SUMMARY
[UPDATE = Rain during morning changed going from GSS to SGS. Going then changed from SGS to SHV after race 2, this was race 1, as rain continued.]. GSS but no Going Stick Reading because the "Stick Malfunctioned". Terrific. 36mm of rain on previous Wed-Thu and 6mm since. Chance of showers on the day. Rail apparently at full width. Medium NE Wind = Crosswind from the Left for 3f then Half Headwind from the Left after the turn to the plateau straight.

Notably slow time - more than 1.5s slower than any 2010-11 time in years which lacked softer going. Slowest recent times at a similar level with Society Music (T4) running 69.84s on soft and Clumber Place (F) running 69.67s on GS in the equivalent race in 2004 & 2008.

With the odd exceptions this has proved a moderate race with limited future 'Open Maiden' relevance in the last four years - 2008-11. In 2008 the runner-up failed to win and the 3rd-4th won a claimer and OR60s nurseries. Hidden in 5th was a developer for a stall stable that won 3 races and placed at Group level. In 2009 a similar story with the 2nd & 6th winning sellers and the best filly in 3rd who developed to be an OR80s sprinter (and still is). 2010 only had 1 later winner in 9 fillies behind the winner and that at seller level. The winner won the Hilary Needler in it's last year as a Listed race but looked below that quality in a lot of later beaten runs. Last year the 10 fillies behind the winner produced a single later winner with the 3rd developing to win a maiden and real Listed event. So, an odd mixed record for the race with mostly moderate fillies involved and the vast majority never win. Amongst the few low quality winners that have come from the race has been a Single better quality one in each year and only one of those won the race.

Looking at this year's race you would be tempted to put the Changeover Point behind the winner with Back In The Frame borderline Open Maiden class and always vulnerable to a solid newcomer. Of the others you might ponder over whether either of Excel Yourself or Lasilia have some Open Maiden potential given that the going conditions give any filly a bit of an excuse for being behind the CP. With one exception the others are definitely low quality nursery or worse types. The interesting one being Modern Lady

[Update] 23rd = Dascombe on a small message service before the race = "BITF will know her job better today & has an obvious chance as she's shown the most ot those that have run. A few unknowns tho."

Trainer Given has a moderate record with 2yos overall but he always used to get FTO wins and they were split as 5f wins in early season for naturals and later season debut wins for real good ones like Summitville. In recent seasons he has lacked a debut win although there have been a number of earlier to mid-season FTO places. In some seasons he seems to have lacked the right 2yos and some hints of later starts. But, with hindsight, Jadanna is by a sire of precocious 2yos and had enough nous here to run a competent race and win in a moderate maiden. Drawn 9 on the outside but broke well and after being held back behind the leading line the jockey found himself able to cross quickly to the rail behind the leaders and in front of the slow starters. Which meant Jadanna was in the classic S&P position on the rail before 1F had gone. Travelled ok if a bit green at times and had to switch off the rail to get past the leading pair as they stalled and faded late on. A solid finish but in a slow time and what was it worth? Some of the trainer's early FTO winners used to be real high quality and this one can improve for being a bit less green. But, perhaps more an OR78+ nursery type than a high class one for the medium to longer term.

Given quoted after the race = "She's a level-headed filly and has taken everything well, We took her away to Southwell for a gallop once and she took that in her stride. Paul said she handled the ground but didn't necessarily like it. She's as green as grass still and Paul did well to get her across to the rail from stall nine. I think there's a lot more to come and we'll have to think about that Listed race for fillies at York in middle of May. Whether we find something else in between I don't know."

BITF a competent effort but had the advantage of running the rail and effectively struggled to see of PIE. Borderline Open Maiden and perhaps and eternal placer.

Princess In Exile a small, neat, ready little sprinter with no real scope. Ran competently and settled but OR60s and not Open Maiden level. Trainer has now run two smaller fillies this year for a low quality win and now this place so a solid effort.

New trainer James Tate has now run his first two 2yos and both have been fillies for the same owner that have finished 4th. Excel Yourself much greener than the previous one and Fallong having to drive her along for the whole race and a wholly active ride unlike his effort on the Baker filly at Bath. EY a mediumd sized one and unremarkable overall. Might well be OR70+s if not Open Maiden level and can certainly improve for being less green so long as some of the Fallon exertions were not because she was unwilling. Borderline type and check STO.

Probably a similar take on Lasilia although slight preference for EY's development prospects. Lasilia raced wide and unbalanced at times but given a very attacking, involving ride by Makin. Came up well short for that type of effort but with the obvious possibility of being better on better ground. More the below 50% view whereas EY just above 50%.

How close the small newcomer Mace The Ace got to being onto the back of the first five hime is either a real niggle over how good the form is or MTS showed a bit more than her size suggests. MTA adrift and 9L off the lead at halfway and scrubbed along running wide of the rail. Beaten just over 8L at the finish but made ground through the early faders a bit earlier than just beating up on dead horses. Another neatly made small one lacking scope and into the low OR60s at best.

Jamnean & Lady Raffa a pair of underpowered small ones and OR50s is competitive at all.

Which boils the race down to an ok winner and a question over how far she can go. Whether BITF can find a soft maiden to win. Did either of EY or Lasilia show enough given some excuses to think they can be a bit bette than BITF? The rest are smaller, below OR70 fillies of various sorts and lacking scope with one exception. Which is Modern Lady. Trainer Richard Guest has a moderate record with 2ys overall but does get a few winners. Until a downturn in his overall record in 2010-11 (just a single winner from 18 individual horses) the first 2yo he ran each year would be usable and one of his winners. Which is one positive for Modern Lady. The only FTO juvenile winner the trainer has ever had was in this race in 2008 with Clumber Place (who led throughout and got a soft lead). Modern Lady was at the short end of debut SPs for the trainer with hints of 'support' although because he is seen as a 'shrewd' trainer these hints can be meaningless. But, another positive is that Modern Lady is a sibling to 3 x cheaply bought 5f winners at 2yo and by an ok sire. Since she finished last is she actaully a useless rabbit and all the positives just smoke? On the evidence of how ML went in the race that definitely isn't the case. On the small side but strong and bulky and a smooth, low slung mover. Ought to be ok to follow since the trainer usually gets uncompetitive debuts that the 2yos develop from. MK had a blanket for stalls entry and then got a little unsettled in the short time she was in. On the plus side she pinged out of the stalls but unlike Cllumber Place she found herself racing 2 wide in a line-of-three and she refused to settle and raced much too freely. Presumably she was a little underdone fitness-wise as well and therefore the bad fade. But, one to track carefully for being competitive in future because she is certainly a better than the 'little' fillies in the race and a real sprinter. Perhaps the sort who gets loose on the lead downhill at Catterick at a long SP.
