GSS from SGS two days Prior. 3mm of Rain overnight. Showery day forecast. Going Stick Reading reading from 08:45am. Medium SSE Wind = Direct Tailwind. Middle Park Racing manager Tim Palin talking about Strange Angel after the race = "She was the most expensive Diamond Green (sire) at the sales. We only gave three ticks to three horses at the sales, the other two were out of our price range and she was the third. Ross Doyle (bloodstock agent) picked her out for us and said she could be a black-type filly. Tony [Hamilton] stayed that side to make use of the draw near the rail." MPR do seem to buy well in terms of competitive 2yos at varying levels at the sales interesting to note that Ross Doyle is involved and the son of Peter Doyle who has been the agent going around the sales with Richard Hannon for years and backing up that stable's success. Probably a pattern there. Surprising to see Strange Magic as long a 5/1 given Fahey's FTO record overall and regular profits at this distance and in the Jun-Aug period. This looked just the sort of soft race that anything usable from Fahey ought to be able to win FTO. Favourite on 5TO and with a generous OR of 70 and below open maiden class and the second favourite placed in a seller LTO, a Class 4 seller but still OR60s stuff. Check the 2yo Breeze VT of Strange Angel and a strong medium one and mature and organised enough to do a straight breeze and finish off in centre track and not needing a rail. So Fahey did not have to add much of his own preparatiom. Having had a One-two in the preceding 2yo race over 5f where both MPRacing runners had run stands side with the main group Far side on the straight course they reveres it and won here. Most of the field did the traditional thing, presumably prompted by the 1st race result, and came across to the stands side in the straight. Strange Angel just got on with chased by Red Cobra on the Far rail and a comfortable win. Probably just the best horse and would have won wherever she raced and the shorter priced OR60s types just handing her more of an advantage by wasting time crossing along with the 5lbs concession. How smug must the connections feel having won one race on one rail then bamboozled everyone by winning on the other rail with everyone using your apparent 'trick' from your first win. Poor maiden with horses beaten in sellers in 4-5th and will struggle in nurseries off their ORs. Small and limited fillies in 6-8th. Only questions for future are how good Strange Angel is? Did Red Cobra show anything worthwhile or helped by staying far side? Lost debut because failed to handle RIPN but seems one to let go. Last question over whether trainer Osborne can win something with Deepest Blue starting off from OR70? Trainer does have a solid record with nursery developers. Go back to Day 1 of the season and DB wa sone of several horses talked up before the Brocklesby. The BHA handicapper seems to have taken an unusually realistic view of that race and rated the winner OR77 when OR84 would be a normal 'Low End' for any conditions race. |
