£10k Bonus Race. 4mm of rain overnight, Going Stick reading from 6:30 on day. Note that CofC saying that recent verti-draining will cause lower GStick readings. Light NNW wind as a Headwind slightly from the right. Pre-Race Questions Doc Dascombe on a small message service 2.5 hours before the race = "Lord Ashley is a horse we like but this looks a potentially hot little maiden. Soft ground is not ideal FTO, but he should go on it." What a SHAME. Really interesting field but the whole race ruined by two factors. Firstly the soft ground which some of the horses did not handle. But, more importantly a MAGIC CARPET strip next to the stands' rail and racing even slightly off it a real disadvantage. LA ran the rail and the only other to was Effie B who was adrift in last early. She plugged on down the rail to go past the faders racing wider. The race reduced to a match between Lyric Ace and Effie B and LA able to beat the lesser filly comfortably in a slow time. The second race was a 6f Seller which fell apart in exactly the same manner. The Rail runners doing best and the 14/1 winner the filly who got well behind like Effie B had then plugged on up the magic strip to pass the other rail runner. Those racing away from the rail spread all over the course at the finish and races should just not play out like that. In the seller the leader on the rail was engaged by another before halfway who was racing in lane 1-2 off the rail. The rail runner looked to be going much worse than the outside horse at halfway but, presumably helped by the magic strip, was able to see that rival off anyway but then rolled away from the rail and allowed the plugging on filly to go past him on the rail. No mention by ATR of the bias after either race although the course commentator kept saying ' the runner on the RAIL' through the seller as if he had seen something. The third race a 7f handicap with a big field spread right across the track and an even more laughable example of the Magic Strip next to the rail. The first two home ran the rail but behind the horse that led on the rail. The leader on the rail folded early and hampered the pair behind it and they had to wait to get by him. A few lengths to find on the best of the wide runners at that point but both of the pair inexorably reeled them in running up rail side. Easy stuff in the second two races for 'in running' punters if you just backed the stack of runners lined up down the rail from early race. Unfortunate because the five males in this field are a really interesting group to follow into more sensible races in future. Lyric Ace has been entered in the early season races which suggest the Hannon's think he is at least Listed class and he has ok propspects for staying further and developing ok. One of three entries the Hannon's have for the Conditions race at Newmarket next week but ran here instead. Other pair entered for NMKT are STO Black Monk and FTO Mister Marc. Good example today of how the Hannon horses snap together STO and look more knowing as well as fitter. Good ride by Ryan Moore to take the initiative and lead. Moving across to the rail was probably not a bit of knowing 'genius' from him and just circumstance given how he rode the later races on the straight course. LA at least OR90 but a question still remains over whether he is good conditions class or better. Interesting to see where the Hannon's place him next. For instance, if they saved him for the WDSR 5f conditions race in May then he is probably close to the best they have. But, the actual 'form' of this race not that strong and needs to be filtered through the knowledge about ground conditions and rail advantage. Well Acquainted medium and very bulky and ran in Lane 1 until pulling out wider to make his challenge inside the last 2f. Nothing much happened then and partly because he was pulling onto a relative swamp. Had travelled ok up to that point. Clearly better than this but the trainer often struggles to convert these early placed types into wins and partly because they do not progress that much from early runs in ratings terms. Unlike the Hannon better types. Also, an ongoing nicggle about what he achieved in the Brocklesby and whether that was another suspect edition like 2011. Lord Ashley has developed just 'ok' from 1yo and still a little gawky. But, a solid size and build and ran pretty well here given he was racing widest of the front 4 throughout. Able to keep tabs on the leader despite that and raise some real effort around 2F out. Faded notably by the last 1F but that was to be expected given the race set-up. Probably not a better class one but ought to be OR80+. Interesting to see what the Market sayd NTO. The 20/1 here can only be courtesy of the Dascombe yard input. Lesser horses from the stable start at shorter prices on debut. Letstalkaboutthemoney probably the most interesting horse to follow. Early debuts by the 'Burke' yard often include the best he had although winning on debut before late May was rare and the last example Chjimes back in 2006 (who was a borderling Listed horse in his juvenile days). Go back to Karl Burke's last two seasons with the licence in 2008-9 and his April debuts included Lord Shanakill, Corporal Maddox & Reignier. None won FTO and all won STO in mid-May. In line with the way the stable 'form' builds through the season. LTATM looked short of that quality on profile and pedigree but a real surprise in review. Biger type, mature and strong and pretty ready for the day. Support in the Market looked real. Never got going in the race partly through being green and also because of not handling the going and racing wide. But, a likeable type and one to take seriously STO and going forward. Mosstang a medium type with ok build. Notably laid-back in the prelims and a smooth mover. But, broke slowly then took off and ran too freely which had been a positive at KTNA with the way that race unfolded but a negative here. Ending up racing wide and held by the jockey. He had not got home at KTNA so was always going to struggle here on soft off a short break (trainer unproven). Always offering to hang right in the first half of the race and when asked to make an effort at 2F out he really started hanging, got unbalanced and ended up in centre track and got bogged down (perhaps his smoother movement suggest better on a faster surface). Moving so badly at that point the jockey eased him early and was looking down. Hopefully not an injury and just the conditions. The type to come back much better in the right conditions and be OR80+. [Update - WTRB Report to Stewards Post-Race = "Martin Dwyer, the rider of MOSSTANG (IRE) unplaced, reported that the colt lost his action. The trainer’s representative subsequently reported that MOSSTANG (IRE) was coughing post- race."] Effie B's second courtesy of the conditions and another smaller one. But, another by Sixties Icon that plugs on well in softer, slower, conditions. Ok size and shape at a lower level and moves pretty well. Probably a bit better than Vanessa and will win something and interesting to see how the sire's runners go over 5f in faster conditions. Piece on Hannon's website on the day after the race = "Our two-year-olds are never revved up first time, and Lyric Ace had clearly learned plenty from last week's debut at Kempton as he left that form miles behind when sailing home by five lengths at Leicester on Friday to belatedly get our juvenile show on the road. Unlike at Kempton, Lyric Ace flew out of the stalls, and Ryan Moore made every yard on the second-favourite, who powerd away from Brocklesby Stakes runner-up Well Acquainted at the furlong-pole, with Mick Channon's newcomer Effie B eventually chasing us home. Richard Hannon jnr said: "Things did not go to plan at Kempton, where Lyric Ace got messed about at the start and then ran green, but he was much sharper here and, hopefully, he will win again.""
