SUMMARY
£10k Yearling bonus Race.

Abrupt change in weather on day of race with temperatures into the mid-20s Celcius in the previous week. Down to around 11 degrees with a medium NE wind on the day of the race = 3/4 Tailwind from left in back straight and change to a 3/4 Headwind from the right in the home straight.

Solid pace and 1+ in effect and stiff enough to break up the leading 3 which allowed Woodland Mill to be in the right position to Stalk&Pounce by being 4th through halfway 2L off the lead. Relay given a 'Bad Horse' ride as if she is a problem and unwilling. Hustled along to contest the lead on the rail and having to be encouraged along at various points and a few bits of tail flashing. Reminiscent of the debut by Black Daddy for Hannon & the same owner, as intended stable second string in a similar early race here. Hannon used to start real good ones early here but not so obvious since Fat Boy in 2007. Recent early debuts at the course have been a mix of solid OR80 winners and some lesser types. Relay looks a bit suspect in attitude and probably the OR60s end if they can get it out of her. Reinvigorate would have been the first string and has solid credentials to be OR80+ type.

Hannon on his website on 30th = "The more precocious bunch of two-year-olds in Richard Hannon's empire and primed and ready to roll, and, while the boss has decided against sending Dust Whirl up to Doncaster for the Brocklesby Stakes, we are doubly represented in the juvenile fillies race at Kempton which carries a ten grand bonus. Richard Hannon jnr said:'Reinvigorate and Relay are two nice two-year-olds. Both have been working well and both are well drawn, so, while you never know what you are going to come up against, we hope that they will be involved in the finish and give us an early guide to the strength of our youngsters. We never rev them up at home, but they have done everything we have asked,'"

Mostly Content Free quote from Hannon = nice, working well, hope will be involved, never know what you come up against = broad empty phrases woven into the normal pattern without a single worthwhile novel fact included. What do they do in-between this quote and port-race to be able to get a guide to the quality of their early runners? If you do not what you are running against how do you judge you horses against an 'unknown'.

KT O'Neill as 2011 apprentice with yard who rode his claim out over-winter rides Reinvigorate with M. Dwyer on Relay [NOTE = When Reinvigorate became an NR then KT O'Neill switched to Relay]. Richard Hughes out until May having picked up a 50 day ban in India over the winter for Not Riding to Instructions. Imagine that.

Fahey on SLife website on 30th = "I run three at Kempton on Saturday too with Woodland Mill up first in the williamhill.com Maiden Fillies' Stakes. She's quite sharp. We just haven't been able to get stuck into them on the grass this year as we'd like as it's been so dry but she's had a couple of spins on turf and she's speedy. She's the first two-year-old runner we've got and we're just hoping she runs well. It's very difficult to judge the opposition but we know she's not a black type filly - I won the first two-year-old race with Miss Work Of Art last year and if there's something like that in the race she won't be winning. But, she's grand, she knows her job and we're hoping she runs well."

Note point about dry and warm weather holding him up to some extent because of firm turf gallops. Does 'Sharp' mean small? At least he almost puts-a-number-on-it but not beyond saying she is not a Listed level type.

Olivia Maylam on her website re Sally Bruce = "tough little filly will be running at Kempton on the first day of the turf season in a maiden fillys, she is an earlie type with a tough attitude, she has had a race course gallop and flew through her stalls test."

Note from Stan Moore on his website about his first 2yo runner of the year - Tiger Sunset who was Brocklesby entered but ran at Dundalk on Fri 30th - "How exciting it is to be at the start of the flat again. We are starting a day early with our first 2 year old runner at Dundalk this evening with Tiger Sunset. A colt, by Belmont [sic], not the most fashionable of sires, but all the same a well put together horse who has been doing everything nicely at home and away when he went to Kempton to work. Hopefully he will put up a good performance for us tonight and give us a marker for our other 2 year olds. This week has been made easier by the lovely weather we have had, both horses and jockeys have enjoyed it." - TSunset led on rail around the sharp bend and ran a bit freely attended by two horses. Paces was presumably a bit too strong and front 3 at halfway saw TSunset fade tamely by 1f out, the favourite (1 off rail) fold late and finish unplaced of 6 & Bolger horse who ran 2 off the rail in the front line and managed to hang on to win as the three who got behind and flopping around were able to close up late as the pace three collapsed. Bolger has won first 2 juvenile races in Ireland and presume his winner of the DUND race did well to run wide, survive the 3-way pace and hang on to win (perhaps settled best).
