G from GSS two days prior. Going Stick reading from 06:15am. Rain forecast for the morning. Light to Medium WSW Wind = Three-Quarter Headwind from the Left. Stalls Centre. Field raced Centre with a Stiff to Strong Pace and a proper test of abilities with the leaders going hard enough to fade into the last 1f. First two home the higher Profile newcomers from reliable FTO stables who were able to race 'Midfield' at 2.5-3.5L off the pressing leaders to inherit the lead as they faded. Trainer Barron had bouts of FTO wins during his career. Seemed to have drifted away from that as his overall returns declined from 2004-8 as the number of 2yos he had increased. Better returns overall 2009-11 and the big change was in 2011 with 33% FTO wins and a profit to follow that in 2009 off just 2 x FTO wins. Parisian Prince's win took his 2012 record to 4 x Debut wins from 11 goes plus a strong 2nd as favourite and a solid 3rd who runs STO the day after this race. A profit so far on that record? What has changed? Better buying, more ready on debut? PP sold for just £20k at the Doncaster Breeze-up sale in late April and look through the prices paid there and you wonder how much the breeze actually affects how people bid. You suspect that other than at the extremes, i.e. obviously very poor breezes or lightning organised ones, the structure just is not there to separate out quality in the bulk of the runners. Running on loose easy turf going also unhelpful to that proces. Look at PP's breeze and it is fine other than he offers to hang left a bit at times. Taller and rangy and moves well and finishes the breeze off strongly. £20k set against all the keep and training costs incurred if PP had been bought as a 1yo seems a pretty good deal. Trainer clearly has them ready FTO these days and support to a level which showed profitable returns for his runners in 2010-11. Finihsed race off well again after taking time to find a gap through the fading leaders to make his effort and that probably an advantage. OR80+ but you would wonder about the development potential. None of Barron's FTO winners in 2011 won again and were either tried in to high class races STO or did not appear again. The two FTO winners to have run again this season have both been beaten in Listed or Group races afterwards. PP should perhaps stay 7F and have some prospects to improve and win on that. How highly tried will he be? Majestic Moon a full brother to Majestic Myles who was a OR90+ juvenile for Fahey and has proved OR100+ and a Listed winner over 7f at 3-4yo. Similar type in being length to PP but a better build. Different mover and more a lengthy galloper. More green than PP. Sat closer to the pace and made his effort early while the leaders were still going forward. Did not see out the 6f as well as the winner partly because of that. Appeals as a type to improve for 7f and perhaps get further and continue to develop through the season as his brother did. Red Style ok size but lacking build and not that neatly made. Has an OR70 which is a bit high for an average Nursery but might find a Northern one to win given he seems a reliable trier. Did best of the pacemakers and saw out 5.5F. Teetotal finally put into a race and found a bit more zip than the size suggests but barely stayed 5F being put under pressure by the pace. OR60s Red Paladin fretful in the prelims and always looking likely to hang left in the race and never really balanced. Early fade and looking pained towards the last 1F. Has the size & build to be better than Red Style (by the same sire) but has not put a race together yet and not mentally mature enough to go with whatever the physical issues might be. See what OR he gets. Other three made up of two small fillies of no interest and Foolbythepool of vague development interest given his two sibling both won at 2yo after development runs. More the 'Sonsie Lass' class end probably. |
