SUMMARY
Periods of rain and heavy showers spread through the previous 7-10 days and 5mm in the last 24 hours. Going gone from GS 3-4 days before to SHV by the day. Going Stick from Thursday = [Check for Update] = Update from 11:30 on Sat. Racing on the Inside Course again = Old NH Course This course not used in 2011 when there was no softer going but this the second meeting of of 2012 and both now using the old NH straight to stop the main strip getting chewed up.

Stiff and Cold Westerly Wind = Half Headwind from the Right.

Slow time. Dreamy Ciara ran 63.34s on official GS in heavy rain shower and similar wind conditions in previous race on course this year (GngStick 6.8 to 6.2 here). DC carried 3lbs less than EB here. First race on card (this the second) a 3yo fillies handicap won by 8L (EB won by 7L) by OR70 filly carrying 5lbs less who hung left well past Centre track and raced alone.

Race proved as uninformative as the presentation of the horses before the race suggested. Effie B had got a soft, volunteer 2nd, on debut helped by a big rail bias and a lot of hanging and not handling soft going by opponents. But, she is an ok size and competent and only had to repeat her debut display of running down the rail, mostly straight, and being able to handle the soft ground for a comfortable win. Another 2yo winner on slow, soft ground for Sixties Icon but still with the same niggle that this was a staying effort and handling the going best while others were imploding in various ways. Some sort of OR70s and unproven as a real 5f type but stays ok on soft so will get other chances to win through a busy season.

Looking at the other four before the race you might try to find something to beat Effie B but all have negatives and the conclusion is that unless either of Marshland or possibly Golac is better than they look they might be ok. Golac bigger the EN and a bit more bulk. But, not that fit despite the lighter frame in places (Channon typical) and the ribs showing. Also, immature mentally and getting a bit worked up and fizzy but clearly without having any idea what this is all about. Ran competently enough to halfway given that but a suspect response when asked to pick up in the last 2f. Head went up a bit and hanging left at intervals (the field were racing down a rail on their right and all hung left off it to some extent). Jockey Hitchcott got stuck in with the whip early and often in a surprising way for a 2yo newcomer. Which suggested he hasn't proved the heartiest battler at home. The video of the recent gallop he was in on Channon's website shows him finishing in the front of the group behind the older lead horse but being pushed along the whole time and actually has the whip used on him 4 times in 2f in a slow gallop at home. The other 2yos in the gallop look an ok bunch of unraced colts and they all trundle along unbothered by their jockeys other than the odd bit of light niggling through greenness. So, Golac is an ok size but could do with bulking up a bit. Could be an ok OR70s type but obviously with a suspect temperament at present which he needs to lose.

The two debut wins by Johnston 2yos in early April followed a more typical debut by one in the Brocklesby where he blasted along in the leading line then folded tamely. The two debut wins were in £10k bonus races and both seemed to owe a lot to superior talent. Marshland an unusual shape and not an obvious sprinter. The tallest in the field but narrow along with being leggy and bit lengthy. Mature in looks and attititude and spent a lot of time mentally dominating Top Boy (or Not So Top Boy) in the pre-Parade when that one was unfortunate enough to be dropped in behind him to get a lead. Ears flat back and all that. A bit of the 'washing line' physique about him and a mixed pedigree and stout on the dam's side. Is this really a sprinter or is he here because he is mature and ready to go? Gave the more usual Johnston debut of leading to past halfway then getting outpaced (?) and hanging by just inside 2F out. The hanging didn't really stop and legless by the finish. An ok size and range and is he the type that will be winning in 7-8f nurseries in later season assisted by a handicap mark from flopping around in 5-6f events? Ok for OR70+ at the right distance.

Trainer Ryan has started similar types in this race in the last two years with compact little-medium OR65-72 sprinter types (see the Comparison Photo in last year's result summary). BB rugged here so a bit hard to judge his bulk but the smallest and most compact of the five and looking another of the same type. Wont be good enough to trouble EB on debut and might struggle to win and probably below Open Maiden level. Ensured that he was not going to get involved by a slow start and getting a bit adrift early. The made that worse by running freely back to the leading three who were going an average pace at most. He was then another getting a lot of practice in for 'Hanging Left' in the final 2F to the point where he was entirely unable to show what he might be able to do. All part of the race falling apart behind Effie B's unexciting but orderly wander down the rail.

Derek Shaw has a dreaful record with 2yos and since 2004 his record stands at 1 x 2yo winner from 51 individual runners. A few have shown ok ability but not won, like Feelin Foxy who also ran ok on debut. Top Boy also an unusually expensive one for him. Physically he is fine and an ok size and type. More width and build than some by his sire. Fine for OR70+ and ok scope to improve. But, he is absolutely clueless and a slob. Mentally young and allows himself to be bullied by the more mature Marshland. Trainer Shaw is there and takes over walking him around as if he is expecting a bit of trouble although he never gets that lively and being 'tied' to Marshland in the prelims and going to post seems to keep him under control. Best not to upset the boss. But, the chaos comes back in the race with Marshland zipping off in the lead. He veers left and part bucks and the jockey does well to stay on. The then hangs right when the others have gone and might be 10L adrift by them Like BB he then compounds that by running freely and tearing off after the leading three. To sucn an extent he is 3rd just 2L off the lead at halfway. But, hanging badly left at 2F out and soon adrift again. While a trainer may not want to have a horse wired for it's 2yo debut you surely want it to have a bit more idea and readiness than this? He could have unseated the jockey and been running around loose or whatever. So, Top Boy another of those you wish had a 'Hannon' rug on it because you would know it would achieve it's OR75+ potential and find an orderly win. With this trainer things are clearly less asshawed.
