Medium Southerly Wind = Half to 3/4 Headwind from Right in Back Straight and Half to 3/4 Tailwind in the Home Straight. Mostly Headwind around the Bend. Slower pace and a lot of pulling to the bend as Spencer set slow pace on Glass Office then MSJust came across to lead past the joggers to liven things up a bit but field racing 2-3 deep around bend. Wide range of abilities and nous meant field mostly spread by ability at the finish with Changeover Point in front of Typhon although that one has scope to be better and arguing over where to put the Garbage Gap and whether ignoring the 4th+ for the future the rigth call. But, more than 800 races still to go in the season and lots of duff ones so picking through the rucks of fields like this for lower level promise still necessary. Glass Office a liekable stong type and a good mover. Ran better than the result read in a strong race FTO (with the exception of pondering over why Fraserbugh ran so well in it). Got a comfortable prominent run here but put the opposition away in likeable style and definite OR90+ and intersting to see how far the smooth movement will take him. Secret Symphony ok size and taller type if a bit lacking in build in placed, Sweating and cross nosebanded here and presumably one they are trying to get to settle. Another STO improver from the ruck of a slowly run NWBY maiden which was hard to read. Ran too freely there and fought his jockey. Good effort to chase and briefly challenge the winner here. OR79? Typhon NPIR on debut but more involved here. Well enough placed at 2F out to make a solid effort to 3rd and show what he could do relative to the first two home. But when asked to pick up hes head wnet left and he hung left and lost ground. Jockey seemed to get him straightened out towards the last 1F and he then made an ok effort into the gap and clear 3rd. Smaller medium and lacking length but solid strong build. Another they are trying to get to settle. Say OR74 and not wuite Open Maiden level but better than his 3rd here showed. Marguerite St Just a lesser filly and perhaps competitive OR 60s if the trainer is lucky. Slow early pace meant MSJ could get to the lead from wide and have a comfortable position to start the 2F sprints. Lacking pace for that but showed a willing attitude. So what and move on you might think. Except you then ponder what Channel 4 are up. On their Morning Line programme they are sending a plummy, nice young 'gel' of a certain type to go and dig out 'Dark Horse' juveniles to follow. What could the purpose of that sort of feature be other than to dig out OR85+ prospects from unusual sources who will definitely win a madien and then go onto to try better races. So why was Plummy Gel picking out MSJust as her 'Dark Horse' the previous Saturday? Since she was interviewing the trainer, a young 'gel' of exactly the same type, it all looked like free advertising for a 'mate', perhaps from the same Public school, families have known each other for years and all that. All very suspect. The Morning Line piece enabled trainer Maylam to regale us with the tale of where the MSJ name came from. A man had come up to her at the sales and said if she could guess the name of his French Mistress he would send her a horse to train. The Mistress presumably beinf for other purposes than to teach the man the French language. She found the name by looking on the Internet apparently. Did the two 'gels' concoct this twaddle down the pub together, or perhaps the wine bar. Wouldn't happen to Mick Easterby. Trainer Gask has a poor record with 2yos so no real interest in Dashing Storm despite the apparent vague promise. Perhaps more a sign of the flawed midfield. A bit more interest in Harrogate Fair who is a reasonable size and you could make excuses for his previous runs. In the process of making an ok lower level effort inside the last 2f here when hampered. Might have got to 4th without that and one to check 4TO to see what sort of nursery set-up he is in. Not a strong prospect but the type that might be value 4TO in a lower quality Nursery with a bit of help like a draw bias. Standing Bear running for 'shrewd' connections who announced he was a Nursery project before he ran. Allowed to jog around here by an inactive jockey to get his 3rd qualifying run. Smaller and compact and probably up in distance NTO. Would he be competitive off OR64 say? Go back less than 2 months and Magic Channel was Hannon first string and favourite on debut in a solid looking SALS maiden over 5f. That race has proved thin for Open Maiden quality prospects and perhaps past explains why MC was fav. Horse seemed to pack it in here and a fixing job for Hannon to bring him back over further in later season perhaps? Classic Art ok promise on debut then seeming to fail to pick up STO but in a race on heavy so inconclusive. A couple of bumps after he started but that seemed to be because he was head up and thinking and not going forward. Similar attitude in race from then on and packed it in after not handling the bend that well. Going backwards in attitude and no more excuses and show us a competent race to make us interested again. |
