SHV as it had been two days prior. 8mm of rain in previous 24hrs to early morning. Heavy showers forecast for the day. Going Stick = 11:45am. Medium to Stiff WSW Wind = Three-quarter Headwind from the Left. Stalls Centre Hannon website = "Richard Hughes has opted to go [to NWBY] rather than Newmarket, and the fact that there are three two-year-old races on the Berkshire track probably influenced his decision...... We have a couple in the Rose Bowl, Rhamnus, who won really well at Sandown over five but will appreciate stepping back up to six furlongs here, and Master of War, who looked a decent horse when winning his maiden at Haydock and was certainly not discredited when finishing in mid-division in the Coventry at Royal Ascot. He now drops two grades, and, like Rhamnus, has solid claims. " Very Slow Time and 0.79s quicker than the earlier Fillies' Maiden run which was run at a slow pace. That maident he slowest 6f race at the course since start 2004 season and only other slower than this one by an OR65 nursery winner in 2004 on Heavy going. Slow pace to this race and barely a 2F 'sprint' and 10 seconds slower than a fast 6f race here. Handling the going important. Odd run by Euxton Hall who looked smaller medium in Context of field. Got a soft lead but headed by others going better at 2F out and then started hanging left and losing ground. Normally that sort of horse would not come back and rather fade at some point. Instead he plugged on again in the last 1F to be challenging for 3rd. Probably just take that as evidence for difficult going to 'pick up' on and make an effort off the earlier jog and a slower pace. Rhamnus a taller & rangy one and ought to be better on less testing going. Ridden by Hughes with Dobbs on Master Of War who had a better rating pre-race. Rhamnus had his own handler AP but still got unsettled inthe stalls with Hughes half standing on the side rail before getting back on just before the stalls opened. Hughes in teach-to-settle mode anyway so hauled the horse to the back and no forward effort in the last 2F as if Rhamnus not handling the going. |
