SUMMARY
G from GSG 2 days prior. 4mm of rain overnight. Going Stick reading from 12:15pm. Medium SW Wind = Half Tailwind from the Left. Heavy Rain started at least 30 minutes before the race and continuing after it.

Godolphin jockeys = de Sousa (Bircham) & Tylicki (Tha'ir). Godolphin currently have 3 retained jockeys in Britain with Dettori, de Sousa & Barzalona (riding in Britain in 2012 rather than staying another year in France with Fabre's feeder stable to Godolphin). Story goes that they only wanted 2 retained jockeys but jumped to sign Barzalona while de Sousa was choosing between the Hamdan & Godolphin jobs. When de Sousa chose Godolphin they found they had 3. Dettori has said he wants to continue and has no plans to retire but suddenly finds himself having to 'share' rides in the Group races. He was at Haydock on Oaks day while Barzalona was getting lost on Kailani in the classic. Ted Durcan seems to have been squeezed out as the 'second' jockey in these changes without doing anything wrong other than not being as 'flavour of the month ' as the new pair.

Meehhan website wrt Freeport = "promising start at Newbury, going on well at the finish. Should be ready to step up on that and carries a fair degree of stable confidence." Good test of whether the relatively rare 'Confident' News notes are worh really taking notice of. Worth noting that this seems a pretty strong maiden on Profile for a midweek Ripon maiden and NOT a £10k Bonus event. A couple of other possible improvers STO in the field plus some debuts from ok sources to be Open Maiden level, at least.

Success for Tha'ir is the Second subsequent winner from the 6f maiden run at the track (Race 80) on May 20th. Following the 50/1 win for Mary's Daughter at LEIC yesterday. Has that race been under-rated or does the later wins say more about the shape and quality of the later pair of races? Discuss. Since that pair finished 4th & 6th how seriously to take Maputo & Three Pancakes when they run again. What about Off Art who was also 'promising' and even Poetic Star who finished just behind Mary's Daughter?

3rd race of the season with two Godolphin representatives declared and the 2nd were both ran. In the first the useful Artigiano won as 11/10f and here the Second String won at 6/1. In the last 2 seasons you could have made a healthy profit backing everything they ran in runner with multiple representatives. Just backing the Second Strings would have produced a better profit. 2 races this year and 2 wins from 4 runs and a profit backing everything. A Second String from Suroor (on STO) won here beating a slightly green First String on debut from Zarooni. Godolphin attached jockey on the Zarooni runner-up here and Tylicki on Tha'ir on his first ever ride for Godolphin. He was clearly thrilled to have won for Godolphin afterwards and in interview said he was not much more than a passenger because the horse was always going best and just carried him through the race. But, the real message would seem to be that lining up the abilities for the day of the Godolphin runners may well continue to be a Mystery to the Market in 2012.
