SUMMARY
S from GSS two days prior. 9mm of rain overnight and no rain forecast on the day until late afternoon. Going Stick Reading from 08:00am.

Medium SW Wind = Crosswind from the Right.

Stalls Spread most of width of track. Field raced in 3 Groups to around halfway with 3 fillies on the Far Side for 2.5F+ then merging into the outside of the Large Centre Group around Halfway including Hasanan who had led overall ont he Far Side. 4 Fillies racing dwon the Stands' Dise with Supernova Heights & Ziggy's Secret staying mostly to the rail throughout having broken from the two stalls next to the Stands' Rail.

First 'Second String' win for Godolphin this season with Bazalona on the winner and Dettori on Shuruq.

Despite the 'Major Meeting' billing and bigger fields the Maiden has a below average record overall for producing later winners. In the 209-11 period 38 fillies have run in the Maiden with 8 of the 35 who did not win on the day going on to win as 2yos (27 did not). None of the three winners were successful later and only odd hints of Group quality form from prominent finishers later. One filly has gone onto to a Group 3 win (Theysken's Threory for the connections who had Flywheel an NR here). Several others have tried Group races with the odd place. The 8 fillies who had won Maidens after running in this in the 2009-11 were split as 2 x Hannon, 2 x Meehan, 1 x Channon, 1 x Suroor, 1 x Simcock & 1 x Botti.

Interesting to compare the Sectional times for the whole field in this maiden with the earlier July Stakes = Times are for each 1F and the figure in brackets how much different the July Stakes was for that furlong and not cumulatively.

1st 1f = 15.59s (-0.27s),
2nd 1f = 11.78s (+0.16s),
3rd 1f = 11.56s (+0.07s),
4th 1f = 11.36s (-0.08s),
5th 1f = 11.23s (-0.09s),
6th 1F = 12.5s (+0.16s).

Note that these are Sectional times for the Whole Field and not for an individual horse. Each 1F could be run by a relay of horses for example or just by one pacemaker. Which means the total time for this maiden on Furlong sectionals is 74.02s and 0.32s than the actual overall time (does that work out?). With Certify coming from off the pace to win going away. But, an unusual race shape with the field racing wide spread in 3 groups early then grouping centre track and then spreading out to Stands' Side later on as the July Stakes did. Except for the winner who went from being in the group in centre track at halfway with horses either side of her to race the last 2F+ alone on the Centre to Far Side. Finishing best and winning comfortably. Any track bias in that? Those racing nearer the Stands' Side appeared to be kicking up bigger divots for much of the race but in this race the Stands' Side runners probably ran a more even pace and had some Pace bias assistance.

A quicker Start in the July Stakes with Heavy Metal getting on with it but then settling the pace and not more than 0.16s difference between the two races in any 1F slot afterwards. July Stakes slightly faster in the 4-5th furlong wind pace and 2F out effort section but a slower finishing furlong. Interesting to think about what Lewisham was doing with his strong finish in the slowest 1F at the end. Perhaps we could finally get rid of all that 'failed to quicken late on' nonsense in the form books in the sectional times ever catch on. 'Failed to maintain the existing pace as well as the winner did' or 'faded more than the winner' would usually be correct replacements.
