GSS from SGS two days Prior. 3mm of Rain overnight. Showery day forecast. Going Stick Reading reading from 08:45am. Medium SSE Wind = Direct Tailwind. Trainer O'Meara interview after race included = "Running her in the Needler was a shot to nothing. She'd shown speed at home and if she'd got black type on her debut it would have been job done - we didn't expect her to win. At Chester she was poorly drawn. The aim will be to try to get some black type, she's very speedy" Someone should inform O'Meara that blagging worthless 'Black Type' in the Hilary Needler ended in 2010. It has been a Conditions race for 2 seasons now. He could have saved himself a pointless run from a wide draw in a Conditions event and done some sensible career development instead. Moderate to weak race on profile with the fillies with 'Form' below Open maiden level and open to a win by any filly with a bit of OR75 potential. Only possible for that seemed to be Our Diane unless Tussy Marx was a Barron FTO special and the Market and her size did not support that. ODiane showed OR70+ pace on debut in that pointless run and raunning away from the rail at CHES LTO and no chance to show her pace or ability. Given a straightish track run and an unhassled lead racing alone and she saw the downhill 5f out ok for the win. Probably OR75 at best. Inclined to look at the races as two different ones. Our Diane probably just the best pace fully and would win with a professional run on either side and her win NOT indicating a proven bias. On the Far Side the leading pair went too hard and faded which aided OD's win. Therapeutic given an attacking ride to lead the race overall on the Far Rail and always niggled along by jockey to be going a bit faster than she wanted to. A notable fade because of that and tired late. Her BVLY run over-rated and OR69 at present. Mandy Lexi a smaller trier and lacking a kick. Travelled better than Therapeutic in the leading pair then unable to get past that one at 2F out and eventually got by through persistence before fading herself. Another OR69ish. Dream Maker unable to go the pace after a slow start and got past Therapeutic & MLexi by plugging on as they faded and probably a lesser type than that pair. Strong pace folding on Far Side probably confirmed by Ena Sharples getting from an adrift 12th at Halfway to a going on 3rd (5th overall) at the finish after a deep closer ride by Nicholls. Hard to believe that 'eyecatching' amounted to anything more than seller promise. Which leaves a question over what Red Highlites actually achieved in making up 3L on Our Diane from halfway to the finish on the Stands side. Partly pace aided but RH and ok OR60s type and has a believable mildly improving profile. Too green FTO then did Ok in a tough race STO where the fillies in 7-10th behind a solid group have now produced 3 x NTO places in moderate Northern races plus Ena Sharples in this race as well and her 'deep closing' act. Trainer Duffield website after the race = Red Highlites ran a much improved race when finishing second in the opening two year old sprint. Beaten just two lengths she managed to behave reasonably well and got on with her race in determined fashion. It was only her third start but she had been unruly previously so it was good to see her looking like a racehorse and running like one. |
