SUMMARY
0.5s faster than the first Division and perhaps a more even pace. Both Divs played out in a very simliar way with the pace not looking strong but a devent spread of the field at halfway, perhaps helped by green, small and Educ Intro ones getting behind the competitive ones for the day up front. In both Divs a group of competitive ones pulled away together (first 4 here) and it seemed very difficult to separate themselves in this leading group with modest relative changes fom where the 2F out efforts started (1L+ at most). Which suggests a usable pace and the leaders similar quality beofre development scope factored in. But big gaps back from them suggesting a mixed ability. In both Divs a 'midfield' at a respectful distance from the leaders but showing some promise and then the stragglers showing little and needing careful thought about assigning any 'promise'.

Worth starting with Bairam & Echion because they appear to set a good benchmark to judge the race by. This pair how now run against each other three times and finished within 1L of each other each time. They appear similar types who produce similar efforts at 2f out, Bairam better before but Echion a bit better here but Echion sees out the race distance better and Bairam stalls or fades late so has finished behind Echion the last two times. Both smaller to medium types of Ok build but lacking scope and both 'feel' like placers who fit into the OR73-77 range so are borderline for Open Maiden wins and always vulnerable to anything with a bit more scope. Which seems a good model for what happended here. Bairam got hassled a bit in the lead and might be better at a stiff 5f but seems to lack scope and an average nursery prospect. Echion a bit smaller n=but stays a bit further but has shown most of what he can do.

Which brings us to David Evans who has run far fewer 2yos in 2012 and had few wins. The pair he ran here were the 11-12th runners of the year when he ran 47 in total in 2011. He was also short of a FTO win and his only blank years since 1995 have been in 2000 and 2004. Given he normally runs everything he has early over 5f you would wonder why Verdane (Jk= J Doyle) & City Rambler (Beggy) were only starting out now. Both have stouter pedigrees to some extent and most trainers would not run Verdane over 6f just on pedigree grounds whatever he showed at home. The trainer has had a lot of FTO wins 2003-11 but only one after May and that was by a horse on June 8th who had been withdrawn on his intended May 23rd debut. So this late FTO win a real oddity and part of the change with the stable?

Verdane a bit bigger than the Bairam & Echion benchmark pair and more length and a rangier mover as his pedigree would suggest. Enough nous to sit midfield and then make ground before the 2F out effort started to be around 1L back of the lead when they started. Took the whole 2F to finally get by Bairam & Echion but seemed to be going on better at the end as his pedigree would suggest. Ready here but can improve his rating for 7f+ and trainer tends to be able to find second wins for this type and often get them rated OR85+. Given the way he was jumping every path perhaps he might end up in the Triumph Hurdle like Kimbeshwar.

Related apparently expensive at £80k but given his relations, including Wootton Bassett and other precocious 2yos, that price seems just middling. A bit bigger than the benchmarks and a similar build and lacking Verdane's range. Ok effort to pull clear with the leaders but starting to stall and losing contact with the leading 3 when slightly hampered late on. Just an average Open Maiden prospect on this and seems likely to be value to try to oppose STO given the vague 'hype' to favourite here and the mixed way the Cox 2yos develop from debut.

Herbalist the second declaration for reliable trainer Candy and first runner. A poor 2011 for him after seeming to be back on track after lesser years due to health problems with the string. No FTO win in 2011 either when he can often be profitable. Herbalist and ok pedigree to be OR70s and an ok size with length. Very green here so got behind and an inelegant galloping action in front. But, making up ground well enough at the finish to count as promise and likely to be 7f NTO. Ok for OR70s.

Trainer Saunders has not had his filly winner yet who develops with racing. Kwanto is one ok prospect and Silverrica showed promise here for a low level 5f win if still a bit wild. As tall as Bairam if a bit less build and ran freely to hassle him in the lead and fought her jockey. Got tired because of that but ok development promise from a lost debut.

Elounta bred by trainer Best and a small and stocky one. Size seems likely to limit her but seems an ok trier. lower OR60s?

See later quote from Baker about Eton Rambler. Looked small in this group and did just an ok Breeze at the sale and raced in a peculiar way with his head up. Picture on trainer site negative as so many seem to and then they can look very different at the racecourse. What does he do to create that effect> Looks one to let go and hope the trainer talking him up makes something else value NTO.

Panther Patrol has an all ready sprint 2yo pedigree and also sold at a breeze sale. The video of that shows a small and ready 'now' 2yo who seems to lack real gunt & kick. Skips along ok but lacking power and scope to develop. Unlike the quote below he seemed to be getting overpowered and left behind when he was pulled up rather than 'running a ncie race'. No interest. By the sire Tagula who was responsible for Beaver Patrol that the trainer had for the same owner so another example of connections going back to sires and pedigrees they 'think' ar good for them .

Elvin an ok size but has a stout pedigree. Hauled to the back here and nothing happened when asked to do something 2F out and the jockey stopped riding. See how he develops at 7f NTO.

Crafty Wonder the small one from Evans and if you stood him next to Verdane and said which one do you want to back Verdane at 50/1 or this one at 66/1 anyone could have spotted the relative value. The dam was a surprisingly nippy 5f 2yo with no scope but has produced a full sibling that won as a 12f 3yo. Given the size this one is going to struggle to win anything if it needs 12,

George Baker blog after the race = "Eton Rambler - this horse has always been pretty near the top of our 2-year-old tree. But yesterday he was too green to do himself justice, missing the break badly and taking a while to get organised. Pat was not tough on him, and allowed him to run on through a few horses for hands and heels pushing. ER surprised us with how 'green' he was, but in hindsight he has done everything so easily at home and has barely come off the bridle. Our horses always progress from debut, and we will see a much more 'streetwise' performance next time"

Trainer J-Houghton on her website having gor back from holiday so missed the race = "Poor Panter Patrol, one of my nicest 2yo was running a nice race at Salisbury and suddenly lost his action. He came home lame behind and he will be in his box for a couple of weeks. ....... So we are taking a bit of a break and not running much. I have scoped and blood tested quite a few and there is very little wrong, I just think the cold damp weather does not agree with them. A lot of trainers have had up and down seasons so it is just time to grin and bear it. They all look fantastic and seem in good form at home, so I will just tread a little carefully for the time being."
