SUMMARY
40mm of Rain in previous 7 days incl 10mm on previous day. Going Stick from 07:30. Medium Westerly Wind which is a 3/4 Headwind from the right to past halfway and a Direct Headwind in the last 1.5F as they make a slight left turn to the finish.

Previous 2 races both at 5f. Class 4 handicap at 18:00 won by OR85 3yo filly with 9-7 in 64.29s. 6:30 a fillies' Listed event won by 5yo mare Beyond Desire (OR101) in 62.69 with 9-0 beating an OR85 4yo by 2L in 3rd.

Pace looked stronger here than in the handicap and all three races suggested that running in behind getting some cover from the headwind and avoiding pressing on was an advanatge. The Listed race won by the front-runner but that a Group winning mare fading late and just hanging on from the closers and running below her top form.

Halfway positions to final placings tell a lot of the story and the the race split into Two Halves either side of Tiger Sunset who was struggling to go the pace and 7.5L behind the leader at halfway. In front of him were the five actually involved in the race with JPA leading on the rail but being hassled from early on by the free-running, 'Big Moose', that was IndAffair. Of which more below. 2L behind them in the classic S&P spot was CIcon at 2L back and sheltered but going comfortably enough to think he could have got past the first pair even if they hadn't faded notably off their efforts and duelling interaction. PoeticP and Citius were then together around 5L back and racing off the rail with PP struggling with the basic pace and Citius green and caught up in a swift pace for the conditions meaning he didn't have time to settle into the race.

Behind the pivot point of TSunset were three that were within 2L of each other but probably 13L+ adrift of the lead. IW green overall and needing niggling along and Fallon decided very early to make this an 'Educational Intro' and did the minimum of niggling and let IW drift adrift. BG a slower break and the jockey did much the same as Fallon and jog along with him. Different story with Icanboogie who probably stayed in the stalls long enough to lose 8L and then seem more surprised than anyone that a race had broken out. Well adirft early but the jockey was all-action and Icanboogie had got himself back onto the tails of the other adrift pair by halfway and probably had to make up 8L+ to achieve that.

Which meant the leading pair faded back to 4-5th and ChIcon inherited the lead for a comfortable win having been around 3L ahead of PP & Cit at halfway and racing closer to the rail and more sheltered. PP beaten 2L at the finish without producing a real forward effort and Citius 3L+ having faded late on. ChIcon winning the race by being able to sit most comfortably behind the pace and then a comfortable win by just plugging on past the fading leaders with nothing behind able to make a 'Closing' effort. No candidate to be a closer because the 4-6th at halfway were under pressure in various ways and the other 3 were miles adrift and 2 of the jockeys not showing a lot of resolve to be involved 'Today'.

Interesting race to watch the start of because (like the KTNA race ChIcon debuted in) the 3 front-runners came from the widest draws and shuffled back and hampered some inside as they got over to the rail (the stalls are on a chute nowhere near any rail). A number running too freely and held as well. The outcome of the shemozzle as the wider starters crossed over was Citius & TSunset were hampered and lost ground at an important point and ChIcon fortunately popped out into an ideal spot and settled. How much ability & how much luck?

Chilworth Icon anonymous in a fast race on debut on the AW. Not put in the race then but showed some ability in being able to close up to the midfielders for minor prompting. Competent here and able to attend the pace comfortably. Assistant trainer Michael Channon interviewed afterwards and straight in advertising Sixties Icon and how the ones they have do not 'lack pace' but will stay further. But, the sire's three winners have all been plugging on in slow, Soft Ground races so what have they proved in faster 5f conditions? This time slower than any recorded in 2010-11 although mostly on faster going in those years. Medium size and neat like the others from the sire and is he real Open Maiden class?

Poetic Princess below Open Maiden class and ok in 2R after 1.5F but then started losing ground and perhaps partly too slow and possibly not going forward fully. Plugged on to an unconvincing second.

Citius just a medium one with a bit more substance than PP. Got shuffled back as the wide runners cut over and lost 1L and some momentum. Ok effort given how green he was and racing wide to make some progress and get involved for second before a late fade. OR 70s of some sort.

Milton Bradley has a dreadful record with 2yos and his last win a 3TO effort in an Auction race by a poor filly who had started out in claimer. But the odd winners he gets tend to show up to some extent FTO. Given that an 800gns type ought to be a rabiit who gets blown away. But, Indian Affair the biggest in the field and moves ok with it. Broke a little slowly from the widest stall and responded to being niggled along by taking off with the jockey unable to hold him. Sheer size pulled him into the leading line and he joined up with the leading JPA and the pair 'hooked up' after that. The jockey on IA then seemed to misjudge the 2F pole and instead was forcing IA to make an effort to go forward and try to take the lead by ahlfway (at least 0.5F to early). This set JPA off and the pair duelled away and faded badly by the last 0.5F. But, IA able to finish in front of race-fit JPA and clearly has the size to be competitive in Auctions races if the trainer can get him to settle down and ought to be OR70+.

Just Past Andover disappointing even given the set-up. In the two races he has lead he has faded notably to 5th. When held up a bit more STO because of a slow break (jockey at fault) he raised more of an effort but still only hung on for second in a three-way photo with two newcomers. Would have lasted longer here but for IA hassling him and that one kicked the final efforts off by halfway and the jockey (7lbs app) on JPA responded. Since JPA was still in 2nd into the last 1F he presumably might have lasted ino the last 0.5f before being overhauled without the outside pressure. But, the Brocklesby form is looking very suspect and JPA presumably below Open Maiden level even if he sees a race out? Does this effort devalue the Storm Moon race?

Tiger Sunset talked up by trainer Moore in early season and taken to Dundalk for a £10k race early. Started favourite there but an early fade after running a bit too freely in front. Broke well here and the jockey seemed to want to hold him up but got into fight to hold him. TS then go hampered as the wide runners came across and lost 2L and off the back of the leading group. It then switched from holding him up to asking him to chase early to close the gap back up. Which he struggled to do and then another early fade. Anoher short runner not able to complete a full 5f and certainly not uphill, into the wind, on softer going after racing incompetently. You wonder what Stan Moore was thinking to talk him up? He is a good size for his cheap price and has some pace. You might imagine that in short distance work at home with the others Moore has he perhaps looks quite good for 2-3F running over smaller, cheap, ones. But, put him in a proper race with other pressers and the trainer finds out what he actually has. Both with TS and the others that one has worked with at home.

Malcom Saunders has a decent record with 2yos given the small numbers he runs and seems to find a winner each year. He tends to have fillies and expects them to be sprinters. Unless he has a good one the fillies will need to develop with racing and win 3-4TO. The question then becomes is Baltic Gin up to being his development 5f winner at Bath at some level or does he have something better and BG is a duff one. Hard to judge from this because the jockey vied with Fallon to not do anything and just coast through the race adrift. One to check STO for signs of improvement when put into a race.

You wonder whether I'm Watching was as a set-up for a STO punt in a seller? Smallest in the field and presumably a limited one. Fallon did pretty much nothing as if his job was to make her form look as poor as possible on the printed page. Check for a punt STO.

Trainer George has only had a few runners but none have made the first 6 and Icanboogie soon adrift after getting a bit 'stuck' trying to get out of the stalls. But, he did manage to get back to IW & BG and ok size compared to them. That doesn't amount to much but he would have been 7th with a proper start. See how he goes STO.
