SUMMARY
£10k Bonus Race.

Soft with Going Stick reading from 09:45am. Straight Course at maximum width. 28mm of rain since previous Monday and showers expected on the day. [Check]. Stiff NW Wind = Half Headwind from the Left.

John Best on his w/c 23rd Video Blog about Birdie Queen = [Summary] "Quite sharp....not very big...lacks scope. No idea if she handles soft .... might be well drawn if they go far side..... hope for more rain to loosen the ground up so not too holding."

Notably slow time and the Maiden field 7 days ago, which Vestibule ran in, did 61.05s on GGF going. This race 5.78s slower although they did go to the far side in the last 2F. But how comparable are that earlier maiden and this race as Power Output tests? Further, this race 1.05s slower than any 5f 2yo event here at least back to the start of 2004. The slowest previous times were two in early 2004 when good horses like Beaver Patrol (65.77s) & Blue Dakota (65.12s) ran in very slow ground. Other than that times much above 63s are rare.

Unusual edition of the race and a lesser quality one on profile. The going presumably having some impact on trainer's decided whether to run or not. The last 3 editions of this race have had the maximum field size of 16 declared although odd NRs mean 14 & 15 have run in the last two years. Look back at those three races and all three have produced 9 subsequent winners. The majority of those have been at Auction Race level or below but still indicating that the race usually draws together a set of precocious, usable fillies at their level. The Hannon debut winner has been the best type in each of 2010-11 with he standout highlight of the cheaply retained Best Terms going on to Group 1 success in 2011.

Which meant this race was short of the usual promise just on numbers. Take away the Hannon rep and the other 8 trainers would top out as approaching average records with 2yos and the majority lesser stables. The pace of the race was not that strong and even so only the first two finished the race off to any worthwhile standard. All of which leaves a feeling that this is low level form to treat as suspect and see how the field develop.

Threes Grand the first 2yo runner for new trainer Scott Dixon and you would expect him to want to make a mark early seeming a quite determined and driven individual in his presentation on the racecourse and in interview. Not just training for 'Daddy' to avoid having to work for a living. The inducements to perform well piled on with TG bred by his mother and owned by his father having been retained cheaply at the sales. TG also by the sire Milk It Mick who needs some help and the best horse the Dixon's ever bred and owned. TG a half sister to a small filly that managed an AW 5f win but a bigger and more solid model than that one and one of the bigger two in this field along with the runner-up. Obviously suspect form and probably unlikely the trainer is going to produce a string of FTO wins. But, this one was competent throughout the race so perhaps Dixon junior is going to have his 2yos readier than some of the trainer's his father has employed before.

Trainer Boyle used to try to make a bit of an impact with 2yos when he was getting going and got the odd competitive debut with good ones. As his career has developed he has not seemed that interested in 2yo racing and wins before August rare. The debuts are now almost all uncompetitive and the early season one laughably inept and underprepared (as his first two at this course in 2011 were). Uncomplicated the most expensive and topweight in this field and you hope she got that name because of being a natural racehorse that Boyle wouldn't have to have added much nous & craft to (because he doesn't for debut). She is one of the biggest pair in the field and a little green at various points through the race but able to stay well in touch helped by the slower pace. You wonder what would have happened if this had been on GF going with a big field and run in around 61s. Uncomplicated was entered for the Goffs 2yo Breeze-up sale in early April but then withdrawn. Given that you wonder whether someone other than Boyle had been training and preparing her for that breeze and therefore she knew a bit more than the trainer average FTO. A solid effort but in a suspect race. Watch STO and for more info on the race quality. Note that the winner slightly carried her LH in the last 0.5f towards the far frail and there was a Stewards' Enquiry but no change. She was perhaps a little intimidated and never stopped responding and going forward with the winner.

Vestibule had looked promising 7 days ago when never really put in the race by jockey Gannon (who was injured riding a 2yo filly - probably not this one - at an owner's stable Open Day over the previous weekend so JP Fahy rode here). But, you would characterise her as a smaller but balanced one that seems to make the post of herself through fluid movement rather than raw power. A type which can often show a good cruising speed but nothing happens when asked to make a kick in later race. Which means a slower slog on soft going probably not ideal for her. Seemed to run like that and a bit of free running in 2R at times to halfway. Didn't pick up as well at 2F out as the way she travelled suggested and TG/Unc making similar or better efforts out wide and bigger fillies able to grind it out for longer on soft in the last 1F. Another circumstantial to ponder is that the trainer has not had a STO win in 2010-11 and the majority of STOs have recorded lower ratings than the debut. The ok ones do then come back and win 3TO+. So, Vestibule not one to give up on 3TO and hope she is in a faster race on firmer going.

Ishi Honest the first runner for trainer Usher and he does front-load competitive ones. Debuts are usually moderate and he gets development wins after 3TO if at all. IH green here and plugging on late into the gap between the front 3 and the faders. Low quality type and see if STO shows any promise for low level nursery or seller development.

Bheleyf has some pace but looks a short-runner and her lack of scope to develop means she needs to win soon or it will be sellers. Raced too freely here which did not help but then went from leading and travelling ok at 2F out to fading badly by around 0.5F later.

Hannon had won the race with a newcomer in each of the last two years and usually runs at least one solid filly in the bigger fields. Lucky Suit vaguely talked up on his website in an aside about her "going well" and being very hopeful of a good run. Didn't stand out on looks and jockey Moore putting up 2lbs overweight at 8-8 (perhaps not best to suggest he eats less pies). Given an unusually attacking, persistent and sustained ride by Moore and hustled along in the front line. Seemed to put her head in the air and not a lot happened 2F when asked for an effort. Surprisingly, rather than just letting her drift back and let her show STO on better ground what she is Moore kept at her to the line including using the Whip when she was in 7th late on. Which seemed a bit like a 'Bad Horse' ride for an unwilling one they didn't want to let get away with anything. Somewhat reminiscent of the ride on Relay (for the same owner) at KTNA on the first day of the season. Is LS an ok one with at attitude issue? Perhaps watch for a seller entry just in case.

Myzamour a non-5f pedigree and able to go with this slower pace and make a brief effort but an early fade. Low quality and need further.

Close Together presumably bought by the Mills family as a sibling of a Group 2 winner they trained. Cheap given that and a smaller one even in this field. First runner for new sire Dylan Thomas so perhaps need further. Presumably running now on lack of size and scope grounds. A slow start here and too green to mount any response after that.
