Dropped from 2nd to 4th (losing 1L at most) inside the last 2f but got back past the other 2 late by plugging on best. Likely to be up in trip NTO? Perhaps borderline for Open maiden level given the advantage he probably had in running rail side. Bairam racing widest and that a probably 1-2L negative. Produced the 2nd best effort to edge into 2nd before 1f out. Faded later so dropped back in the last 0.5F. Perhaps OR75 and vulnerable in strong maidens and perhaps tried this one because of that. Trainer presumably under orders to get a win for new sire Haatef (stood by the owner) as well if he can, at any level. Barracuda Boy dropping back to 5F after runs on softer going over 5f & 6f. Stongly built and solid size. 3rd best effort but again fading late. Appeals as one to improve when getting onto a real fast 5f test. |
