SUMMARY
£10k Bonus Race.

GFG from G two days prior. Going Stick from = 11:30am.

Stiff WSW Wind = Three-quarter headwind from the left.

Meehan website wrt Freeport = "shaped with promise on debut before his third at Ripon to Tha’Ir, easy subsequent winner of the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. He did not cope well with Ripon’s undulations, but stayed on and will enjoy the extra furlong here. Should go well in what looks a highly-competitive maiden."

Hand Timed. Rail Out from start until just inside 4F out at one of the intersections.

Slower pace with Red Refraction breaking well close to the rail and allowed to set his own pace on the rail unhassled. A number of others a bit free before halfway. HCWhen missed having to be pulling because of a sloppy break that Spencer specialises in and the slower pace meant he could recover early. Jockey on Red Refraction though he was riding for Mark Johnston so increased the pace by 3F out and kicked off the final efforts by inside 2.5F out. Read reasult as an extended 2F sprint where starting position and path mattered.

The race has a mixed record but the last three runnings have been unbalanced quality with the first 1 or 2 at the finish proving OR90+ including 1 x Group and 1 x Listed level (plus a 3yo Group winner). The rest of those three fields have produced a couple of other winners, 1 at seller level. This field appeared to have a bit more depth and up to 4 Open Maiden quality level but a couple of those with niggles after the race.

Here Comes When came with some hype as being useful and trainer tends to only get FTO wins with useful ones. HCW a slow start and probably 7L behind early and 4.5L behind at Halfway. Good effort given that to produce an effort to run down the winner despite running a bit green. Plus hanging right twice and murdering a couple of other rivals as they were stalling. Trainer has won this race with a similar type in Lord Zenith and won a similar SALS 7f July 7f maiden FTO in 2008 with Prince Siegfried. Both had a go in Group races without placing soon after before dropping back in quality. HCW as big as Red Refraction and better build if a bit light in front in places. Flashy and loose mover. Presume OR90+ and try Group level 7f and average prospect.

Red Refraction narrower bodied than winner and limits him but ok size and mover. Had advantage of race shape here but a solid effort in the last 2F to see off SBeau and carry on responding. Early season work partner for Annunciation for the same owners. Presume OR80+ and clearly above Open Maiden level. Much more knowing and professional after a green effort on debut.

Freeport less taking and a bit below open maiden level and perhaps lower OR70s. Smaller medium type if strongly built. Sweating here and lacked pace to go with first two at the sprint stage. Only got to a non-threatening 3rd by sticking at it late on, Perhaps lower 70s. On the mild plus side staying on well at the finish so see if he goes 8f ok in the North.

Secret Beau ok size and build if not that fluid in movement. In front of Red Refraction for a long way on debut until a late fade and similar here after the jockey failed to hold him up early and pulled to join RR. Matched that one for original effort but stalling inside the last 0.5f when hampered by HCW and that meant he lost 3rd to Freeport who had shown less.

Stiff Upper Lip a lesser physical type and not that neatly made. OR67-73 type perhaps. Green and started hanging right at 2.5F out when asked to maike and effort so jockey did little. Plugged on at his pace to the finish without fading.

Sejalaat ok size and condition but perhaps a suspect attitude and more worrier than warrior. Did a lot wrong in the race and seemed to have a physical problem late on. In good conditions and ran too freely early. Then changed attitude when asked to make his effort inside the last 3f and not much happened. Head a bit up, not really going forward and getting unbalanced. Perhaps feeling something because towards 1F out he seem to be stalling and at the same time he saw HCW hanging across him to squeeze him onto another runner. Jockey saw it too and pulling back but given a solid bump. Unbalanced and seemed to lose his action then and eased. Action lost before bumped or injured by bump? Check for WTRB.

Stockholm a typically poor Millman debut now but why start at 7f when he was talked of as a May starting '2yo type' in early season. Smaller one and limited on looks and here for a 'Day Out' for owners?

A pity One Word More not allowed to run. A different type to the taller, rangier types who finished 1st & 2nd here and more a short and heavy one. Appeared to outrun that look FTO and was that run over-rated? Seeing that tested would have been very useful. Post Code lottery time when some races taking 5-10 minutes to load and many horses allowed umpteen goes to get loaded. One mild rear in the stalls here by OWM, having given no problems loading, and they whip him out, stuff the last horse in pronto and start the race without him before anyone can say anything. No way to deal with the 15/8 favourite and reduce the field to 7 runners. Poor stuff and perhaps the Starter more worried about hitting his targets for timekeeping and not thinking things through.
