Report on race and near double on the card for Pasaka Boy and his dam Shesha Bear who returned to racing in 2011 having foaled PBoy in 2010 and was second in a handicap on the card = "A bold attempt at a double featuring an unconsidered 50/1 debutant and his mother was denied when Pasaka Boy took the first division of the maiden at Salisbury only for Shesha Bear to be narrowly beaten in the mile-and-a-half handicap later on the card. But owners Graham Wickens and Jon Homan and trainer Jonny Portman enjoyed one of the biggest thrills of their lives as Pasaka Boy set up the possibility of the feat with a deserved neck triumph. Despite his starting price, .... was not unfancied after showing promise on Portman's gallops at Compton and got the better of the gambled-on Hipster by a neck under Lee Newman. Portman said: 'He's a very professional horse, quite straightforward and I thought the track and the ground would suit him. I was just embarrassed by the price, although happily the owners had something on and they've also won a £10,000 yearling bonus.' Co-owner Wickens said: 'Shesha Bear is very special and won on three consecutive starts at Epsom last summer, then just missed out on a fourth. She's a real delight, and has become like a part of the family.'"

Field came Stands' Side early with young jockey on Boleyn appearing to not knw the drill and started off on his own to the Far Rail before lokking over his shoulder and having to go back. Slow time and race played out as if a slower pace and a 2F sprint with the first two at Halfway and the horse behind then hardly changing position by the line. Winner took he full 2F to get 2-3L back to win. But, slow time perhaps also to do with the testing ground and a lot of horses getting unbalanced and looking like they were not handling the ground conditions well. Race often divides and even much bigger fields rarely produce subsequent winners at Open Maiden level. A sprinkling of Auction, Claimer and Nursery winners typical and the occasional OR75+ one. Which means delving too deeply into the ruck looking for promise rarely wise but some points to note.

Pasaka Boy anoher FTO winner for Portman who gets his ok types very fit for debut. Solid effort to overhaul the leaders but the readiness on debut means the form can tail off quickly. Worth noting the 50/1 and Portman not a trainer the Market takes seriously and it seems to take a long time to learn. Also worth noting that his dam - Shesha Bear - put back into training because she was such a poor mother with her foal. Including kicking him.

Hipster a solid effort and OR70+ but borderline for Open Maiden level. Worth noting how trainer Beckett is now into full form with 23 good runs in the last few days.

Boleyn a small but competitive lower OR60s one. A trier and stays well but needs a lesser race to win. Helped by being leading line in the late race 'sprint' here and receiving weight. Presumably end up in nurseries and might try lower grade if they cannot win something soon.

What to make of Jontleman who was in behind the leading pair at 2F out? Was he unable to raise any more of an effort or was he blocked in behind the leaders from 2F out to the line and never able to get a clear run? Jockey never tried to switch out which would not suggest he through he was going well enough. But, perhaps worth another chance NTO to show improved form and effort.

Then into a ruck of suspect ones and a surprise is there is anything above moderate Auction level in the group. Lucky Suit looks suspect attititude to add to lesser ability. Baltic Gin small and ran too freely and faded but confirmed downside view of her place LTO. More interest in Kwanto proving the female development winner for Saunders.

Some real interest in Sakhee's Ichigou proving usable and perhaps finishing down the field for an unfashionable trainer will make her value to follow. Look at trainer Blanshard's record with 2yos and it is moderate. In the last 6 seasons he has managed a single individual winner in 4 of them and no winner in the other two. In each of the 4 years with a win it was produced by the first 2yo he ran each season. Which means SIchigou is either usable, or he has nothing competitive or perhaps something unusual hidden away. A small but well built one and just enough in review to think she is usable at a low level. Likely to need to develop with racing to win but check STO for the set-up and for real improvement.

Also check Roz STO for better ability than an implosion at 2F out after going ok seemed to hint at.
