HV from S two days prior. 10mm of rain in previous 24hrs to early morning. Going Stick = from 10:00am. Stiff to Strong SW Wind = ?? Blackdown Spirit another STO improver win for trainer Millman. By the standards of his green debuts these days BS's prominent run in the lead in a field of 14 at WDSR much more knowing and competitive than usual (aided by a rail draw & only having to go with Wordsaplenty - thrashed in a Nursery off OR61 earlier in the week). Which meant 'normal' improvement for the trainer would make 4/1 too long an SP. Cruised comfortably with CGirl and took up the lead just by his own cruising pace and a comfortable win. Trainer Millman interviewed after the race said BS had always shown promise at home and they went to WDSR expecting to compete to win. Trainer said in retrospect the horse had done his work at home to that point comfortably so had got tired late on at WDSR and run below their expectations. Lacking the hard fitness of stressed training work. Jockey Millman junior asked what quality he thought BS might be gave a refreshingly clear answer and containing numbers. He said the two winning siblings had proved OR75-80 types and thought BS should be similar. You could argue over whether either of the siblings ever actually ran to OR75 but hey-ho. It is interesting to note that both siblings have only run once since their juvenile win although Blackdown Fair is still only 3yo although has been missing for a year. Added to that the dam won on her June 23rd debut as a 2yo at WDSR (very similar date to BS's debut at the same course). She ran another 34 times through to 5yo and never won again with her OR declining from a peak of OR86 3TO after a 2nd in a SALS Novice STO, to be OR60 by end of her 3yo season and OR45 in December of her 5yo season when they eventually packed it in after 8 x unplaced runs. Is the clock ticking for BS or does he have a bit more development scope? City Girl ran too freely and sweaty and XNB. Needs to settle down to fulfil her potential although seemed to handle the ground ok. Interesting Pundit point on ATR where Cooperman at the track said in the paddock he thought CGirl was 'head & shoulders' above the others both literally (taller) and in quality. When reviewing the race video head-on the two studio based pundits included Chapman who said that BS looked the much chunkier as he cruised along next to the over-racing CG. Plus point for Cooper who picked this point up when they went back to him and said he still thought CG was 'bigger'. In the interview trainer Millman had said he thought BS was 'big'. Unpicking this you would say the crux of the problem is people using 'big' in different ways. Cooper was using 'Big' to mean TALL. CG is taller but a lighter frame than BS and a filly. She also seemed to have gone a bit light and perhaps not 'holding condition', i.e. bulk, with work. Nearly all trainers use 'Big' to refer to BUILD only and Height, Tallness, does not come into that. So, everyone was right but fixing the problem by identifying the mismatch and being more exact in use of terminology of course never happened. So we can look forward to the same discussion on a regular basis. Not helped by Chapman seeming to think that a good way to fill time is to back his 'Guest Pundit' into a corner where they HAVE to make definitive statements which he will hold up to ridicule/applause afterwards. Rather than letting them ponder over the possibilities and assess what might be learnt generally about about what is taking place. |
