£10k Bonus Race. Stalls Stands side. Good Going the previous day and no change on 2mm of rain during the racing period. 1mm of rain overnight with showers forecast and Going already at GS by 07:00am. Medium to Stiff Westerly wind = Half Tailwind from the left and entirely different to the previous day. Hugo Palmer's blog on April 16th = "The horses here are coming to hand in great style. The recent weather has meant that we have been able to get on to the grass which has made a huge difference. A group of two year olds worked on racecourse side last week including two of my neighbouring trainers. The opportunity to work a tight bunch of 6 babies was fantastic as it meant that they could experience a little bit of what it would be like on race day. That said I would still expect them to need the experience of their first run. Cernanova was ridden by Ted Durcan and showed some great speed. She is entered to run at Newmarket on Thursday and I hope it will not rain too much between now and then as Ted remarked he thought she would not like soft ground. Tipping Over was another who shone and she will head to Windsor in a weeks’ time. Both these races I am sure will be very competitive but are at nice tracks with good ground and I hope will prove good introductory points for these two filly’s careers. " Charlie Hills in April 16th new piece on his website = "On Thursday Mrs Warren will run in the two year old fillies race. She has been going nicely at home but probably isn't as forward as the two colts we run earlier in the week, and is more of a leggy individual. However the experience will do her no harm as she has a very good attitute." Hannon on his website the day before the race = "Tassel is all speed, being by Kyllachy, and Richard Hughes has been riding her and has been very impressed. He put her through the stalls this morning and she was A1, so, hopefully, she can give Harry Herbert and his team something to celebrate" All Fur Coat doing her 'Princess Banu' impression from 2011 whereby the smallest filly gets a soft lead next to the rail and uses that advantage to go better than the better fillies who are greener and running wider of the rail. Tassel a good enough natural to sit close to AFC and wear her down in the last 1F. Graphic Guest being the promising 3rd going on at the finish and Channon has started a lot of good ones in this race and at the Craven meeting in the last 10 years. Worth thinking back that Princess Banu ended the season struggling off OR60 in nurseries as her lack of size and scope to develop saw her falling behind. Similar stuff for AFC and looking into the others for more future promise. Tassel looked a natural early 2yo as a yearling and has developed that way. Just medium size but strong quartered sprinter type and ready 2yo. Jockey Hughes had been riding her often at home and positive about her and he usually shows good judgement. Attending the average pace ok here and raced away from the rail so a slight disadvantage. Took time to get on top of AFC partly because of the average pace and AFC able to turn the race into a 2F sprint with her in the best position next to the rail and handling the undulations best. Tassel not comfortably on the downhill from 2F to 1F out but better in the last 1F as the flat part then becomes a slight uphill. Not strong form here but Hnnon debut winners usually have scope to improve to better. Question over where she fits in the OR88-105 range. Assume she beat an OR60s filly going close to that one's best and say Tassel has 15-30lbs improvement and is she a Conditions filly at best or can go further, Syndicate owner talking about the Queen Mary afterwards but he is paid to do that so suspect. Much the same after Moore won on Starfly for them last year. She will win at Conditions level and the Hannon's are usually ahead of the others to some extent at Royal Ascot so might be up to going there. Upper level one to judge after a tougher test NTO. [UPDATE = Hannon junior on their website = "Ryan was very impressed and was bowled over by Tassel's temperament. She is such a laid-back filly, but she has always looked one of the best of our sharper youngsters, and, though like all of ours, she will improve for this experience, it was a very pleasing way to start. Richard Hughes breezed Tassel on Tuesday morning and was bubbling with enthusiasm over the filly, and I would imagine Harry will be keen to go to Royal Ascot, though she will need one more run en route. She has the speed for five furlongs, though both Hughesie and Ryan think she will improve for going up to six, so we have the option of the Queen Mary or the Albany Stakes at the Royal meeting, and we can make a decision nearer the time."] Graphic Guest a typical placer in this race for Channon and definite OR85+. Trainer won the race in 2005 with Group 1 winner Flashy Wings. He has had a place since with Missit who was 7f Group 2 placed as a juvenile then sold to the US and won a soft Grade 2 there. Danidh Dubai was unplaced and went on to place at Royal Ascot at long odds. A number of other Craven Meeting debuts over the years have produced better types and Group class. His only other debut over 5f for the owner here was Guest Connections at the Guineas meeting who won a soft Group 3 in Italy. This filly a likeable bigger type with scope to improve and her length suggests better 6f+. Took time to get going here and had the advantage of running the rail. But, a filly of solid potential to improve and be tried at Group level by Channon. After the mix of solid Open Maiden+ pair mixed in with ready STO in the first 3 the Changeover Point is perhaps ahead of the 4th home. Royal Steps the first 2yo runner for new trainer and owned by Rabbah BS (Dubai cronies of the Maktoums) so important to him. An ok medium type who fits OR70s somewhere but real Open Maiden level? Did a lot wrong here and still ran with some promise but not a certain STO winner depending where she is tried. LayOTHouse a taller type and slightly narrow and not the full 5f. Seemed to run like that here finding the 2F sprint not suited to her but plugging on again at the end. A 'Peak STO' type for Ryan but worth noting he has run a number of season Non-Winners in this race and not the best he has. The best tend to be OR77-82 types and win STO. Mrs Warren the interesting one behind the Changeover Point and Charlie Hills seems to have run an ok pair of FTOs at the meeting. Trainer had said MrsW would be less ready and natural than the two colts he had already run. Add to that a typically clueless and non-involving ride from jockey M Hills and she can improve a lot for running competently with a jockey who gives her a chance. Very green overall and unbalanced for a lot of the last 2f. Did ok given that. Bigger type and solidly built and the scope to develop ok. Looks OR80+ and can improve notably STO and see how she goes on from that. |
