£10k Bonus Race. 1mm of rain during day. S from SGS two days prior. 35mm of rain in previous week including 6mm overnight. Showers forecast during the day. Going Stick reading = 10:30am. Stands' Rail out by 9yds at 6f start down to 1yd at the Finishing Line. Light to Medium WSW Wind = Half Tailwind from the Right. Roger Charlton on his website & a small message service = "Derwent is our first two year old runner and runs in the 6.40pm race at Windsor this evening. He is a strong bodied . .half brother to Three Valley's, but unfortunately at this stage he does not show the brilliance that his half brother showed as a two year ... His work has been encouraging but I would have preferred the ground to have been fast as he is a good mover." Meehan website wrt King Dragon = "highly-promising start when third at Newmarket and was far from disgraced although unplaced when taking his chance ten days later in the Coventry Stakes. Working well again at home, he should appreciate the ease in grade. Good chance." Hannon's new website finally gets going = ".. Hughesie is back in the 'freezer' for the second time in a fortnight, so if we don't help our number one jockey end a run of 22 consecutive losers on the riverside course tomorrow night, his agent (Tony Hind), who received such rave reviews in his Racing Post column on Saturday, might no longer be flavour of the month. The boss said: 'We run two nice two-year-olds there in the five furlong maiden, The Art of Racing, who runs for the Sheikh's Qatar operation, and Dominate, .. one with a real speed pedigree. Hughesie has opted for The Art of Racing, ... who has been working well with our good two-year-olds, but Ryan Moore's horse is ok, too." Slow Time with field racing centre track to halfway then going across to far side. Field finishing tired with extended distances and entirely different race from a blast down the stands' rail on GF. King Dragon had show a relentless, if not sparky, finishing effort on debut and that sort of staying on just what was required here. Pat Eddery interviewed before the race and a brave decision to stick him in front of the camera because he looked less than in full control. Baffling interview with reagrds to Marvelino where he seemed to have missed what seems obvious from looking at the horse's form. He has run two good races on Polytrack around a bend and four bad ones on turf and especially on softer going. Why was Marvelino even running in this race over 6f on this surface? The trainer offered one reason which seemed a bit lame. He said the horse had an OR75 for nurseries and the he thought that was too high so why not give him a go in a maiden. One answer is that if you turn up in a WDSR Open Maiden you are going to run into real OR75+ horses off level weights. The second is that this is soft turf over 6f. Wait for the right maiden over 5f at WTON, KTNA & LNGA. There will be some dire ones coming up your horse, lacking scope as it does, should waltz away with. Also worth pondering about where all those Pundits and empty loudmouths who were jumping up and down before the Brocklesby telling us Marvelino was the next Hearts Of Fire have gone? Off following the Hype and never reflecting on anything past perhaps, an approach that Twitter seems perfectly equipped to fuel. Performances in race need referring to testing conditions. Dominate ran a peculiar race for normal conditions in getting behind early then producing an extended effort to make ground through the faders and be chasing the leader at the finish and seeing the race out. In a sub-72s blast down the stands' rail on GF would he have even got back to midfield? Second string here but presumably work at home does not test this sort of extended staying effort from 9-10L off the lead horse. Speed pedigree and clearly handles Soft well but is he a 7f+ one? The Art Of Racing's breeze at the sales shows him to be a shorter hevay one with some length. He just goes one pace in the breeze on easier and loose ground and displays no kick and looking a bit scratchy at times. Which is not far from how he ran here. Never travelling like a competitive one for the day and low level effort at 2F out before a fade and eased. Presume he will try better going or Polytrack NTO? A bit green here. |
