GS by race time after rain. GGS as it had been two days prior. 1mm of rain overnight and showers forecast for the day. Going Stick reading from 06:30am. Medium to Stiff Southerly Wind = Headwind up the Hill and Half Headwind from the Left in the Home Straight. Very Slow Time. Rail out by 15 feet for whole race distance and Field raced well wide of rail anyway. Conditions much more testing than GS sounds after the rain and tiring conditions and hard to get the full 6f. Just an average pace but free running Mazeppa completely gone by inside 2F out. First two home both coming to the end of their efforts and starting to tip into fading by the line and TNT clsoing back to them. Euxton Hall shorter and precocious 2yo and travelled best again and professional to get the most out of himself. Produced the best effort but starting to fade late. This probably his top level. Interesting run by Top Notch Tonto up to 6f after 4 runs at 5f with 3 on the stiff uphill at BVLY. Has always looked a galloper rather than a speed horse and left behind for pace by better horses over 5f last two runs. Got outpaced here at 2F out by the moves of EH & RR and probably more than 3L towards the last 1F. But, still responding in the last 1f and finishing most strongly and only beaten 1L at the finish. Has he been running at the wron distance so far and has he more to show over 7f? Another complete and ready 2yo like EH. Mazeppa more of a larger frame and less filled in buildwise. TNT also probably indicative of the ground conditions. His four white stocking were visible AP but he was barely recognisable in the straight with, presumably, mud thrown up by the other three as he raced in behind them uphill obscuring his white blazes and leaving him with grey legs. Extract from BHA handicappers' blog for previous week for Reference = "We have published the 2yo ratings already, five weeks earlier than we have ever done before, writes Matthew Tester. Everyone needs to be aware that these ratings are still tremendously fluid. There will be some big collateral changes as the form evolves. Previously we have only published once those early upheavals have settled down. Therefore people will be unused to such big adjustments as they may see this year. This has been the toughest start to a season that I have ever known for getting a handle on the 2yo form. There are quite a few horses for whom there is simply not yet enough evidence on which to base a rating at all. I will be trying to get them on file as soon as I can. However, patience will be needed until the form starts to knit itself together. I hope connections do not get too frustrated as we go through that necessary process." Note that Top Notch Tonto had an OR of 79 before this race and Mazeppa OR75. |
