SUMMARY
Going GFG earlier in week then 18mm of rainfall Mon-Weds split evenly on the 3 days. Going Stick Reading from 08:15 on the day. Rod Duncan moonlighting as the CofC. 10 degrees Celcius with a Medium, SW Breeze. = Half Tailwind from the Right. [Heavy shower before and during the race = Going officially GSG at start of Meeting but changed to S after this race. *** Remainder of meeting abandoned after the Second Race had been run. Track inspection because of waterlogging.]

Slow time and only one slower in 2010-11 when OR60s quality runner beat a weak field on April 1st in 64.88s on Heavy going. Pace just average here and SL'Argent another early fade on softer going as at Warwick 3 days previously.

Rated a second 5f winner for new sire Sixties Icon whom the trainer stands at his own Sutd. Both have been in slow race on softer going and with the winner staying on best from lower quality opposition. Rated out of a solid 5f 2yo winning dam who has produced solid 5f+ winners so had the profile to be ok. Given he went to EDIN to debut he should have been OR70+ type on trainer's record and his picture shows a strong, deep bodied type of ok promise. What went wrong at EDIN FTO to produce the 'Lost' debut? Absolutely clueless seemed to be the anser. Rated started slowly, lost ground hanaging early and never got balanced an had to be driven along throughout. That was a tough race with a solid pace. In this 4 runner field with a modest pace he was able to get settled ok. Still green when asked to make and effort and challenge and not helped by the jockey asking him to squeeze through gaps on the rail. Can improve nous further and should stay further.

Channon on his website the day after the race = "When you call a horse RATED it's probably fair to say that you're putting a fair bit of pressure on yourself if finishing sixth of nine on debut at Musselburgh is a true reflection of your horse's ability. That's what happened to RATED on debut as he put in one of those displays that sum up the unpredictable nature of two year old racing. Clueless throughout in the analysis, sort up summed the first attempt up. In a four runner field at Folkestone today however, the son of Sixties Icon took the Maiden Stakes with relative comfort, although he was asked a question in the final stages and battled on gamely to account for Marchwood, another juvenile with previous race experience by a length and three quarters. The Boss was pleased with the performance although amused by the nature of his homebred winner. "He's a great looker and always was since he was born. The mare is a proven producer of winners and he's gone bloody well since he came to the yard. The commentator said he was hanging today, but he was still incredibly green. Martin (Harley) said that he looked at everything bar the job in hand so there's plenty more to come, I see him as a nice seven furlong horse in time. He's out of a sprint bred mare, but Sixties Icon has had his second winner in a week and I'm convinced he could be a star stallion. I'm biased of course because I've sent mares to him, but I like those of his that I train. The better the mare the better Sixties Icon will do. We have a few more to come, many will need a trip like everyone keeps telling me, but RATED will go on frem here as well and isn't short of speed.""

Marchwood another soft favourite of dubious provenance in a string of them this week. Did not see the 5f out here on debut on faster going and a sub-OR70 type so only going to set a good seller level even with solid improvement to STO. Look back to his debut form and he was well beaten by Perfect Words (beaten since in a moderate Auction event having been rescued from a seller) & did not beat Relay by far (that filly thrashed in a seller by rabbits since including Suivex L'Argent). Marchwood did not really have strong odds-on pretensions and vulnerable to anything with a bit moe umph. Fading late and not seeing the 5f out here after raising a so-so effort in the last 2F. Trainer often struggles to get a win with this type and this probably a good example why. He is below Open Maiden class and he isn't going to find maidens as soft as this in future very easily. But, his early season places mean he will be badly handicapped if he doesn't find something duff to win before the nurseries start.

Ladweb should be easily ignorable. The trainer has a poor record with 2yos and has only managed 3 wins ever and with OR80+ types and stuggled to get a success with those better types. Thsi one limited and he has not shown the ability to find a way to win with this type.

More of the same of the small and limited SL and soon fading after leading. Perhaps not even OR50s in the medium to longer term.

Conditions (Median Auction) = £2,500 guaranteed For 2yo whose sire established one or more yearling sales in 2011 with a median price of not more than £22000 Weights colts and geldings 9st 3lb, fillies 8st 12lb Entries 11 pay £ 11 Penalty value 1st £1,704.25 2nd £503.25 3rd £251.75
