SUMMARY
Rain Showers and Good going for this race and going changed to GS after race 3 (this race 2). GGF from G two days prior. 0.5mm of rain in early morning but dry day forecast after that. Going Stick = 13:00pm. Medium Southerly Wind = Quarter Headwind from the Left.

Far Rail set in by 3yds.

Just an average pace set by newcomer Nation who was hassled into the lead on the rail. Lot of free-running, being held and FFH behind. Nation stalling to 2F out and Morawij, Lasilia & BGarden closed up without making efforts.

Morawij has shown a strong effort in previous races and another good kick here towards the last 1f as Lasilia made a slight challenge. Effort got him 3L+ clear in the last 1F and mostly going forward still at the line. Mark performance up because he produced that effort having fought his jockey to some extent for most of the first half of the race although the jockey remained on top in that contest. High cruising speed and a good kick off it should make him a strong challenger in the group races coming up and has the physical scope to develop into the season. Trainer named the 5f Molecomb at GDWD as a likely target.

Solid Effort by Lasilia and looking back at her career so far you wonder what happened in the Hilary Needler. Why was she 12/1 and why finish so far back? One answer seems to be that she ran prominently at BVLY and helped to force a strong pace and faded off that effort. She appeared the trainer 3rd string at ASCT but wwas held up 3.5L off the pace and racing more settled. Able to produce a real forward effort off that and a slightly improved run over her HTON win. Similar here and held in last 3.5L off the pace and mostly settled. Again able to produce a real effort off that. Not quite getting home fully but competitive in fillies' Conditons events. Second foal and dam has now produced two juveniles who sold averagely well at best but have run ok in Listed & Group races.

Solid run by Botanic Garden without suggesting he is actually above good Nursery level OR80s. Star Breaker down in trip but sweating and running too freely on debut and a question over how he would look here. Sweating and cross-nosebanded here and ran like a horse already tired when the race started. Offering to pick-up slowly wide out so niggled along and found a bit of 'dead cat bounce' free-running for 1f+. But gone by 2F out and a weak effort then fading. Medium one lacking some build against the solidly made placed horses.

Nation presence here begs the question over what the link is between trainer Woodward and a, presumably, American owner using a minor Californian sire (a sort of regional 'Makbul' perhaps). Trainer had another by the sire declared soon after and that one a full brother to a minor stakes horse in the US by the same sire and a half brother to a 2011 Grade 1 winning 2yo whent he dam went to a high class sire. Like Star Breaker the difference in size and bulk between Nation and, say, Morawij visible. Nation showed okish pace for 3F to make the average pace but soon gone after that. As a general rule this sort of Listed+ try-on by a small trainer hints at an OR70s of some sort and they almost never win and fail to reach their potential after an early try-on. Nation fizzy in the Parade Ring and ponied down to the start with the trainer on the pony. Another question out of the race is why was jockey Sanders riding at 1lbs overweight at 8-12 and why is Luke Morris riding all the Prescott horses currently? Some split?
